GHRH and its analogues in central nervous system diseases.

Growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) is primarily produced by the hypothalamus and stimulates the release of growth hormone (GH) in the anterior pituitary gland, which subsequently regulates the production of hepatic insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1). GH and IGF-1 have potent effects on promoting cell proliferation, inhibiting cell apoptosis, as well as regulating cell metabolism. In central nerve system (CNS), GHRH/GH/IGF-1 promote brain development and growth, stimulate neuronal proliferation, and regulate neurotransmitter release, thereby participating in the regulation of various CNS

Enteric Nervous System and Its Relationship with Neurological Diseases.

The enteric nervous system (ENS) is a fundamental component of the gastrointestinal system, composed of a vast network of neurons and glial cells. It operates autonomously but is interconnected with the central nervous system (CNS) through the vagus nerve. This communication, known as the gut-brain axis, influences the bidirectional communication between the brain and the gut. Background/Objectives: This study aimed to review neurological pathologies related to the ENS. Methods: To this end, a comprehensive literature search was conducted in the "PubMed" database. Articles available in "free f

Central nervous system diseases related to pathological microglial phagocytosis.

Microglia are important phagocytes of the central nervous system (CNS). They play an important role in protecting the CNS by clearing necrotic tissue and apoptotic cells in many CNS diseases. However, recent studies have found that microglia can phagocytose parts of neurons excessively, such as the neuronal cell body, synapse, or myelin sheaths, before or after the onset of CNS diseases, leading to aggravated injury and impaired tissue repair. Meanwhile, reduced phagocytosis of synapses and myelin results in abnormal circuit connections and inhibition of remyelination, respectively. Previous s

Understanding Childhood Neuroimmune Diseases of the Central Nervous System.

Immune-mediated diseases of the central nervous system (CNS) in childhood are a heterogeneous group of rare conditions sharing the inflammatory involvement of the CNS. This review highlights the growing knowledge of childhood neuroimmune diseases that primarily affect the CNS, outlining the clinical and diagnostic features, the pathobiological mechanisms and genetics, current treatment options, and emerging challenges. The clinical spectrum of these conditions is increasingly expanded, and the underlying mechanisms of dysregulation of the immune system could vary widely. Cell-mediated and anti

Atypical Pediatric Demyelinating Diseases of the Central Nervous System.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Pediatric central nervous system demyelinating diseases include multiple sclerosis (MS), neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD), and acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM). As diagnostic criteria become more inclusive, the risk of misdiagnosis of atypical demyelinating diseases of rheumatologic, infectious, and autoimmune etiology increases. RECENT FINDINGS: We review mimics of multiple sclerosis, neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder, and acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, including rheumatologic diseases: systemic lupus erythematosus and neuro-Behçet dise

[Pathomechanism of Autoantibody Production in the Nervous System Diseases].

Antibodies to different brain and peripheral nerve proteins have recently been found to be associated with several different autoimmune diseases. They can bind to either neuronal or non-neuronal antigens and may have a pathogenic role by themselves or in synergy with other inflammatory mediators after penetrating the blood-brain barrier or the blood-nerve barrier. In this review, we will describe the association with the impairment of immune tolerance, innate immunity, and autoantibody production of myasthenia gravis (MG), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS).

The Equine Neonatal Central Nervous System: Development and Diseases.

Neonatal encephalopathy is the most common neurologic condition affecting newborn foals and shares similarities with perinatal asphyxia syndrome of human infants. In many cases of neonatal encephalopathy there is no obvious episode of acute or chronic hypoxia and other mechanisms likely play a role in the pathogenesis. Increased concentrations of neuroactive progestagens are found in affected foals; whether these molecules are protective, as has been suggested, or play a role in the pathogenesis is unknown. Neurologic diseases other than neonatal encephalopathy affect foals occasionally and sh

Central nervous system diseases due to opportunistic and coinfections.

With the widespread use of combination antiretroviral therapy (cART), the incidence of central nervous system (CNS) opportunistic infections and coinfections has significantly decreased. This review focuses on the clinical presentation, diagnostic laboratory and radiologic findings, as well as the treatment of neurosyphilis, progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, primary CNS lymphoma, and toxoplasmosis, which are CNS opportunistic infections and coinfections that are most relevant to clinicians in North America.

Biochemical markers of autoimmune diseases of the nervous system.

