Pediatric neoplastic extraocular soft-tissue lesions in the orbit are uncommon. Early multimodality imaging work-up and recognition of the key imaging features of these lesions allow narrowing of the differential diagnoses in order to direct timely management. In this paper, the authors present a multimodality approach to the imaging work-up of these lesions and highlight the use of ocular ultrasound as a first imaging modality where appropriate. We will discuss vascular neoplasms (congenital hemangioma, infantile hemangioma), optic nerve lesions (meningioma, optic nerve glioma), and other neo

Glomus tumors are rare benign neoplasms arising from the glomus bodies of the skin; they account for 1.6 % of all soft tissue tumors. Since the great majority of these lesions are found on fingers and toes (especially under the nail, on the fingertip, or in the foot), a correct clinical diagnosis may prove difficult if one or more glomus tumors occur on an extra digital location. We report a case of a glomus tumor with prominent vascular component found in the left leg closely related to a branch of the sural nerve and originally believed to be a schwannoma.

Localized soft tissue and bone overgrowth may be the result of many different causes and will vary in severity, from involvement of a single digit to one half of the body. There are a variety of causes, including chronic lymphedema; lymphangiomatous malformations; neurofibromatosis; vascular malformations including the Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber syndrome; macrodystrophia lipomatosa; multiple enchondromatosis and Maffucci's syndrome. More recently, the Bannayan syndrome and the Proteus syndrome have been documented among the causes. Unexplained hemihypertrophy may also occur in association with in

Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma is a rare vascular tumor and locally aggressive endothelial-derived spindle cell neoplasm, which occurs almost exclusively in infants and adolescents. Radiologically, hemangioendothelioma, including Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma, is seen as a highly vascularized well-enhancing tumor, but no characteristic findings differentiate Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma from other soft-tissue tumors, particularly when the tumor is too small to have any locally aggressive features or identifiable large vessels. We present a case of Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma in the i

Hemangiopericytoma is a vascular neoplasm consisting of capillaries outlined by an intact basement membrane that separates the endothelial cells of the capillaries from the spindle-shaped tumor cells in the extravascular area. These neoplasms are found in soft tissues but have rarely been shown to involve the spinal canal. This is a report of three such cases. Surgical removal of the tumor from the spinal canal was technically difficult. A high risk of recurrence has been reported but in these three cases adjunctive radiotherapy appeared to be of benefit in controlling the progression of the d

Angiolipomas are neoplasms composed of mature adipocytes admixed with abnormal vascular elements. They are most commonly found in the subcutaneous tissue of the trunk and extremities, but other sites have been reported. The craniospinal axis is an uncommon but significant site. An extensive review of the literature is conducted. We summarize 94 cases of angiolipomas in the central nervous system (CNS) in 92 patients, including five in our own series, to highlight the most prominent features of these tumors. The increasing number of cases of CNS angiolipoma in the era of magnetic resonance imag

Glomus tumors are mesenchymal neoplasms derived from glomus bodies with rare presentations in the oral cavity. Glomus tumors present as a purple or pink vascular nodule or papule, sized <1 cm, and imitate vascular neoplasms such as hemangiopericytoma or hemangioma. Glomus tumors represent less than 2% of all benign soft tissue tumors. Only 27 cases of benign glomus tumors with oral cavity involvement have been reported to date. The most-reported oral tumors involved the lips (54.2%), followed by hard palate, gingiva, tongue, and buccal mucosa. The mean age of presentation of the labial glomus

Kaposi sarcoma is a low-grade vascular neoplasm that has been shown by molecular analysis to uniformly express the latent nuclear antigen-1 of human herpes virus 8. Differentiating Kaposi sarcoma from other benign or malignant vascular tumors, as well as other nonvascular spindle cell soft-tissue neoplasms, can be challenging. Thus, detection of human herpes virus 8 in fixed tissues would be diagnostically useful. Recently, a monoclonal antibody to human herpes virus 8 latent nuclear antigen-1 has become commercially available for immunohistochemical analysis. We sought to study the sensitivit

Hemangioma is a vascular neoplasm and one of the most common benign tumors. The pathogenesis of hemangioma has not been fully understood. CIZ1 (Cip1-interacting zinc finger protein 1) is a nuclear protein and the binding partner of p21. Dysregulation of CIZ1 expression has been reported in various types of cancerous tissues. In this study, we examined CIZ1 expression in hemangioma of the tongue and explored its function in vascular endothelial cells, the proliferative cell type in hemangioma. Immunohistochemistry showed that CIZ1 was highly expressed in hemangioma of the tongue while its expre

The authors report the case of an 81-year-old male who presented with a 3-year-history of a bluish, nodular tumour located on the extensor side of his right forearm. Subjective symptoms included tenderness upon palpation and spontaneous haemorrhage. In order to exclude malignant neoplasms, for example, nodular melanoma, metastatic melanoma or angiosarcoma, the tumour was surgically removed and tissue submitted for microscopic examination. Histologically, the authors diagnosed this as giant vascular eccrine spiradenoma, a rare variant of eccrine spiradenoma, which can easily be mistaken for ang

