The Nebraska Biocontainment Unit through the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, recently received patients with confirmed Ebola virus from West Africa. The Nebraska Biocontainment Unit and Omaha Fire Department's emergency medical services (EMS) coordinated patient transportation from airport to the high-level isolation unit. Transportation of these highly infectious patients capitalized on over 8 years of meticulous planning and rigorous infection control training to ensure the safety of transport personnel as well as the community during transport. Although these transports occurred

Average stature is now a well-accepted measure of material and economic well-being in development studies when traditional measures are sparse or unreliable, but little work has been done on the biological conditions for individuals on the nineteenth-century U.S. Great Plains. Records of 14,427 inmates from the Nebraska state prison are used to examine the relationship between stature and economic conditions. Statures of both black and white prisoners in Nebraska increased through time, indicating that biological conditions improved as Nebraska's output market and agricultural sectors develope

We present the first detailed phylogenetic analysis of Buggy Creek virus (BCRV), a poorly known alphavirus with transmission cycles involving a cimicid swallow bug (Oeciacus vicarius) vector and cliff swallows (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota) and house sparrows (Passer domesticus) as the principal avian hosts. Nucleotide sequences of a 2,075-bp viral envelope glycoprotein-coding region, covering the entire PE2 gene, were determined for 33 BCRV isolates taken from swallow bugs at cliff swallow colonies in Nebraska and Colorado in the summer of 2001 and were compared with the corresponding region of B

BACKGROUND: According to the U.S. State Department's Refugee Processing Center and the U.S. Census Bureau, in the fiscal year 2016, among all states in the United States, Nebraska resettled the highest number of refugees per capita.
OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to determine the most common reasons for refugees utilizing hospital services in Nebraska between January 2011 and September 2015, and to examine whether refugee patients had increased risks for adverse health conditions compared to non-refugee patients.
METHODS: Statewide linkage was performed between Nebraska Medica

Immunization rates among health care personnel (HCP) have remained low despite advances in vaccine development with reported rates ranging from 27% to 72% for commonly recommended vaccines. Within the United States, HCP are placing patients, families, and themselves at considerable risk for vaccine-preventable diseases. A significant source of infection, HCP are carriers of infectious agents and often unknowingly transmit these contagious diseases while experiencing minimal or no symptoms. This study examined the current immunization rates of HCP for influenza, tetanus, diphtheria, and pertuss

CONTEXT: Policies requiring confidential reporting by name to state health departments of persons infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) have potential to cause some of them to avoid HIV testing.
OBJECTIVE: To describe trends in use of HIV testing services at publicly funded HIV counseling and testing sites before and after the implementation of HIV reporting policies.
DESIGN AND SETTING: Analysis of service provision data from 6 state health departments (Louisiana, Michigan, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, and Tennessee) 12 months before and 12 months after HIV reporting was int

Sera of 624 blood donors were evaluated to determine seroprevalence of West Nile virus (WNV) antibodies following the 2003 WNV epidemic in Nebraska. Geographic factors contributing to differences in WNV seropositivity were evaluated. The overall prevalence of WNV in Nebraska was higher than reported previously in other U.S. locations (9.5% WNV immunoglobulin G seroprevalence rate), with the highest prevalence identified in the western part of the state (19.7%), followed by the central (13.8%) and the eastern (4.2%) parts. Regions of the state with the highest WNV-positive mosquito rates correl

The Ebola outbreak of 2014-2016 highlighted the need for the development of a more robust healthcare infrastructure in the United States to provide isolation care for patients infected with a highly hazardous contagious disease. Routine exercises and skills practice are required to effectively and safely prepare care teams to confidently treat this special population of patients. The Nebraska Biocontainment Unit (NBU) at Nebraska Medicine in Omaha has been conducting exercises since 2005 when the unit was opened. Previous activities and exercises conducted by the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit h

Ixodes scapularis ticks transmit a number of pathogens important to human health, including Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto, the causative agent of Lyme disease. While I. scapularis is found across the Eastern United States, Lyme disease transmission is largely limited to the Northeast and Upper Midwest and is nearly absent in the South. This indicates that differences in northern versus southern clades of I. scapularis are associated with differences in Lyme disease transmission risk. Ixodes scapularis is undergoing range expansion, including into the Great Plains region of the United Stat

