BACKGROUND: Giant cell tumor of soft tissue is a low malignant uncommon neoplasm, with histologic features and immunophenotype similar to its bone counterpart. Primary giant cell tumor of soft tissue in the thyroid gland is considered an exceedingly rare entity.
CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a case of primary thyroid giant cell tumor of soft tissue in a 69-year-old Chinese female patient. Neck ultrasonography showed a 19 mm × 12 mm × 5 mm nodule with heterogeneous echo and clear boundary located within the left thyroid. Histopathological examination revealed that the neoplasm was composed of

The endopelvic fascia is a biomechanical network of supportive tissue that suspends and secures the female reproductive organs to the pelvic sidewall. Several visceral adnexal and uterine ligaments are part of this framework, and we have observed that smooth muscle tumors (SMTs) arising from these structures morphologically resemble gynecologic smooth muscle neoplasms. To determine whether gynecologic smooth muscle tumor criteria for malignancy are valid in these tumors, we evaluated the morphologic features of 67 tumors from 67 patients and correlated our findings with patient outcome. A 53-year-old female visited us with an asymptomatic renal mass, which was incidentally found on abdominal ultrasonography (US). US showed a heterogeneous renal mass measuring 5 cm in diameter. Computed tomorraphy and magnetic resonance imaging showed that the tumor was mixed with muscle and fat tissue, faintly enhanced, and located at the lower portion of the left kidney. Although renal angiomyolipoma (AML) was suspected from these findings, we could not rule out a malignant tumor. Therefore, she underwent a laparoscopic partial nephrectomy. Histopathological examination revealed the tumor co

BACKGROUND: Spindle cell neoplasms of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract constitute a wide group of lesions that may raise diagnostic difficulties on hematoxylin-eosin-stained slides. Appropriate endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) technique with sufficient cell block material for immunohistochemistry (IHC) can lead to accurate diagnosis.
METHODS: This is a retrospective study of 29 cases obtained from our institution's records over a five-year period (2011-2015). Cytomorphology, histology (when available), IHC, FNA procedure details, imaging characteristics, and clinic

Renal angiomyolipoma (AML), a rare benign mesenchymal neoplasm, is characterized by the presence of vessels, smooth muscle, and adipose tissue. Treatment should be considered for symptomatic patients or for those at risk for complications, in particular for retroperitoneal bleeding, which is correlated to the size of the tumor, grade of the angiogenic component, and presence of tuberous sclerosis complex. Herein, we report the case of a 39-year-old female with renal AML who was treated in a conservative approach by super-selective embolization.

Connective tissue disorders correspond to a heterogeneous group of inflammatory diseases characterized by abnormal immune system activity leading to connective tissue alterations in multiple parts of the body. In adults, connective tissue disorders include rheumatoid arthritis, progressive systemic sclerosis, Sjögren syndrome, systemic lupus erythematosus, dermatomyositis and polymyositis, ankylosing spondylitis, and mixed connective tissue disease. Broncho-pulmonary involvement may be variable with involvement of all anatomical components of the lung. Involvement of other intrathoracic struct

CD34 is a myeloid progenitor cell antigen present in endothelial cells and some other mesenchymal cells, including perivascular and periadnexal dermal fibroblasts. It was evaluated immunohistochemically in uterine stromal tissue and in 4 aggressive angiomyxomas and 6 endometrial stromal sarcomas with potentially related and similar stromal tissues. The stromal cells in normal endocervix and endocervical polyps were strongly CD34 positive irrespective of the cycle phase, and negative for muscle actins. Ectocervical stroma was variably but generally less CD34 reactive. In the endometrium, the CD

Myositis is defined as inflammation within skeletal muscle and is a subcategory of myopathy, which is more broadly defined as any disorder affecting skeletal muscle. Myositis may be encountered as a component of autoimmune and connective tissue diseases, where it is described as idiopathic inflammatory myopathy (IIM). Myositis can also be caused by infections as well as toxins and drugs, including newer classes of medications. MRI plays an important role in the diagnosis and evaluation of patients with suspected myositis, but many entities may have imaging features similar to those of myositis

Uterine sarcomas are uncommon mesenchymal neoplasms ranging from low- to high-grade or undifferentiated. High-grade sarcomas are characterized by various morphologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular alterations. Here, we report the first description of a patient with uterine sarcoma with a MEIS2::FOXO4 fusion. This tumor showed alternating fascicular and diffuse architecture with a prominent nodular growth displaying striking hyalinization and less prominent myxoid background admixed with more cellular internodular areas. The neoplastic cells ranged from spindled to stellate to epithelioid

Our aims were to identify pericyte-specific markers for the analysis of formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded human tissue samples, and to characterize perivascular myoid cell neoplasms phenotypically. Previously identified pericyte markers failed to distinguish pericytes from other cellular types, such as vascular smooth muscle cells (vSMCs) and fibroblasts, in immunohistochemistry analysis. However, we compared gene expression profiles between pericytes, vSMCs, and fibroblasts, and performed human skin vasculature immunohistochemistry analysis, which led to the identification of myosin 1B (MYO1B

