Understanding Natural Disaster or Weather-Related Drowning Deaths Among Children.

OBJECTIVES: Drowning is the leading cause of death during flood disasters. Little is known about these deaths. Child death review teams review details of child deaths to understand circumstances and risk factors to inform prevention. METHODS: Using data entered in 2005 to 2021 for children ages 0 to 17 years from the National Fatality Review-Case Reporting System, we identified 130 drowning deaths directly attributed to natural disaster or weather incidents, and 14 deaths indirectly attributed to these incidents. Frequencies, proportions, and χ2 statistics were used to describe selected measu

Trauma or growth after a natural disaster? The mediating role of rumination processes.

The aim of this study was to test a cognitive model of posttraumatic symptoms (PTS) and posttraumatic growth (PTG) after exposure to a natural disaster. It was hypothesized that although subjective severity of trauma would be related to the severity of PTS, this relation would be mediated by brooding and cognitive strategies related to the presence of repetitive negative content in thoughts. Furthermore, the relation between severity and PTG would be fully mediated by deliberate rumination (DR), cognitive strategies related to conscious efforts focused on handling the event. To evaluate the co

The role of anger and ongoing stressors in mental health following a natural disaster.

OBJECTIVE: Research has established the mental health sequelae following disaster, with studies now focused on understanding factors that mediate these outcomes. This study focused on anger, alcohol, subsequent life stressors and traumatic events as mediators in the development of mental health disorders following the 2009 Black Saturday Bushfires, Australia's worst natural disaster in over 100 years. METHOD: This study examined data from 1017 (M = 404, F = 613) adult residents across 25 communities differentially affected by the fires and participating in the Beyond Bushfires research study.

Natural disasters and SARS-CoV-2: potential risk factors for exacerbating mental health conditions among veterans.

BACKGROUND: Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands Veterans (PRVs) have faced recurring challenges from hurricanes, earthquakes, and the COVID-19 pandemic. These events combined with prior traumas and social determinants of health (SDoH), may contribute to neuropsychiatric mental health conditions (MHCs) like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance use disorder (SUD) in PRVs affected by SARS-CoV-2. METHODS: To clinically characterize the risk factors for MHCs among SARS-CoV-2 infected PRVs, we examined 839 records (2016-2020) to study SARS-CoV-2 infections and MHCs. Records were asse

Human Trafficking in the Wake of Natural Disasters: A Case Study of Preparedness and Response in Louisiana.

There is a growing understanding of the intersection of natural disasters and human trafficking, but there are few empirical research studies on this phenomenon. This exploratory study seeks to advance knowledge on the nexus of human trafficking after natural disasters in the Gulf South region of the United States. We conducted semistructured interviews with 46 disaster responders and human trafficking responders working in Louisiana during a major hurricane between 2017 and 2022. These interviews explored the landscape of human trafficking in the wake of disasters, the impact of natural disas

How natural disasters affect the distribution of marine litter in protected island ecosystems (Seaflower Biosphere Reserve - Colombia).

Islands are particularly vulnerable to storms and hurricanes, which can cause severe environmental, economic, and social impacts, including the accumulation of waste in marine ecosystems. In November 2020, Hurricane Iota struck the islands of Providencia and Santa Catalina in the Seaflower Biosphere Reserve, Colombia. This study assesses the distribution, composition, and sources of marine litter after the hurricane, focusing on variations observed across coastal ecosystems such as beaches, mangroves, and coral reefs. A comparative analysis of data from 2019 and 2021 reveals significant differ

Two-Stage Stochastic Optimization for the Pre-Position and Reconfiguration of Microgrid Defense Resources against Natural Disasters.

With the aggravation and evolution of global warming, natural disasters such as hurricanes occur more frequently, posing a great challenge to large-scale power systems. Therefore, the pre-position and reconfiguration of the microgrid defense resources by means of Mobile Energy Storage Vehicles (MEVs) and tie lines in damaged scenarios have attracted more and more attention. This paper proposes a novel two-stage optimization model with the consideration of MEVs and tie lines to minimize the shed loads and the outage duration of loads according to their proportional priorities. In the first stag

Post-traumatic stress disorder associated with natural and human-made disasters in the World Mental Health Surveys.

BACKGROUND: Research on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following natural and human-made disasters has been undertaken for more than three decades. Although PTSD prevalence estimates vary widely, most are in the 20-40% range in disaster-focused studies but considerably lower (3-5%) in the few general population epidemiological surveys that evaluated disaster-related PTSD as part of a broader clinical assessment. The World Mental Health (WMH) Surveys provide an opportunity to examine disaster-related PTSD in representative general population surveys across a much wider range of sites than

Are natural disasters in early childhood associated with mental health and substance use disorders as an adult?

Understanding factors that influence risk for mental health and substance use disorders is critical to improve population health and reduce social costs imposed by these disorders. We examine the impact of experiencing a natural disaster-a serious fire, tornado, flood, earthquake, or hurricane-by age five on adult mental health and substance use disorders. The analysis uses data from the 2004 to 2005 National Epidemiologic Survey of Alcohol and Related Conditions. The analysis sample includes 27,129 individuals ages 21-64 years. We also exploit information on parenting strategies to study how

Sport-related activities as a psychosocial strategy for mental health recovery following natural disasters: a narrative review.

Natural disasters-earthquakes, floods, tsunamis, wildfires, and storms-inflict profound and often enduring psychological trauma on affected populations. Survivors exhibit elevated rates of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, peritraumatic dissociation, social dysfunction, and somatic complaints. Despite this burden, mental health services in disaster-affected regions remain under-resourced, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. This narrative review provides a conceptual synthesis of findings from 11 studies that examined the role of sport-related activities