Biochemical biomarkers are important candidates for the diagnosis and prognosis of neurological diseases of autoimmune etiology, since they may reflect the presence, nature and intensity of certain immune responses caused by both genetic and environmental processes. Different body fluids such as cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), serum, urine, and tears have been used to identify useful biomarkers. Autoimmune neurological diseases associated with pathology of cell surface structures such as myasthenia gravis, Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome, neuromyotonia, stiff person syndrome, limbic encephalitis,

Acrolein-mediated injury in nervous system trauma and diseases.

Acrolein, an α,β-unsaturated aldehyde, is a ubiquitous pollutant that is also produced endogenously through lipid peroxidation. This compound is hundreds of times more reactive than other aldehydes such as 4-hydroxynonenal, is produced at much higher concentrations, and persists in solution for much longer than better known free radicals. It has been implicated in disease states known to involve chronic oxidative stress, particularly spinal cord injury and multiple sclerosis. Acrolein may overwhelm the anti-oxidative systems of any cell by depleting glutathione reserves, preventing glutathione

[Angiitis of the central nervous system in systemic diseases].

PURPOSE: This review is aimed at presenting classification and diagnosis criteria of isolated central nervous system (CNS) angiitis, and at proposing guidelines for diagnosis and management of this disease. CURRENT KNOWLEDGE AND KEY POINTS: Isolated CNS angiitis are rare and most information has been provided by studies of very small series. Angiitis can be primitive or secondary to infectious, neoplastic diseases, or toxics. Clinical manifestations and radiologic abnormalities are not specific. A brain biopsy is therefore often required to confirm the diagnosis, as numerous non-inflammatory

Inflammatory diseases of the central nervous system in dogs.

Inflammatory diseases of the central nervous system (CNS) are important causes of seizures in dogs. Specific diseases include canine distemper, rabies, cryptococcosis, coccidioidomycosis, toxoplasmosis, neosporosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, ehrlichiosis, granulomatous meningoencephalomyelitis, and pug dog encephalitis. Inflammatory disorders should be considered when a dog with seizures has persistent neurological deficits, suffers an onset of seizures at less than 1 or greater than 5 years of age, or exhibits signs of systemic illness. A thorough history, examination, and analysis of cer

[Central nervous system infections in patients with malignant diseases].

Infections of the nervous system remain a significant source of morbidity and mortality in patients with cancer. This paper reviews the main pathogens and emphasizes some of the principles of diagnosis and management of nervous system infections in cancer patients. Due to immunosuppression, diagnosis is more difficult in this group, secondary to the multitude of potential pathogens, and often by their atypical presentations. Fever or headache are often the only symptoms. Clinical history and general examination should guide appropriate studies such as neuroimaging. CSF analysis, cultures, and

[Treatable diseases of the nervous system with cataract formation].

The detection of a cataract in combination with a neurological deficit may provide the physician with important diagnostic help. But a minority of underlying diseases (angiokeratoma corporis diffusum, cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis, diabetes mellitus, galactosemia, hypocalcemia, Refsum's disease, Wilson's disease; Charles Bonnet syndrome; relapsing Perichondritis; adverse effects of medication and intoxications) can be treated causally. Therefore they are summed up and discussed in this paper.

[Periodic discharges and diagnosis of central nervous system diseases].

Periodic discharges are easily identified on conventional EEG traces. Proper interpretation requires systemic analysis of their spatial, temporal and morphological characteristics. These EEG changes are always abnormal and can be observed in various CNS diseases. Periodic discharges were found in 127 patients from a total number of 3212 patients suffering from 9 different CNS diseases. This study confirms the high incidence of periodic discharges in subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (89%), in acute necrotizing encephalitis (85%) and in Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (75%). Their prognostic value

[Diseases of the central nervous system and cardiac arrhythmias].

Diseases of the central nervous system can result in various cardiac arrhythmias. In some neuromuscular disorders, a distinctive morphologic correlate of such arrhythmias can be found as a secondary cardiomyopathy. In other intracranial diseases, in particular subarachnoid and intracerebral hemorrhages, the lack of gross alterations of cardiac morphology suggests some "functional" nature of rhythm disturbances. Lesions of the autonomic regulatory centres frequently cause (unilateral) autonomic imbalance that is projected to the heart according to its asymmetric peripheral sympathetic innervati
