Vascular lesions of the head and neck include vascular neoplasms, vascular malformations, and hypervascular lesions, derived from nonvascular soft-tissue elements. We retrospectively evaluated magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography images of vascular lesions located in the head and neck. Twelve patients (seven males, five females) aged 1-68 years (mean age, 35.25 years) were included in this study. Most of the vascular lesions in our study were histologically diagnosed. The lesions were as follows: a hemangioma located in the parotid space (n=1); a hemangioendothelioma located in t

Leishmaniasis comprises a group of diseases caused by a protozoan parasite belonging to the genus Leishmania and transmitted by the bite of infected female sand flies. Leishmaniasis is endemic in 88 countries and causes significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. Phenomena such as globalization and human migration, as well as the increased volume of international travel have extended its prevalence in developed countries. In addition, the incidence of leishmaniasis as an opportunistic disease has increased in recent years because of the growing number of patients with immune depression seco

Metastases are defined as the appearance of neoplasms in parts of the body remote from the site of the primary tumor. Metastasis can occur through one of three processes: direct seeding of body cavities or surfaces, lymphatic spread, and hematogenous spread. The importance of laboratory utilization in the diagnosis of metastasis is explored using a case study of a 39-year-old female with metastatic breast carcinoma to the brain. This case study was carried out using clinical records, laboratory results, pathology reports, and physician interviews. Cerebrospinal fluid was obtained and examined

During mammalian ontogenesis, the thymic "pure" endodermal epithelial anlage develops and differentiates into a complex cellular microenvironment. Beginning the 7-8th week of intrauterine development, thymic epithelial cells chemotactically regulate (induce) numerous waves of migration of stem cells into the thymus, including the CD34+, yolk sac-derived, committed hematopoietic stem cells. In vitro experiments have established that CD34+ CD38dim human thymocytes differentiate into T lymphocytes when co-cultured with mouse fetal thymic organs. Hematopoietic stem cells for myeloid and thymic str

Ependymoma is a relatively rare malignancy accounting for 2.0% of all primary central nervous system tumors in adults. Extracranial metastasis is a very uncommon complication of gliomas, especially of anaplastic ependymomas. The objective of this paper is to show that ependymomas can metastasize to soft tissue and lymph nodes as well as to share our approach to this challenge. We report a male patient with anaplastic ependymoma that recurred, metastasizing to the neck and lymph nodes. Metastatic disease was diagnosed based on clinical presentation of a palpable nodule on the right neck and dif

In this study, the clinical and laboratory features of children with lymphadenopathy were evaluated. Over a 3-year period, 126 patients were referred to the clinic for lymphadenopathy. Twenty-eight of cases have diseases mimicking lymphadenopathy; 98 (mean age: 86+/-55 months) have lymphadenopathy. Localized, limited, and generalized involvement was found in 52%, 30%, and 18% of patients. The most common localization was the head and neck region. The causes of lymphadenopathy were benign diseases in 75 patients. Sixty percent were reactive lymphadenopathy, 39% were lymphadenitis. Lymphadenitis

RATIONALE: Angiosarcoma is a malignant endothelial cell tumor of vascular or lymphatic origin and accounts for approximately 2% of all soft tissue neoplasms. Primary pulmonary angiosarcoma (PPA) is extremely rare, with <30 cases reported in the literature. Moreover, because of non clinical manifestation and low positive diagnostic rate of traditional, noninvasive or minimally invasive diagnostic methods, the early diagnosis of this neoplasm is really challenging.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 73-year-old woman initially presented with anemia and hemoptysis, which has occurred over a period of 4 weeks b

Background and Clinical Significance: Encephalitis is a rare neurological complication associated with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. In rare cases, focal neuroinflammation can manifest as a mass-like parenchymal lesion, creating profound diagnostic and treatment dilemmas by mimicking primary central nervous system neoplasms. Case Presentation: A 34-year-old female presented with cephalalgia, nausea, confusion, facial palsy, and a new onset of focal impaired awareness seizures (FIAS). Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a prominent hyperinte

