Characteristics of users of syringe vending machines in Berlin.

Vending machines providing sterile injection equipment are part of the AIDS prevention measures for injecting drug users (IDU) in Berlin. A study was carried out to assess characteristics (history of iv drug use, frequency of use of the machines, contact with counselling units for IDU, attitudes towards the machines, HIV serostatus) in users of syringe vending machines. Of the 313 individuals surveyed, 77% reported using the vending machines regularly (more than four times a week). Compared to other studies of IDU in Berlin (eg at syringe exchange programmes) the users of the vending machines

HIV and its associated factors among people who inject drugs in Mizoram, Northeast India.

AIM: To estimate the prevalence and associated factors with the human immune-deficiency virus (HIV) among people who inject drugs (PWID) in Mizoram, Northeast India. METHODS: The data source for the analysis was the 2019-2020 Mizoram State AIDS Control Society (MSACS) survey from 2695 PWID registered for the Targeted Intervention (TI) services. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to examine the factors associated with HIV among PWID after adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics, injection, and sexual behaviours. RESULTS: 21.19% of the participants tested positive for HIV and th

Practice of drug abuse among inmates of a drug rehabilitation centre in Hong Kong.

Sharing of contaminated injection equipment accounts for the rapid spread of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) among injecting drug users (IDUs). The profile of drug addiction practice among inmates of the Shek Kwu Chau Drug Rehabilitation Centre in Hong Kong was studied. Registers on all the new admissions to the Centre during a two-year period between 1990 and 1992 were reviewed. Of the 3129 drug users studied, 68.7% were aged between 21 and 40; 84.8% were IDUs and heroin was the commonest drug of addition. Nearly 70% of the IDUs had never shared injection equipment with others. There w

Risk Factors for Infective Endocarditis and Serious Injection Related Infections Among People Who Inject Drugs in Los Angeles, CA and Denver, CO.

BACKGROUND: Injection drug use-related infective endocarditis (IDU-IE) and bacterial infections have grown in the United States, but little is known about risk factors for these infections in community samples of people who inject drugs (PWID). METHODS: During 2021-22, PWID were recruited from community settings and surveyed for history of IDU-IE, serious injection related symptoms (SIRI) and untreated infection symptoms in the last 3 months. We used bivariate analysis and multiple logistic regression to examine factors associated with these outcomes. RESULTS: Among participants (n = 472), 7

"Caballo": risk environments, drug sharing and the emergence of a hepatitis C virus epidemic among people who inject drugs in Puerto Rico.

BACKGROUND: Sharing drug injection equipment has been associated with the transmission of HCV among PWID through blood contained in the cooker and cotton used to prepare and divide up the drug solution. While epidemiologists often subsume this practice under the sharing of "ancillary equipment," more attention should be paid to the fact that indirect sharing takes place within the process of joint drug acquisition and preparation. METHODS: We employed an ethnographic approach observing active PWID (N = 33) in four rural towns in Puerto Rico in order to document drug sharing arrangements invol

Current and recent drug use intensifies sexual and structural HIV risk outcomes among female sex workers in the Russian Federation.

BACKGROUND: Female sex workers (FSW) and people who inject drugs (PWID) are at high risk for HIV infection, with FSW-PWID at even greater risk. HIV-related research often focuses on the primary mode of transmission - sexual or parenteral transmission for FSW and PWID, respectively - with less known on how sex work and injection drug use (IDU) are collectively associated with the risk environment experienced by sex workers. We investigated this relationship among FSW in three Russian cities. METHODS: In 2011, FSWs (N=754) in Tomsk, Krasnoyarsk, and Kazan were recruited via respondent-driven sa

Correlates of Syringe Acquisition at Syringe Services Program and Pharmacies among Persons Who Inject Drugs: National HIV Behavioral Surveillance, United States, 2022.

We assessed correlates (sociodemographic, substance use, and injection-related factors) of obtaining syringes from syringe services programs (SSPs) and/or pharmacies among persons who inject drugs (PWID) in the United States (US) in 2022 to identify gaps in use among subpopulations of PWID. The 2022 National HIV Behavioral Surveillance conducted biobehavioral surveys among PWID using respondent-driven sampling. Using log-linked Poisson regression models, we examined past-year characteristics associated with obtaining syringes from (1) SSPs; (2) pharmacies; or (3) SSPs and pharmacies in the las

Harm reduction policy in Taiwan: toward a comprehensive understanding of its making and effects.

