[Histopathologic study of uterine adenomatoid tumor with special reference to histogenesis].

Twenty cases (13 from Jichi Medical School Hospital and 7 from other hospitals) of uterine adenomatoid tumor (ADT) were examined histochemically, immunohistochemically and ultrastructurally, to determine the histogenesis. For the control study, cases of malignant mesothelioma, reactive mesothelial hyperplasia, ADT of male genital organs and appendix testis were also examined. The results were summarized as follows: The age of the patients at hysterectomy ranged from 37 to 62 years with a mean of 44.6 years. Thirteen uteri containing ADT were found among 1250 hysterectomized specimens (the freq

Malignant disease of the pleura: a histopathological study with special emphasis on diagnostic criteria and differentiation from reactive mesothelium.

In order to define the histopathological criteria for the diagnosis of malignant neoplasm involving pleura, we studied 11 pleurectomy specimens containing undoubted malignant cells. The most important feature for a diagnosis of malignancy was the pattern of neoplastic infiltration of the fibrous sub-pleural tissue. These criteria were subsequently applied in a re-analysis of 76 pleural needle biopsies with a diagnosis of cancer. The patterns most frequently seen were a multi-pronged growth of at least four clusters of atypical cells in the fibrous sub-pleural tissue, a solid pattern with a lar

Binding of ovarian cancer cells to peritoneal mesothelium in vitro is partly mediated by CD44H.

Epithelial cancer of the ovary spreads by implantation of tumor cells onto the mesothelial lining of the peritoneal cavity. We have developed an in vitro binding assay using confluent monolayers of normal peritoneal mesothelial cells in order to assess the role of known adhesion proteins in this process. Cells from normal ovarian surface epithelium and the ovarian cancer cell lines CAOV-3 and SKOV-3 exhibited significant adhesion to mesothelium in vitro (range 33-56% specific binding). Although these cells expressed several adhesion molecules, including CD44 and integrins such as alpha 4 beta

Adenomatoid Tumor of Fallopian Tube With "Deciduoid" Morphology and Atypical Nuclear Features.

Adenomatoid tumor is a benign neoplasm of mesothelial origin. Adenomatoid tumor in female genital tract shows typical morphologic features with bland nuclei. Deciduoid morphology has not been reported in adenomatoid tumor. Tumors with deciduoid cells and atypical nuclear features may pose a diagnostic challenge and raise the suspicion of malignancy. We present a case of fallopian tube adenomatoid tumor with deciduoid morphology and atypical nuclear features in a 39-year-old woman with prolonged progestin therapy. We hypothesize that the unusual morphological changes in adenomatoid tumor, like

Multicystic Mesothelioma of the Omentum Presenting as an Incidental Finding.

Multicystic mesotheliomas of peritoneal origin (also termed benign multicystic mesotheliomas) are uncommon and are exceptionally rare in the omentum. Lack of familiarity of this entity could lead to overinterpretation as a malignancy or present a challenge at frozen section. We describe a case of multicystic mesothelioma arising in the omentum found incidentally at laparotomy for endometriosis. Frozen section evaluation presented a challenge. Grossly, the mass in the omentum was multicystic and mucoid, raising the concern for a mucinous neoplasm. The cysts, however, were lined by flattened cel

Imaging of mesothelioma.

Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is an asbestos-related neoplasm that originates in pleural mesothelial cells and progresses locally along the pleura until it encases the lungs and mediastinum, ultimately causing death. Imaging plays a crucial role in diagnosis and optimal management. Computed tomography (CT) continues to be the primary and initial imaging modality. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) complements CT scan and is superior in determining chest wall and diaphragmatic invasion. FDG18-PET/CT provides anatamo-metabolic information and is superior to both CT and MRI in overall stagin

Clear Cell Papillary Cystadenoma of the Ovary Masquerading as Metastatic Clear Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Clear cell papillary cystadenoma of the epididymis is an uncommon benign neoplasm, usually seen in patients with von Hippel-Lindau disease. Morphologic and immunohistochemical examination aid in distinguishing clear cell papillary cystadenoma from malignant histologic mimics including low-grade mesothelial proliferations and metastatic clear cell renal cell carcinomas. Analogous lesions have been described in the female genital tract, often posing diagnostic challenges due to their low incidence. Here, we present the difficult diagnostic aspects of the first case of clear cell papillary cystad

Non-asbestos-related malignant pleural mesothelioma.

Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is an uncommon tumor derived from mesothelial lining cells. MPM has been described as an insidious neoplasm because of its long latency period. The tumor is typically found in patients several decades after asbestos exposure. We herein describe a 26-year-old patient with MPM who presented with pleural effusion. The patient had not been exposed to asbestos or erionite. There are few case reports of non-asbestos-related MPM in young patients. We report this case to remind physicians to consider MPM in the differential diagnosis of pleural effusion in young pa

Epithelioid mesenchymal neoplasm with FUS::CREM gene fusion in the tongue: Report of a rare and challenging diagnosis.

FET (encompassing both EWSR1 and FUS) fusions with genes from the CREB family (CREB1, ATF1, and CREM) are involved in a variety of neoplasms. Recently, FET::CREB fusions were recognized in a group of malignant epithelioid neoplasm with a striking predilection to mesothelial-lined cavities and frequent cytokeratin immunoexpression. Herein, we report a rare mesenchymal neoplasm with epithelioid morphology and nonspecific immunoprofile harboring a FUS::CREM fusion arising in the oral tongue of a 53-year-old man. Histology showed a well-circumscribed tumor composed of epithelioid cells with eosino

Adenomatoid tumor of epididymidis: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Adenomatoid tumors are regarded as distinctive benign mesothelial neoplasms of the paratesticular region, most commonly occuring at the tail of the epididymidis.Because of its rarity, the clinical and histopathological aspects are discussed. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 41-year-old patient with an adenomatoid tumour located in the tail of the left epididymis that referred to our department with gradual enlarged intrascrotal mass. The diagnosis was achieved by echography, and was confirmed by surgical excision and histological analysis. CONCLUSION: Due to its low in

Epididymal Adenomatoid Tumor: A Very Rare Paratesticular Tumor of Childhood.

