Fn14: a new player in cancer-induced cachexia.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Although cancer cachexia is a very significant condition that is present in up to 80% of cancer cases, the cause of the condition has remained a puzzle. Cancer cachexia is a condition which is mainly characterised by muscle wasting, mobilization of fat reserves, and overall metabolic disturbance. This review aims to highlight some of the recent findings in cancer cachexia research. RECENT RESEARCH: It has been recently demonstrated that the expression of a single receptor, fibroblast growth factor-inducible 14, on a tumour can initiate cachexia and that this can be complete

[Lipoblastoma-like tumor of the vulva: A case report and review of the literature].

Lipoblastoma-like tumor of the vulva (LBLTV) was first described as a benign mesenchymal neoplasia; it was not recognized as a separate diagnosis in the 2013 WHO classification of soft-tissue tumors. To date, only 19 cases have been reported. LBLTV differential diagnosis includes other tumors of the vulvoperineal region and tumors with adipocytic differentiation, most of which are benign and thus a misdiagnosis has few clinical consequences. However, LBLTV may also mimic some aggressive lipomatous neoplasms. We describe a case of LBLTV in a 28 year-old woman and review the literature.

Cancer Cachexia and Related Metabolic Dysfunction.

Cancer cachexia is a complex multifactorial syndrome marked by a continuous depletion of skeletal muscle mass associated, in some cases, with a reduction in fat mass. It is irreversible by nutritional support alone and affects up to 74% of patients with cancer-dependent on the underlying type of cancer-and is associated with physical function impairment, reduced response to cancer-related therapy, and higher mortality. Organs, like muscle, adipose tissue, and liver, play an important role in the progression of cancer cachexia by exacerbating the pro- and anti-inflammatory response initially ac

Oncocytic adrenocortical neoplasm arising from adrenal rest in the broad ligament of the uterus.

Oncocytic adrenocortical neoplasm is characterized by abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm containing mitochondria, occasional nuclear atypia and diffuse growth pattern. Oncocytic adrenocortical neoplasm arising in adrenal rest is, however, extremely rare. We report a case of oncocytic adrenocortical neoplasm arising in adrenal rest of the broad ligament with associated marked lipomatous metaplasia. A well circumscribed tumor was accidentally detected in the pelvic cavity of a 29 year old Japanese woman, adjacent to the broad ligament of the uterus. The tumor was composed of large eosinophilic cell

Multidetector CT for Evaluation of the Extrapleural Space.

The extrapleural space (EPS) is an anatomic space at the periphery of the chest that can be involved in a number of disease processes. This space lies between the inner surface of the ribs and the parietal pleura and contains adipose tissue, loose connective tissue, lymph nodes, vessels, endothoracic fascia, and the innermost intercostal muscle. It is often overlooked on cross-sectional imaging studies and almost invariably overlooked on conventional radiographic studies. At conventional radiography, the EPS occasionally can be seen when there is extrapleural fat proliferation, which might be

Dermatofibrosarcoma Protuberans on Adult Toes: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is an uncommon, low-grade, dermal soft-tissue neoplasm with high recurrence, but low metastatic potential. It mainly occurs on the trunk, proximal extremity, head and neck, but rarely on the toes. Herein we report a case of DFSP on the right hallux. CASE REPORT: A 39-year-old male presented with a mass in the right great toe of 3.5 years. After surgical excision, histopathological evaluation of the mass showed elongated monomorphic spindle cells arranged in a storiform pattern. The tumor cells infiltrated into adjacent adipose tissue in a hon

Case Report: Metastatic renal giant-cell sarcoma in an African pygmy hedgehog (Atelerix albiventris).

The scientific literature referring to tumors in African pygmy hedgehog (Atelerix albiventris) is expanding, enhanced by an increased lifespan under human care. This study compiles the clinical records and pathologic findings in a 2-year and 7-month-old male African pygmy hedgehog (Atelerix albiventris) with a metastatic giant-cell renal sarcoma. Metastases to the lungs, retroperitoneum, lymph nodes, pericardium, and mediastinal adipose tissue were observed. Immunohistochemical assessment with a panel of 11 antibodies (cytokeratins [AE1/AE3, CK19, and CK20], vimentin, thyroid transcription fac

Renal epithelioid angiomyolipoma: A case report.

Epithelioid angiomyolipoma (EAML) of the kidney is an uncommon neoplasm with malignant potential. It can occur sporadically or be associated with tuberous sclerosis. EAML is a monotypic variant of angiomyolipoma (AML), which is classified as neoplasm of the perivascular epithelioid cell or perivascular epithelioid cell tumor. Due to its epithelioid nature and paucity of fat components, unlike classic AML, which has abundant adipose tissue with characteristic features on CT scans, it is difficult to distinguish EAML from renal cell carcinoma and fat-poor AML on CT or MRI preoperatively, which m

[Lipedema].

The "Lipedema" or "Fatedema" is conditioned by a slight mechanical obstruction of the small lymphatic vessels by the increasing pressure of the growing fat tissue. This lymphostasis in a normal lymphatic vessel system arises only with women and always symmetrically and conducts to typical complaints. Therapeutically, apart from loss in weight, only lymph drainage therapy is in a position to remove the complaints of edema.

Kidneys in infants and children: evaluation with MR.

Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging was performed in 58 children aged 1 day to 17 years. In 43 patients with suspected renal abnormalities, the results of MR were compared with those obtained by ultrasonography, computed tomography, or excretory urography. The remaining 15 children with no known renal disease were initially imaged to define the appearance on MR images of the normal kidneys according to the child's age. The signal intensity from hilar adipose tissue increased with age; corticomedullary differentiation was best seen in younger children. Compared with other imaging modalities, MR add

A case of familial angiolipomatosis with Lisch nodules.