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Although much is known about injury-related deaths from the use of external cause of injury codes (ecodes) on death certificates, the contribution of nonfatal injury is unknown, with most information based on estimates from national surveys. Some states mandate ecoding of charts for hospitalized patients, but few require ecode assignment for emergency department (ED) records. Missouri and Nebraska mandated ecoding of ED records in 1993 and 1994, respectively, allowing for a more complete description of injuries in those states. We describe fatal and nonfatal injury frequencies

Oscar Samuel Hoffman (1856-1926) was the first Jewish physician to settle in Omaha, Nebraska in 1883. He taught dermatology for 25 years at the Omaha Medical College and University of Nebraska, after completing postgraduate work in Vienna under the noted dermatologist Moritz Kaposi (1837-1902). His expertise also included obstetrics, and he became the Professor of Obstetrics and Dermatology at Omaha Medical College. On July 14, 1913, Hoffman delivered Leslie Lynch King, Jr, better known by his later name, Gerald R. Ford, Jr, who became the 38th President of the United States in 1974. This cont

The Ebola epidemic of 2014 demonstrated that outbreaks of high-consequence infectious diseases, even in remote parts of the world, can affect communities anywhere in the developed world and that every healthcare facility must be prepared to identify, isolate, and provide care for infected patients. The Nebraska Biocontainment Unit (NBU), located at Nebraska Medicine in Omaha, Nebraska, cared for 3 American citizens exposed in West Africa and confirmed with Ebola virus disease (EVD). Symptom monitoring of healthcare workers caring for these patients was implemented, which included twice daily c

Use of existing decision rules could improve management of streptococcal pharyngitis, but the validity of such rules outside their original patient population is not known. We applied a four-item decision rule derived at the Medical College of Virginia, Richmond, to 516 patients at the University of Nebraska, Omaha, to test how accurately it would predict outcome of throat culture. After correction for differences in the prevalence of a positive culture (17% in Virginia, 26% in Nebraska), the rule closely predicted the frequency of positive cultures in five subgroups based on the presence of c

A study at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in conjunction with the University of Nebraska Medical Center aimed to map the location of organs in an insufflated human abdominal cavity. The goal was to be able to give the location of organs and the abdominal wall in a coordinate system by specifying two angles and a depth. The surgeons assembled two sets of measurements from eight cadavers, four male and four female. One set of measurements mapped the insufflated abdominals walls, while the other set of measurements mapped important landmarks found within the abdominal cavity such as the pancr

BACKGROUND/AIMS: In 1996, Nebraska became the first state in the United States to establish a Parkinson's disease (PD) Registry. The objectives of this study were to determine the most common comorbid conditions among PD patients receiving inpatient and outpatient services in Nebraska between 2004 and 2012, and to examine whether PD patients had increased risks of these conditions.
METHODS: Statewide linkage was performed between Nebraska PD Registry data and hospital discharge database. The cohort comprised of 3,852 PD inpatients and 19,260 non-PD inpatients, and 5,217 PD outpatients and 26,

Over the course of this project, we utilized pharmacists at 159 community pharmacies in Nebraska and Iowa to administer vaccinations to adults 19 years of age or older with the objective of improving immunization rates in both states. We implemented a pharmacy-based technology platform and partnered with public health via the state immunization registries of both states to ensure that immunizations provided at the pharmacy were transmitted to the statewide registry, for which reporting is currently voluntary for health care providers. After using the technology platform for one year, an increa

In July 1995, an outbreak of acute febrile illness affected 11 (48%) of 23 family members from Nebraska and Kansas who had vacationed at a Colorado cabin in June. Similar symptoms were identified among five (17%) of 30 additional persons from Nebraska, Kansas, Florida, and Texas who had vacationed at the same cabin. Symptoms suggested tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF). Although no spirochetes were detected in available blood smears from five case-patients, Borrelia hermsii was cultured from the blood of one case-patient and two chipmunks trapped near the cabin. Case-patients were more likely t
