The phenomenon of needle spiking/pricking entails the non-consensual puncturing of a person with a sharp object, usually occurring in a festive setting. During their consultations, victims of this type of assault report concerns regarding the administration of substances which could lead to drug-facilitated submission, transmission of pathogens, namely HIV, hepatitis B and C, and violation of their corporeal integrity. The patient's unique perception, alongside the social representations of these risks, prompt the healthcare professional to adopt a stance of attentive listening, humaneness, an

The paper introduces the background and feasibility of transforming the international standard ISO 23908:2011 Sharps injury protection-Requirements and test methods-Sharps protection features for single-use hypodermic needles, introduces catheters and needles used for blood sampling and gives a rough interpretation of the main content. Based on these analyses, the paper provides some suggestions for this product on standardization.

Sharps disposal containers are specially designed containers into which used needles and other medical-waste sharps are discarded. They are intended to protect hospital employees--including sharps users and other workers downstream--from sharps injuries that result from contact with needles and other sharp devices. Since our last Evaluation of sharps containers in August-September 1993, manufacturers have introduced various new designs that may further reduce the risk of needlesticks and other sharp-object injuries (SOIs). These designs are intended to prevent users from overfilling the sharps

Needleless connectors (NCs) for vascular access have limited needlestick injuries, but complications including occlusion, thrombosis, and infections have increased despite reduced needlestick injuries. These complications relate to the ability of an NC design to limit volume fluctuations that can lead to fluid reflux with potential for microbial contamination. Different NC designs requiring specific usage protocols and training, a lack of clarity in NC function relative to manufacturer-designated categories, and confounding results from a limited number of studies comparing different NCs have

Despite the increase of mycobacterial infection, the incidence of tuberculous hand infection remains extremely low. We report a case of a 51-old pediatric nurse, who inadvertently inoculated her index finger via needlestick, while performing BCG immunization of the baby. Two days after the event, painful swelling and erythema of the distal interphalangeal joint region of the index finger appeared. Further diagnostic confirmed rare case of mycobacterial finger joint infection. It is important that hospital stuff should be informed about the possibility of BCG accident transmission to reduce the

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous exposure incidents (PEIs) and blood splashes on the skin of health care workers are a major concern, since they expose susceptible employees to the risk of infectious diseases. We undertook this study in order to estimate the overall incidence of such injuries in a newly founded tertiary hospital, and to evaluate possible changes in their incidence over time.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We prospectively studied the PEIs and blood splashes on the skin of employees in a newly founded (October 2000) tertiary hospital in Athens, Greece, while a vaccination program aga

Monkeypox, caused by an Orthopoxvirus, poses a significant occupational risk to healthcare workers due to their frequent contact with infected patients and contaminated materials. This risk is increased by potential lapses in infection control protocols in hospitals, such as a lack of personal protective equipment (PPE), improper hand hygiene, and other issues, making hospitals a key site for occupational transmission of monkeypox. The objective of the study was to evaluate monkeypox transmission among healthcare workers and identify critical preventive strategies. A comprehensive literature s

We report a case of occupational monkeypox virus infection from a needlestick injury in a healthcare worker in South Korea and review similar reports in the literature during 2022. Postexposure prophylactic treatment with a third-generation smallpox vaccine and antiviral agent tecovirimat inhibited local virus spread and alleviated lesion pain.

Zika virus diagnostic testing and laboratory research increased considerably when Zika virus began spreading through the Americas in 2015, increasing the risk for potential Zika virus exposure of laboratory workers and biomedical researchers. We report 4 cases of laboratory-associated Zika virus disease in the United States during 2016-2019. Of these, 2 were associated with needlestick injuries; for the other 2 cases, the route of transmission was undetermined. In laboratories in which work with Zika virus is performed, good laboratory biosafety practices must be implemented and practiced to r

An employee of a private disposal company suffered a finger needlestick injury while collecting waste at curbside from a building containing medical offices. Subsequent inspection of the contents of the garbage bags revealed the presence of used syringes and unsheathed needles. The Ministry of the Environment has developed a regulation and guidelines for the handling and disposal of biomedical waste including needles and other sharps. These specify that approved carriers and receivers are required for disposal; properly decontaminated waste is considered non-hazardous solid waste and can go to

We surveyed 940 Washington state waste industry workers to evaluate occupational exposure to potentially infectious materials (response rate 47 percent). Only 26 percent were trained specifically to deal with safety hazards associated with medical waste. For the year preceding the survey, 50 percent of respondents reported having received cuts and scratches on the job, 22 percent reported direct contact with waste blood on their clothing or shoes, 8 percent had blood exposure on their skin, 3 percent blood exposure on their face or eyes, and 6 percent occupational hypodermic needlestick injuri

Nurses face the risk of exposure to blood-borne infections if they suffer a needlestick or other injury from sharp devices such as lancets, scalpels and razors. In order to minimise their risk of contracting viruses such as HIV, hepatitis B and C, or other infections, risk assessment exercises must be undertaken so that safer systems of work can be implemented to protect nurses and other health care professionals.

The medical hazards of salmon farming can be grouped into those related to marine safety, fish husbandry, fish-farm diving and disease treatments. The hostile water environment requires thermal protection and personal buoyancy aids as workers frequently fall in the water from boats or cages. Feedstuffs may generate respirable dust and attract rats, creating a risk of leptospirosis. Musculo-skeletal injuries are common from lifting nets. Fish-farm diving has particular risks which can be minimized. Organophosphorous pesticides are used to treat sea lice and employees require health surveillance

BACKGROUND: Exposure to the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a matter of concern for healthcare workers. We conducted a survey to determine the level of awareness amongst operating room personnel regarding post-exposure prophylaxis in case of needlestick injuries from confirmed or suspected cases of HIV.
METHODS: A structured questionnaire was presented to 39 anaesthetists and 31 surgical residents. Questions were related to identification of high risk fluids, risk of transmission, drugs, costs and procedure to be adopted for post-exposure prophylaxis.
RESULTS: Fourteen respondents (20%

An initial survey of students approaching qualification and the preregistration house officer year revealed anxiety about competence in several important clinical skills. A questionnaire study was then undertaken to assess, first, the extent to which students had attained the skills required for the preregistration year and, second, the amount of training in these skills provided during the preregistration year. 122 medical students taking their final examinations were asked about training and practice in eight core clinical skills, and 84 graduates from the same school, approaching the end of

Firefighters often serve as emergency medical services providers and face repeated exposure to potentially traumatic events (PTEs) while participating in opioid overdose responses (OORs), which may impact their mental health. A survey of 173 firefighters who had participated in an OOR in the previous 6 months was used to assess exposure to PTEs during such events, job stress, mental health symptoms, and resources used to address mental health symptoms. Most firefighters (97%) reported experiencing one or more PTEs while responding to an opioid overdose in the past 6 months. Associations betwee

This report describes four skin-puncture accidents with needles that were heavily contaminated with Cryptococcus neoformans. In one accident, delayed administration of antifungal drugs resulted in a granuloma of the finger. In the other three accidents, no skin infection followed immediate prophylaxis with oral fluconazole. Our experience suggests that early therapy with fluconazole is a reasonable means of managing skin injuries caused by instruments contaminated with viable C. neoformans.