Hemangiomas are benign vascular neoplasms characterized by an abnormal proliferation of blood vessels. They may occur in any vascularized tissue including skin, subcutaneous tissue, muscle, and bone. Intraosseous hemangiomas are uncommon, constituting less than 1% of all osseous tumors. The most frequent sites are the calvaria and the vertebral column. Involvement of the facial bones is rare and occurs most commonly in the maxilla, mandible, and nasal bones. In literature, only 20 cases of zygomatic involvement have been reported. We report a case of an intraosseous hemangioma of the zygoma wi

Malignant cells are susceptible to high temperatures, and recent technical advances have allowed heat to be concentrated at the site of the neoplasm in vivo. The mechanism(s) of hyperthermic cytotoxicity is(are) unclear but may involve cellular accumulation of nuclear proteins, plasma membrane damage, and/or lysosomal effects. Three methods of localized hyperthermia delivery have been described: ultrasound, radiofrequency, and microwave. All involve production of high-energy save forms which are produced by passing electrical energy through an oscillator that produces heat of sufficient magnit

Pediatric hepatic vascular tumors (HVTs) are rare neoplasms with features distinct from their cutaneous counterparts. Their behavior ranges from benign to malignant, with each subtype having therapeutic differences. Histopathologic descriptions of large cohorts are scarce in the literature. Thirty-three putative HVTs diagnosed from 1970 to 2021 were retrieved. All available clinical and pathologic materials were reviewed. Lesions were reclassified according to the World Health Organization (WHO) classification of pediatric tumors [1] as hepatic congenital hemangioma (HCH; n = 13), hepatic infa

Cutaneous vascular tumors constitute a heterogeneous group of entities that share overlapping morphologic and immunohistochemical features, which can be diagnostically challenging for pathologists and dermatopathologists. Our understanding and knowledge of vascular neoplasms have improved over time, resulting in both a refinement of their classification by the International Society for the Study of Vascular Anomalies (ISSVA) and an improvement in the accurate diagnosis and clinical management of vascular neoplasms. This review article aims to summarize the updated clinical, histopathological,

CONTEXT: Perivascular epithelial cell tumors (PEComas) are a family of rare mesenchymal neoplasms which share cellular, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural characteristics but are found in different visceral and soft tissue sites. PEComas of the pancreas are extremely rare neoplasms.
CASE REPORT: We describe a 49-year-old male who was incidentally diagnosed with a pancreatic mass. Endoscopic ultrasound-guided biopsy suggested a PEComa. An uneventful pylorus-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy was thus performed. The tumor was a solid well-circumscribed mass in the pancreatic head with dila

Vascular tumors represent only a sliver of all tumors affecting the mediastinum, but they pose diagnostic challenges due to significant overlap among entities, ever-evolving classification schemes, and the exquisite rarity of some of the entities not only in the mediastinum but in pathology practice as a whole. Most of the vascular tumors are better known to the practice of soft tissue pathology, from which some of the knowledge of clinical behavior can be extrapolated. For example, the stratification of epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (EHE) into two biologically separate categories has effec

Epithelioid angioleiomyoma (EALM) is rare in the skin and subcutaneous tissues. To the best of our knowledge, only two previous cases of this tumor have been reported. We document here the case of an 83-year-old woman who underwent complete removal of a squamous cell carcinoma of the retromolar trigone and lymph node dissection of the neck. An incidental EALM was observed in the adipose tissue. The tumor formed a unilocular, poorly demarcated neoplasm measuring 0.3 cm, and showed cavernous angiomatous spaces with villiform growth of large epithelioid cells arranged in clusters. Besides the epi

A limited prospective study of 334 peritoneal and pleural fluids demonstrated Curschmann's spirals in 12 specimens, a prevalence of 1 in 28 cases. Nine of these 12 specimens were peritoneal washings, 2 specimens were pleural fluids, and 1 specimen was a peritoneal dialysis fluid. The fluids came from nine women and three men. Both pleural fluids were from men (one with a history of lung adenocarcinoma and one with probable collagen vascular disease). The peritoneal dialysis fluid was from a man with renal failure. Seven of the nine women with peritoneal washing specimens had gynecologic cancer

Angioleiomyoma (vascular leiomyoma/angiomyoma) is a morphologically distinctive tumor characterized by proliferating smooth muscle cells admixed with prominent vascular elements. The majority of angioleiomyomas involve the superficial soft tissues. Examples of this lesion originating in bone, particularly in the appendicular skeleton, are extremely rare. The present report details the clinicopathologic features of an unusual case of an intraosseous angioleiomyoma arising in the distal tibia. The skeletal tumor exhibited the typical histologic appearance and immunophenotypic features of this en

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the sonographic features of secondary involvement of skin and subcutaneous tissues by hematologic malignancies.
METHODS: A review of the ultrasound and pathology databases yielded 10 cases with 13 skin and subcutaneous tissue lesions secondary to hematologic neoplasms, which were confirmed by pathology. We used ultrasound to assess the number, location, size, depth of involvement, echogenicity, and vascularity of the lesions.
RESULTS: The study involved five male and five female patients, including four leukemia, two multiple myeloma, and four lymphoma patients. The a
