The past three decades have borne witness to many advances in the understanding of the molecular biology and treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), an Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated cancer endemic to southern China, southeast Asia and north Africa. In this Review, we provide a comprehensive, interdisciplinary overview of key research findings regarding NPC pathogenesis, treatment, screening and biomarker development. We describe how technological advances have led to the advent of proton therapy and other contemporary radiotherapy approaches, and emphasize the relentless efforts to

Amyloidosis is a heterogeneous group of diseases characterized by the extracellular deposition of insoluble proteins whose pathogenesis is not yet fully understood. The deposition of amyloid proteins can be systemic or localized, idiopathic or related to systemic diseases, mostly multiple myeloma or chronic inflammatory diseases. Localized head and neck amyloidosis is a rare entity, mainly involving the larynx. Given the rarity of the disease and the absence of a lasting follow-up protocol, there is no standard treatment defined for localized amyloidosis. We report a rare case of localized nas

An 8-year-old spayed female 32 kg Labrador retriever was presented for further investigation into the underlying cause of dyspnea, stertor, and sleep apnea present for three months and worsening over 30 days. There were significant reduction in airflow through the nares and loud inspiratory stridor. Thoracic and cervical radiographs made were normal. A skull CT and retrograde rhinoscopy showed a mass occluding the majority of the nasopharynx above the caudal third of the hard palate. The main differential diagnoses included a neoplastic mass vs. inflammatory mass vs. cyst vs. mucous obstructio

Of the ~129,079 new cases of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and 72,987 associated deaths estimated for 2018, the majority will be geographically localized to South East Asia, and likely to show an upward trend annually. It is thought that disparities in dietary habits, lifestyle, and exposures to harmful environmental factors are likely the root cause of NPC incidence rates to differ geographically. Genetic differences due to ethnicity and the Epstein Barr virus (EBV) are likely contributing factors. Pertinently, NPC is associated with poor prognosis which is largely attributed to lack of awar

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a malignancy with unique clinical biological profiles such as associated Epstein-Barr virus infection and high radiosensitivity. Radiotherapy has long been recognized as the mainstay for the treatment of NPC. However, the further efficacy brought by radical radiotherapy has reached the bottleneck in advanced patients, who are prone to develop recurrence and distant metastasis after treatment. The application of photon therapy makes it possible for radiation dose escalation in refractory cases and may provide second chance for recurrent patients with less unrec

INTRODUCTION: Cutaneous metastases from nasopharyngeal carcinoma are extremely rare and associated with a poor prognosis.
CASE REPORTS: We retrospectively reviewed 820 patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma treated over a 20-year period in the radiotherapy department of Farhat Hached hospital in Sousse and Ibn Khaldoun Medical centre, Hammam Sousse. Two of these patients presented cutaneous metastases. The skin lesions appeared during radiotherapy and 3 months after treatment of the primary tumour. Cutaneous metastases present as multiple painless nodules and erythematous plaques. Cutaneous m

Nasopharyngeal dermoids associated with cleft palate present as intraoral protruding masses. Only 5 cases of nasopharyngeal dermoids associated with cleft palate have been reported in the literature. We are reporting 4 such cases encountered by us in the last 10 years in our series of 900 cleft palate surgeries. Imaging studies were done to know the extension of dermoid and to look for any associated congenital intracranial anomalies. We observed that nasopharyngeal dermoids are usually nonmalignant and can be easily managed by complete local excision followed by palatal closure after 6 months

This article desribes the ophthalmic involvement in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) pre- and post-treatment. We retrospectively reviewed data for 354 consecutive patients diagnosed with or treated for NPC at a single tertiary centre between April 2007 and July 2015. We identified 27 (7.6%) patients with ophthalmic involvement due to NPC or its treatment. Symptomatic orbital invasion by tumor occurred in 13 of 27 patients (48.1%). The mean age of diagnosis in these patients was 54 years, and 8 (61.5%) had no prior diagnosis of NPC. Ocular signs, but no orbital invasion, was present

The auditory tube plays a fundamental role in regulating middle ear pressure. A "system" sensitive to a pressure gradient between the middle ear and the ambient environment is necessary. The presence of mechanoreceptors in the middle ear and the tympanic membrane has been studied, but the presence of these receptors in the nasopharyngeal region remains unclear. The aim of this study is to confirm the presence of pressure sensitive corpuscles in the nasopharynx. An experimental study was conducted on five fresh and unembalded human cadavers. The pharyngeal ostium of the auditory tube and its pe

Teratomas are neoplasms derived from the germ cell with components of all the three embryonic layers. These are rare neoplasms in head and neck region which can occur in any age group but are more prevalent in children. The present case is an 11-year-old girl who was brought with history of painless and progressive swelling in the oropharynx for 3 years with the associated left sided nasal blockage and nasal discharge. CT scan was suggestive of benign nasopharyngeal mass highly suspicious for lipoma. Excision of the mass was done under general anaesthesia. Peroperatively, it was a smooth, pedu

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a special type of head and neck cancer with a widely variable geographical variation in incidence. The central location of the tumor inside the head coupled with the radiosensitivity of the tumor to radiation made radiation therapy the first choice in primary treatment of NPC. Advances in radiotherapy and chemotherapy have markedly improved the local control of NPC. Unfortunately, a small but significant number of patients still suffered from loco-regional failures that would be amenable to re-treatment. Traditional form of retreatment was to employ a second c

The bovine nasopharyngeal tract plays an important role in animal health and welfare by acting as a site for the carriage of pathogens causing bovine respiratory disease, a condition which results in significant morbidity and mortality in feedlot cattle. We characterized the bacterial nasopharyngeal microbiota in cattle at feedlot entry (day 0) and day 60 using 454 pyrosequencing. We also identified the most frequently isolated aerobic bacteria from nasopharyngeal swabs after plating onto three types of media. The cattle nasopharyngeal microbiota was composed primarily of Proteobacteria (68.9%

Teratomas which originate from two or three germ layers are the most common congenital tumors of the childhood and are usually observed in the sacrococcygeal region. The nasopharynx is a considerably rare localization. Nazopharyngeal tumors may lead to significant findings including apnea, respiratory distress and stridor in newborns. In this study, a female newborn who developed respiratory distress minutes after cesarean delivery was presented. Examination following a difficult intubation and radiological examination revealed presence of a nasopharyngeal mass in the baby who was born at the

Lymphangiomas are rare congenital tumors of the lymphatic system, most often encountered during childhood. Although the most frequent locations for lymphangioma are the head and neck region, isolated involvement of the nasopharynx is very rare and only two cases have been reported since 1969. We report a case of a 60-year-old male with a nasopharyngeal mass that presented with nasal obstruction. The surgical excision of mass was performed by a combined transoral and transnasal endoscopic approach. Histopathological evaluation revealed the diagnosis as lymphangioma. After a follow-up of 18 mont

OBJECTIVES: To describe three rare cases of nasolacrimal relapse of nasopharyngeal carcinoma, and to discuss the route of tumour spread from nasopharynx to lacrimal system as well as the relevant computed tomography findings.
CASE REPORT: We report three cases of nasolacrimal relapse in patients with previously treated nasopharyngeal carcinoma. The common initial presentations in these cases were epiphora and medial canthal swelling. The tumour spread from the nasopharynx to the lacrimal sac along the lateral nasal wall and nasolacrimal canal. Computed tomography demonstrated nasolacrimal can