Adenomatoid tumor is an uncommon benign mesothelial neoplasm, usually localized in the epididymis. It is the most common paratesticular tumor of middle-aged patients (average age of clinical presentation: 36 years). However, these tumors in pediatric and pubertal patients are extremely rare. Due to their rarity, we present a case of adenomatoid tumor of the tail of the epididymis in a 16-year-old patient. After systematic research of the current literature, we did not find another case report of epididymal adenomatoid tumor in a male patient aged 16 years old or less. This notice and our conce

Uterine diffuse adenomatoid tumor. Does it represent a different biological entity?

Adenomatoid tumor represents a type of mesothelioma apparently confined to the genital tract and characterized by its benign behavior. Its morphological aspects are well known and, until now, it has been described as a nodular mass except for a case diffusely infiltrating the entire myometrium in an immunosuppressed patient. We report a case of benign mesothelial tumor characterized by histological, immunophenotypical and ultrastructural features of an otherwise typical adenomatoid tumor but diffusely growing below uterine serosal surface into the myometrium without discernible borders. The ex

Adrenal Cysts: To Operate or Not to Operate?

Adrenal cysts are uncommon and usually asymptomatic, and therefore are usually incidentally discovered adrenal lesions. They have a broad pathohistological spectrum that includes pseudocysts and endothelial (vascular), parasitic, and epithelial (mesothelial) cysts. Although most adrenal cysts are benign and hormonally non-functional lesions, some can have ambiguous imaging appearances and mimic malignant adrenal neoplasms. On the other hand, the actual malignant neoplasms could undergo cystic transformation. Additionally, immune cell infiltrations, thrombosis, or haemorrhage seen in sepsis can

Multicystic peritoneal mesothelioma with floret-like multinucleated giant cells: A case report.

Multicystic peritoneal mesothelioma is an uncommon neoplasm characterized by multiple cysts adhering to the abdominal cavity. The symptoms are nonspecific, and their severity appears to be related to the size and location of the cysts. We report the case of a 55-year-old man with morbid obesity in whom a multiloculated mesenteric mass was incidentally discovered on abdominal ultrasound. Complementary imaging studies revealed a multicystic peritoneal tumour with a maximum diameter of 32cm, located in the pelvis and extending to the right hemiabdomen. Histologically, multiple cysts lined by meso

Primary Peritoneal Mesothelioma: Diagnostic Challenges of This Lethal Imposter.

Primary Peritoneal Mesothelioma is a rapidly aggressive and rare neoplasm that arises from the lining of mesothelial cells of the peritoneum and spreads extensively within the confines of the abdominal cavity. The pathogenesis of all forms of mesothelioma is strongly associated with industrial pollutants, of which asbestos is the principal carcinogen. Characteristically, asbestos exposure has a strong relationship with mesothelioma of the pleura, but the peritoneal cavity is the second most commonly affected site. Additionally, in contrast to pleural mesothelioma, which has a male predominance

An unusual presentation of acute abdomen: infarcted peritoneal cyst-a probable asbestos-related benign cystic mesothelioma.

This is a report of a rare case of an infarcted pelvic intra-abdominal cyst, having no mesenteric connection presenting as an acute abdomen. The patient had significant asbestos exposure. The cyst was treated successfully by surgical excision. Histopathology showed an infarcted cyst; the lining was destroyed, precluding marker studies. A diagnosis of benign cystic peritoneal mesothelioma (BCPM) was made by excluding other causes of solitary pelvic intra-abdominal cysts. BCPM has been classified as an asbestos-related neoplasm and is usually seen in the pelvis adjunct to the urinary bladder. On

Chemotherapy treatment in malignant pleural mesothelioma: a difficult history.

Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a rare neoplasm that typically arises from mesothelial surfaces of the pleural cavity. Despite treatment improvements, it carries a dismal prognosis. The majority of patients either have unresectable disease or are not candidates for surgery due to medical comorbidities or old age. For such patients, chemotherapy (CT) represents the gold-standard treatment. To date, combination CT with cisplatin plus pemetrexed represents the most widely used regimen in first-line setting for patients with unresectable MPM. Other first-line options are currently availabl

Adenomatatoid tumor: Cytological diagnosis of two cases.

Adenomatoid tumor is a benign neoplasm of mesothelial cell origin that occurs in both male and female genital tracts. Fine needle aspiration cytology has an important role in the preoperative diagnosis of the male genital adenomatoid tumor and is a rapid, reliable, conclusive, and cost-effective diagnostic tool that can be used to take appropriate surgical decisions. Pathologists should be aware of the cytological features of such lesions so as to avoid diagnostic pitfalls. We present here two cases, one in the testis and another in the epididymis in a 35 year-old and a 30 year-old male respec

Paramesonephric papillary serous cystadenocarcinoma: a case report with scanning electron microscopy.

A case report of a malignant tumor, presumably paramesonephric in origin, is presented. Although uncommon, malignancies of the cystic structures of the broad ligament have been reported. The embryologic derivations and histologic feature of these tumors--mesonephric, mesothelial and paramesonephric--have been describe extensively, but no primary lesion has been evaluated previously by scanning electron microscopy. A prior laparotomy and biopsy with a diagnosis of a malignant papillary growth, probably paramesonephric, stimulated the examination of fresh tissue by an ETEC Autoscan scanning elec
