Ureteroscopy assisted retrograde nephrostomy: a new technique for percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL).

UNLABELLED: Study Type - Therapy (case series). Level of Evidence 4. What's known on the subject? and What does the study add? Retrograde nephrostomy was first developed by Lawson et al. in 1983, and Hunter et al. reported 30 cases of retrograde nephrostomy in 1987. This procedure uses less radiation exposure and has a shorter duration compared with the previous percutaneous nephrostomy techniques. Retrograde nephrostomy using Lawson's procedure was reported in the late 1980s by several authors. But since then, few studies have been reported about this procedure due to the development of ultra

A randomized controlled trial of nephrostomy placement versus tubeless percutaneous nephrolithotomy.

PURPOSE: We established whether totally tubeless percutaneous nephrolithotomy with no nephrostomy or ureteral stent is a safe management technique. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients were randomized to have a nephrostomy placed (group 1 control) or none (group 2 treatment). A total of 25 patients were randomized to each group. Cases were considered uncomplicated and suitable for randomization if there was no significant bleeding or residual stone load, the pelvicaliceal system was intact and there was no evidence of a residual ureteral stone. The primary outcome measure was length of stay, and s

[Percutaneous nephrostomy: indications, techniques and results. Retrospective study of 81 cases].

A retrospective study has been made of 81 cases of percutaneous nephrostomy (PCN) which were treated during the period 1989-1998. The mean patient age was 41 years (age range: 21-66 years). The reasons for the diversion via nephrostomy catheter were oligoanuria (43 cases), pyonephrosis (34 cases), and evaluation of renal function (four cases). The initial disease was found to be malignant in 23.25% of cases of oligoanuria, with six cancers of the cervix, three bladder cancers and one prostate cancer. Lithiasis was the main etiology in subjects with benign disease, and was the causative factor

Percutaneous nephrostomy catheter use in gynecologic malignancy: M.D. Anderson Hospital experience.

The clinical courses of 30 patients with 41 nephrostomy catheters were followed. Duration of drainage ranged from 2 days to 15 months with a mean of 3.7 months. The most common complications were hemorrhage (28%), infection (70%), and blockage of catheter (65%). No deaths occurred as a result of these complications. Renal function recovered in 14 of 20 patients (70%) who presented with elevated creatinine values. Twenty-six of 28 patients with malignant obstruction were able to receive further therapy. The only long-term survivors presented with primary advanced cervical cancer.

Percutaneous nephrostomy for complex renal stones: Percutaneous renal access behind the stone versus renal calyx dilation.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the technical success rate and complications associated with percutaneous nephrostomy (PCN) via percutaneous renal access behind the stone and renal calyx dilation in patients with complex renal stones. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From January 2010 to February 2021, we identified 69 patients with 70 complex renal stones who underwent PCN. Complex renal stones were classified as simple (renal pelvis only) (27.1%, 19/70), borderline staghorn (8.6%, 6/70), partial staghorn (51.4%, 36/70), or complete staghorn (12.9%, 9/70). All PCNs were performed under ultrasound and fluorosco

Rod Test in Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy: A Practical Guide to Selective Nephrostomy Placement.

INTRODUCTION: Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is the gold standard for treating renal calculi. With the advancement in technology, the recent trend has been toward tubeless procedures, but some cases still need placement of a nephrostomy. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The objective of our study was to assess the intraoperative role of the "metal dilator rod" in deciding whether to place a nephrostomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective study was conducted from 15 November 2024 to 15 May 2025, and 83 consecutive patients undergoing PCNL were included in the study. All procedures were performed b

Horseshoe Kidney Injury Managed With Percutaneous Nephrostomy for Urinoma: A Case Report.

Horseshoe kidney injuries are rare, and whether their management is similar to that of common renal injuries remains unclear. We present the case of a 41-year-old man who bruised his abdomen while riding a bicycle and experienced persistent abdominal pain. His vital signs were stable, but he had significant tenderness below the umbilicus. Contrast-enhanced abdominal computed tomography revealed a horseshoe kidney injury, urine leakage, and a urinoma. Conservative treatment was performed, but the urinoma continued to enlarge. Percutaneous drainage was performed on the seventh day in the hospita

In Vitro Study of Antimicrobial Percutaneous Nephrostomy Catheters for Prevention of Renal Infections.