Familial angiolipomatosis is a rare syndrome that may be confused clinically with neurofibromatosis type 1. This condition is most often inherited in an autosomal recessive manner; however, several reports have been published suggesting an autosomal dominant mode of inheritance. Angiolipomatosis, although somewhat disfiguring, is a benign condition with no known association with malignant neoplasms. This is in contradistinction to neurofibromatosis, an autosomal dominant syndrome associated with a myriad of benign and malignant neoplasms. It is, therefore, important to discriminate this entity

Fat-Containing Soft Tissue Lesions of the Limbs and Body Wall-A Pictorial Essay.

Lipomatous tumours are frequently encountered on imaging. The spectrum of lipomatous tumours ranges from simple lipomas, which can be monitored clinically, to high-grade liposarcomas, which require timely, multidisciplinary management. The presence of fat within lesions may also be observed in non-lipomatous tumours, as well as in a variety of non-neoplastic conditions. This pictorial review examines the key imaging characteristics of primary lipomatous tumours and other fat-containing soft tissue lesions that can be found in the limbs and body wall.

Body composition alterations in patients with lung cancer.

Most patients with lung cancer experience cancer cachexia (CC), a syndrome of skeletal muscle and adipose tissue wasting. Knowledge of body composition changes in patients is limited, however, because most studies have been cross-sectional, comparing patients with noncancer controls or patients with and without CC. Few studies, in contrast, have evaluated body composition in patients with lung cancer over time. This review examines our current understanding of longitudinal body composition changes in patients with lung cancer and identifies modifying factors contributing to variation in muscle

[Breast cancer, obesity and adipose tissue: a high-risk combination].

Obesity increases the occurrence of post-menopausal breast cancer and negatively affects prognosis independently of menopausal status. After summarizing the available epidemiological data concerning these associations, we will show that a deleterious crosstalk is established during tumor progression between cancer cells and the surrounding mammary adipose tissue (MAT). In obesity, the chronic sub-inflammatory state of MAT could amplify the negative effect of this crosstalk although other mechanisms also warrant further study. Finally, we will discuss the efficiency of weight loss in both prima

Lipomatous pseudohypertrophy of the pancreas: a clinicopathologically distinct entity.

OBJECTIVES: Owing to the challenges in obtaining pancreatic biopsies, pancreatic resection for presumed malignancy is often performed without histological confirmation. As a result, benign lesions are sometimes surgically removed. One such condition, which is poorly defined in the literature, is referred to as lipomatous pseudohypertrophy (LPH) of the pancreas. METHODS: Five cases of LPH were analyzed. RESULTS: Four patients underwent surgical resection, 3 of which were diagnosed preoperatively by radiology as having ductal adenocarcinoma. The fourth case was correctly interpreted by magneti

Nonadipose tissue production of leptin: leptin as a novel placenta-derived hormone in humans.

Leptin is a circulating hormone that is expressed abundantly and specifically in the adipose tissue. It is involved in the regulation of energy homeostasis, as well as the neuroendocrine and reproductive systems. Here, we demonstrate production of leptin by nonadipose tissue, namely, placental trophoblasts and amnion cells from uteri of pregnant women. We show that pregnant women secrete a considerable amount of leptin from the placenta into the maternal circulation as compared with nonpregnant obese women. Leptin production was also detected in a cultured human choriocarcinoma cell line, BeWo

Adrenal gland adenoma with myelolipoma in a canine patient: a rare case report and diagnostic insights.

Adrenal gland tumors are uncommon in dogs, and the simultaneous presence of epithelial and mesenchymal neoplasms within a single adrenal gland is exceptionally rare. We describe a rare case of an adrenocortical adenoma associated with a myelolipoma in a 7-year-old male Pekingese dog presented with acute abdominal pain and fever. Diagnostic imaging identified a well-defined mass in the right adrenal gland, with no evidence of vascular invasion or metastatic disease. Surgical adrenalectomy was subsequently performed. Histopathological evaluation revealed a well-circumscribed adrenocortical adeno

Hamartoma of the breast in two patients: A case report.

Breast hamartomas are rare, benign, tumor-like nodules composed of glandular, adipose and fibrous tissue. The hamartoma was first described in 1971 as a lipofibroadenoma, fibroadenolipoma or adenolipoma, based on the predominant component of the breast tissue. Clinical findings resemble fibroadenoma and if there is a palpable mass, the patients may receive an immediate diagnosis. Ductal hyperplasia, apocrine metaplasia, calcification and adenosis may occur within the hamartoma, with rarer instances of lobular or ductal intraepithelial neoplasms. Although hamartoma is usually benign, a malignan

Branchioma: immunohistochemical and molecular genetic study of 23 cases highlighting frequent loss of retinoblastoma 1 immunoexpression.

Branchioma is an uncommon benign neoplasm with an adult male predominance, typically occurring in the lower neck region. Different names have been used for this entity in the past (ectopic hamartomatous thymoma, branchial anlage mixed tumor, thymic anlage tumor, biphenotypic branchioma), but currently, the term branchioma has been widely accepted. Branchioma is composed of endodermal and mesodermal lineage derivatives, in particular epithelial islands, spindle cells, and mature adipose tissue without preexistent thymic tissue or evidence of thymic differentiation. Twenty-three branchiomas were