INTRODUCTION: Tumors of the minor salivary glands in the larynx are rare and represent <1%. They usually appear between the 4(th) and 7(th) decades of life. The most common site of occurrence is the supraglottis; however, these neoplasms can appear at any location in the larynx. Pulmonary metastases are the most frequent site for distant disease.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 34-year-old Hispanic male with a history of cigarette smoking. He was admitted to our Institution in 2002 with a 1-year evolution of odynophagia, initially to solids and then to liquids. The patient was ref

The dose-response assessment of the association between 1,3-butadiene (BD) and leukemia mortality among workers in the North American synthetic rubber industry is explored. Analyses are based on the most recent University of Alabama at Birmingham epidemiological study and exposure estimation. The U.S. EPA Science Advisory Board recommendations of using the most recent data and giving consideration to peak exposures to BD have been followed. If cumulative BD ppm-years is to be used as the predictor of the leukemia rate ratio, then the performance of that predictor is statistically significantly

BACKGROUND: Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is a slow-growing neoplasm with an overall favorable prognosis, frequently disseminated via lymphatic channels in the cervical region. The occurrence of thyroid carcinoma metastasizing to the breast is infrequent, with the mechanism of dissemination remaining unclear. A 63-year-old female presented with a painful, progressive mass on the right breast upper outer quadrant for 3 months with bloody discharge from the nipple and cervical lymphadenopathy level 2-5 by axillary lymphadenopathy and shortness of breath. On examination, 8 cm ×6 cm, a well-de

Adenomatous areas are found frequently within or in the vicinity of carcinoma of the ampulla of Vater. This makes definite diagnosis difficult in the preoperative examination. The adenoma-carcinoma development hypothesis is generally accepted for colorectal tumors. Recently, a genetic alteration model during colorectal tumor development has attracted much attention, leading to various studies. We studied clinicopathologic features, prognostic factors, and the alteration of the p53 tumor suppressor gene using p53 immunohistochemical staining in pure adenomas, pure carcinomas, and carcinomas wit

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Soft tissue sarcomas are a heterogeneous group of neoplasms of mesenchymal origin. Sarcomas constitute a rare subgroup that usually affects younger age groups.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 70-year-old female who presented with a right axillary mass that had gradually increased in size over the last 8 months. Imaging revealed a heterogeneously enhancing mass that was free from the underlying muscle and joint capsule but was splaying the axillary vessels. Upfront resection of the mass was planned in the multidisciplinary meeting. Mass was excised with

3β-Hydroxysteroid-Δ24 reductase (DHCR24), the final enzyme of the cholesterol biosynthetic pathway, has been associated with urogenital neoplasms. However, the function of DHCR24 in endometrial cancer (EC) remains largely elusive. Here, we analyzed the expression profile of DHCR24 and the progesterone receptor (PGR) in our tissue microarray of EC (n = 258), the existing EC database in GEO (Gene Expression Omnibus), and TCGA (The Cancer Genome Atlas). We found that DHCR24 was significantly elevated in patients with EC, and that the up-regulation of DHCR24 was associated with advanced clinical s

BACKGROUND: Local excision of invasive cancer by transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEM) entails the risk of lymphnode metastases that obliges to radical surgery. A determination of metastatic lymph-nodes would avoid major surgery in the vast majority of cases. We applied the concept of sentinel lymphnode (SLN) biopsy to suspected invasive rectal cancers treated by TEM.
METHODS: Indocyanine green (ICG) is injected in the submucosa underneath the lesion. The tumor is dissected full-thickness until the perirectal fat. A near infra-red (NIR) optic provides a map of mesorectal lymphatics, on whic

Cervical lymphadenopathy is a common problem in children. The condition most commonly represents a transient response to a benign local or generalized infection, but occasionally it might herald the presence of a more serious disorder. Acute bilateral cervical lymphadenopathy usually is caused by a viral upper respiratory tract infection or streptococcal pharyngitis. Acute unilateral cervical lymphadenitis is caused by streptococcal or staphylococcal infection in 40% to 80% of cases. The most common causes of subacute or chronic lymphadenitis are cat scratch disease, mycobacterial infection, a