Percutaneous nephrostomy (PCN) catheters are the primary method for draining ureters obstructed by malignancy and preventing a decline of renal function. However, PCN catheter-related infections, such as pyelonephritis and urosepsis, remain a significant concern. Currently, no antimicrobial PCN catheters are available for preventing infection complications. Vascular catheters impregnated with minocycline-rifampin (M/R) and M/R with chlorhexidine coating (M/R plus CHD) have previously demonstrated antimicrobial activity. Therefore, in this study, we examined whether these combinations could be

Feasibility and Usefulness of Intra-Cavitary Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound in Percutaneous Nephrostomy.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and utility of intra-cavitary contrast enhanced ultrasound (ICCEUS) in guiding percutaneous nephrostomy (PCN) and assessing complications. Forty-five ultrasound-guided PCNs were performed in 35 patients with hydronephrosis resulting from urinary tract obstruction. Ultrasound contrast agent (0.1 mL diluted in 20-30 mL saline) was injected through the puncture needle and the drainage tube to precisely locate the device and obstruction, with the fluoroscopy results considered the gold standard. ICCEUS was performed again the next day to assess

Is the 10th and 11th intercostal space a safe approach for percutaneous nephrostomy and nephrolithotomy?

The aim of this study was to determine the rate of complications in percutaneous nephrostomy (PCN) and nephrolithotomy (PCNL) performed through the 11th and 10th intercostal spaces using our monitoring technique and to discuss the safety of the procedure. Out of 398 PCNs and PCNLs carried out during a 3-year period, 56 patients had 57 such procedures performed using an intercostal approach. The 11th intercostal route was used in 42 and the 10th in 15 cases. One patient had two separate nephrostomies performed through the 10th and 11th intercostal spaces. The technique utilizes bi-planar fluoro

[Percutaneous nephrostomy in the treatment of pyonephrosis. A comparative study apropos of 36 cases].

This study is a comparison of the treatments used in 36 patients suffering from pyonephrosis. The patients were subdivided in two groups: cases having undergone previous percutaneous drainage; and cases having undergone primary nephrectomy. These latter cases presented a high complication rate. We believe that preliminary drainage by percutaneous nephrostomy, constitutes the procedure of choice, when ever possible, to drain the kidney and prepare the patient for nephrectomy.

The use of percutaneous nephrostomy in patients with ureteric obstruction undergoing renal transplantation.

The use of percutaneous nephrostomy with or without placement of a ureteric stent has been of increasing aid in treating both acute and chronic ureteral obstruction in recipients of renal allografts. Eight patients who underwent transplantation, had ureteric obstruction develop and were treated by this means are reported herein. The technique is standard and can be performed in an arteriography suite. Once a catheter is inserted into the allograft collecting system, a nephrostomy tube or a stent, or both, is easily inserted. Three of the patients had acute ureteric obstruction secondary to clo

Treatment of neonatal hydronephrosis by malformation of the ureteropelvic junction: interest of percutaneous nephrostomy.

The authors have studied 42 children less than 1 month of age, who had hydronephrosis due to ureteropelvic junction obstruction. Most of them were detected by antenatal ultrasound. Bilateral forms were found in 13 patients. Thus a total of 55 kidneys were involved. Three forms were distinguished. The benign forms (n = 15) were operated. The mild forms (n = 29) must be operated, but not in emergency. Immediate complications (n = 5) and failures (n = 4) are more frequent than in older children. The severe forms (n = 11) are characterized by renal mutation on IVU. In these forms, percutaneous nep

Biofilm Formation in Indwelling Percutaneous Nephrostomy Catheters: Luminal Loss and Bacterial Colonization.

PURPOSE: Biofilm formation on the surface of percutaneous nephrostomy and percutaneous nephroureteral catheters is presumed to result in luminal narrowing and predispose to infection. This presumption drives clinical practice in varying ways. However, no study thus far has quantifiably characterized biofilm development in percutaneous nephrostomy/percutaneous nephroureteral catheters. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this prospective study, removed percutaneous nephrostomy and percutaneous nephroureteral catheters were collected from patients undergoing catheter exchange. Catheters were stained with