Leiomyosarcomas are rare malignant mesenchymal neoplasms originating from smooth muscle cells. Although leiomyosarcoma is commonly located in the female reproductive system, gastrointestinal tract, and subcutaneous tissues, it is a rare entry in the head and neck area, probably due to the scarcity of smooth muscle tissue in this topographical region. Herein we present a histopathological case report of a 60-year-old male with a slow-growing painless mass on the middle third of the right lateral lingual margin, with focal ulceration measuring 1x1.5cm. After gross excision, histopathology reveal

Extramedullary plasmacytomas are rare neoplasms arising from proliferations of monoclonal plasma cells. In primary form, these malignancies occur without other sites of plasma cell disease. Secondary extramedullary plasmacytomas occur in association with multiple myeloma and may be discovered during initial intramedullary disease or may occur during multiple myeloma relapse. In very rare instances, secondary extramedullary plasmacytomas have multifocal skeletal muscle involvement. We present a case of multifocal skeletal muscle plasmacytomas in a 58-year-old man with shoulder-reduced range of

Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome characterized by renal phosphate wasting, resulting in hypophosphatemia and altered bone turnover. It is most frequently caused by phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors (PMTs), a rare and distinct group of neoplasms. Patients with TIO exhibit clinical features of osteomalacia, including bone and muscle pain, severe muscle weakness, gait disturbance, and increased susceptibility to fracture. PMTs exhibit pananatomic distribution, in soft tissue or bones, but are most commonly found in the lower extremities, followed by the head and ne

INTRODUCTION: Oral leiomyomas are rare, benign neoplasms of smooth muscle origin, presenting as a solitary, asymptomatic, nodular mass.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here we present the case of a 54-year-old male with a lesion in the midline of his hard palate, which was diagnosed as a localized benign leiomyoma, along with a review of the recent literature.
DISCUSSION: Diagnosis of a leiomyoma must be based on the histopathological assessment of tissue as the clinical appearance is non-specific. The peak prevalence of head and neck leiomyoma is observed in the 4th and 5th decade of life with uncertain

Calcifying fibrous tumor is an uncommon entity with distinctive pathologic features. Most calcifying fibrous tumors involve the peripheral soft tissues or serosal surfaces, with reports of visceral examples of this lesion being extremely limited. We report the clinical and pathologic features of an unusual case of calcifying fibrous tumor occurring in the adrenal gland of a 32-year-old woman. Microscopically, the lesion was well circumscribed and composed of dense, poorly cellular collagenous tissue, scattered spindle cells, an inflammatory infiltrate consisting of plasma cells and lymphocytes

INTRODUCTION: Mammary-type myofibroblastoma of the soft tissue is a very rare, benign, mesenchymal neoplasm with myofibroblastic differentiation. To date, 20 cases of extra-mammary myofibroblastoma have been described in literature. To the best of our knowledge, this is the largest extra-mammary myofibroblastoma described in the literature, and the first case reported in this location.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 50-year-old Pakistani man presented with a long history of a painless, huge lump on his right thigh. His clinical examination showed normal-looking skin and there was no inguinal lymphadeno

Tumor-like malformative lesions are seen throughout the body, and they may be confused with true neoplasms by clinicians and pathologists alike. In the lungs, they are principally represented by hamartomas-which may contain chondroid, adipocytic, fibroblastic, and myxoid tissue, with entrapped bronchiolar epithelium-and congenital pulmonary airway malformations (CPAMs). The latter have been subdivided into 5 groups, based on their histological features, but they basically comprise proliferations of malformed bronchopulmonary tissues of different types. Type 1 lesions have a capacity for malign

Gastrointestinal leiomyosarcoma is a rare malignant smooth-muscle neoplasm that may be difficult to diagnose using superficial mucosal biopsy. A 44-year-old woman presented with chronic intermittent abdominal pain and microcytic hypochromic anemia. Retrograde single-balloon enteroscopy identified an ulcerated, stenosing lesion in the distal ileum, whereas six forceps biopsy specimens showed only inflammation and granulation tissue. Segmental ileal resection was therefore performed because malignancy remained strongly suspected. Histological examination demonstrated a spindle-cell neoplasm with

Leiomyomas are benign tumours of smooth-muscle origin representing 4.4% of all benign soft-tissue neoplasms. They are classified as cutaneous, vascular and leiomyomas of deep soft tissues. Leiomyomas rarely occur in extremities and are more common in the lower limb than in the upper extremity. Deep soft tissue leiomyomas are even rare with a very few reported cases so far in the literature. A 25-year-old female presented to us with an atraumatic slowly enlarging mass in the right forearm from 6 months with mild erosion of cortex of radius. She was otherwise healthy, MRI revealed a soft tissue

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Colonic inflammation may lead to motility disturbances, including severe atony. Nitric oxide is released by inflamed tissue and induces smooth muscle relaxation. The aim of this study was to analyze NO generation pathways in colonic tissue from patients who had ulcerative colitis with or without toxic megacolon and in tumor-free samples from patients with colonic neoplasm.
METHODS: Enzymatic activity was determined by transformation of [14C]arginine to [14C]citrulline in mucosa and muscular layer samples. Immunostaining of tissue sections with antibody against inducible NO