BACKGROUND: In response to the spread of HIV caused by needle sharing among injection drug users (IDUs), the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control implemented a pilot harm reduction program in 2005 that expanded nationwide in 2006. The policy led to a significant reduction in the number of HIV-positive cases among IDUs in 4 years. METHODS: This article aims to provide a critical evaluation of this harm reduction policy in Taiwan. The research leading to this article included a thorough literature review and in-depth interviews with 31 active policy participants, including people working in hospi

Continuing drug risk behaviour: shared use of injecting paraphernalia among London heroin injectors.

The study investigates donor sharing and recipient sharing of different types of injecting equipment and the frequency of sharing activities with sexual partners, close friends and casual acquaintances. Structured interviews were conducted with 303 injectors recruited as part of a study of early and episodic opiate use. Subjects were contacted in non-clinical, community settings by a peer recruitment method (Privileged Access Interviews). Spoons and water containers were more frequently shared than needles and syringes. Significant differences were obtained between the frequency of sharing dif

Analysis: the impact of needle, syringe, and lancet disposal on the community.

There are over 7.5 billion needles and syringes used outside of the health care system each year by individuals with diabetes, migraines, allergies, infertility, arthritis, HIV, hepatitis, multiple sclerosis, osteoporosis, psoriasis, or other conditions. Disposal of needles, syringes, lancets, and other medical products are not regulated in the home, while these same products used in health care facilities are strictly regulated. Home-generated medical waste is routinely placed into curbside trash, placing sanitation workers and custodial personnel at personal risk of a needle-stick injury. Th

Transmission of hepatitis C virus by needle-stick injury in community settings.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is predominantly transmitted by blood-to-blood contact, typically by sharing of needles by injecting drug users. Discarded needles could act as a vector for transmission of this infection. METHODS: Two cases of HCV seroconversion following a needle-stick injury in a community setting were identified. The effects of specimen processing and storage conditions on detection of HCV RNA were assessed to provide information about the likelihood of discarded needles containing infectious HCV. RESULTS: Consistent with a role for discarded needles in viral transmiss

Prevalence of sexually transmitted infections and associated risk factors among populations of drug abusers.

A cross-sectional survey was conducted of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and risky behaviors among 407 drug abusers in treatment facilities in 1998. Infections with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), and syphilis were detected by testing serum antibody levels; chlamydia and gonorrhea were detected by testing nucleic acid levels in urine. Logistic regression analysis was performed to measure associations. Prevalences of antibodies were as follows: to HSV-2, 44.4%; to HCV, 35.1%; to HBV, 29.5%; to HIV,

Survey of methadone patients in Canada.

We present the results of a survey outlining the frequency of certain activities associated with drug-seeking behaviour, e.g. needle sharing, illicit activity. The data presented are based upon information concerning 1,000 patients receiving long-term Methadone as a treatment for opioid dependence. These data are unique in that specific information of this nature has never before been made available in Canada, and are of interest in view of the AIDS epidemic.

Collaborative hand surgery clinical research without sharing individual patient data; proof of principle study.

High-quality research in hand surgery is increasingly important. A vital component is national and international multicenter collaborative research because of better generalizability and larger sample sizes. However, sharing patient data between centers can be hampered by regulations and privacy issues or reluctance to share patient data. Therefore, in this paper, we illustrate an approach for collaborative clinical research without sharing patient data while obtaining similar outcomes. To illustrate that this collaborative clinical research approach without sharing patient data leads to simil

Within-prison drug injection among HIV-infected Ukrainian prisoners: prevalence and correlates of an extremely high-risk behaviour.

BACKGROUND: In Ukraine, HIV-infection, injection drug use, and incarceration are syndemic; however, few services are available to incarcerated people who inject drugs (PWIDs). While data are limited internationally, within-prison drug injection (WP-DI) appears widespread and may pose significant challenges in countries like Ukraine, where PWIDs contribute heavily to HIV incidence. To date, WP-DI has not been specifically examined among HIV-infected prisoners, the only persons that can transmit HIV. METHODS: A convenience sample of 97 HIV-infected adults recently released from prison within 1-

The association of syringe type and syringe cleaning with HCV infection among IDUs in Budapest, Hungary.

We assessed whether syringe type, syringe cleaning and distributive syringe sharing were associated with self-reported and laboratory-confirmed HCV infection among Hungarian IDUs. Injecting drug users (N=215) were recruited from non-treatment settings in Budapest, Hungary between October 2005 and December 2006. Multivariate logistic regression models identified correlates of self-report of being HCV infected and testing positive for HCV. While 37% tested positive for HCV, 14% of the total (39% of those who tested positive) self-reported being HCV infected. Using any two-piece syringes was sign
