Assessing and responding to infant mental health needs.

Early recognition of mental health problems in maltreated infants, coupled with tailored support to aid recovery, has the potential to offer significant benefits to a population whose needs have perhaps remained hidden in the past. All forms of maltreatment may adversely affect infant mental health, but perhaps none more so than emotional neglect. Universal contact with families with young children makes health visitors ideally placed to provide early support to this vulnerable group, but such practice requires considerable knowledge and understanding. This paper examines how emotional neglect

A Qualitative Needs Assessment for Pediatric Care Partnerships in Community Emergency Departments.

OBJECTIVES: Most pediatric emergency care in the United States occurs within community emergency departments (CEDs). CEDs often rely on pediatric academic medical centers (PAMCs) for specialty consultation and care continuation. These collaborations may be conduits for CEDs to enhance delivery of pediatric care. We sought to explore the experiences of CEDs with the provision of pediatric care and their perspectives on ways a PAMC can provide support. METHODS: We used phenomenological qualitative techniques to explore lived experiences of health care leaders of CEDs. We purposefully sampled nu

In Silico Approaches In Carcinogenicity Hazard Assessment: Current Status and Future Needs.

Historically, identifying carcinogens has relied primarily on tumor studies in rodents, which require enormous resources in both money and time. In silico models have been developed for predicting rodent carcinogens but have not yet found general regulatory acceptance, in part due to the lack of a generally accepted protocol for performing such an assessment as well as limitations in predictive performance and scope. There remains a need for additional, improved in silico carcinogenicity models, especially ones that are more human-relevant, for use in research and regulatory decision-making. A

The good side after stroke: ipsilateral sensory-motor function needs careful assessment.

Twenty subjects were examined 4-6 weeks after stroke to establish whether a sensory-motor ipsilateral deficit occurs early after stroke. Each underwent a timed test of repetitive side-to-side movement of both the upper and lower limbs ipsilateral to the cerebral infarct, and an assessment of motor disability using the Motor Assessment Scale. Results were compared with a group studied almost a year after their stroke, and with 41 age-matched healthy volunteers. There was a significantly worse performance (p < 0.005) on the right ipsilateral side, but not the left ipsilateral side, compared with

A needs assessment to determine the need for respiratory therapy in complex continuing care: A methods paper.

BACKGROUND: There is an emerging demand for complex continuing care for patients who are too ill to safely return home, but for whom hospitalization in an acute care environment is unnecessary or inappropriate. Despite the need and medical complexity of these patients, few respiratory therapists are practising in this environment, and little evidence exists to guide the implementation of respiratory therapy services in this setting. OBJECTIVE: In response to a perceived need for greater respiratory services at Saint Vincent Hospital (Ottawa, Ontario), a needs assessment was undertaken to asse

Dysarthria Assessment Across Spain: A Survey Study of Tools, Practices, and Needs.

INTRODUCTION: Dysarthria, a motor speech disorder that has a significant impact on communication, requires precise assessment for accurate diagnosis and intervention. Although internationally recognised assessment tools exist, many are not culturally or linguistically adapted for Spanish-speaking populations. The objective of this study was to investigate how speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in Spain navigate the lack of appropriate dysarthria assessment tools and identify the additional resources and tools required to enhance evaluation practices. METHOD: This cross-sectional study survey

Support Needs of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders: Implications for Their Assessment.

The construct of support needs has become a key aspect for the diagnostics, classification, and interventional management of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). However, instruments specifically designed to assess support needs in this population are not available. Currently, the Supports Intensity Scale for Children (SIS-C), which could be administered to assess students with any type of intellectual disability (ID), is the only valid tool able to assess support needs in Spain. Our aim was to verify whether the SIS-C is useful for assessing the support needs of students with ASD, regardless of
