Spinal cord complications are rarely encountered in elective pediatric surgery. We present a patient who became paraplegic after resection of a chest wall tumor. After neoadjuvant radio- and chemotherapy, a 10-year-old girl with primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) of the right chest underwent a right chest wall resection. Ribs #3, 4, 5, and 6 were resected en masse with a pulmonary wedge resection of right upper and middle lobes. To obtain clear margins, the ribs were disarticulated from the vertebral column. Significant bleeding arose when the fourth rib was detached. Presuming an intercos

We report a case of Ewing sarcoma/peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor (ES/pPNET) arising in the vulva in a 17-year-old adolescent girl. Primary extraskeletal ES/pPNET is uncommon and only rarely affects the female genital tract. Characteristic histologic features of ES/pPNET were present in this case including a monomorphic population of small round blue cells with cytoplasmic glycogen confirmed by periodic acid-Schiff and were immunohistochemically positive for CD99 in a membranous and Fli-1 in a nuclear pattern. The presence of an EWS/Fli-1 fusion transcript was demonstrated by revers

A case of primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) that developed as a breast lump in a 47-year-old Japanese woman is reported. After fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytology, a mastectomy was performed. The surgical specimen was a well-circumscribed tumor, 21 x 18 x 18 mm, localized in the breast. The tumor cells were small and round with scant cytoplasm, and proliferated in sheets or solid nests. No intraductal carcinoma component was present. The tumor cells were immunohistochemically positive for neural cell adhesion molecule (CD56), neuron-specific enolase and synaptophysin, and they showed me

CASE REPORT: A six-year-old boy presented with proptosis of the right eye. Imaging studies detected a mass in the medial wall of the right orbit. This mass was biopsied revealing a histopathologic diagnosis of primitive neuroectodermal tumor, so chemotherapy treatment was given. After seven years in remission he presented with a recurrence of the orbital tumor and was found to also have systemic metastases. Treatment with chemotherapy, radiotherapy and orbital exenteration was unsuccessful.
DISCUSSION: The orbital occurrence of these tumors is extremely rare. Differentiation from other small

A case of extracerebellar lipomatous primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) with glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) areas is reported. A 44-year-old woman who had been on antipsychotic agents for schizophrenia complained of hemiparesis and drowsiness. She deteriorated progressively and died 3 months later. The autopsy revealed a huge, ill-defined tumor located from right basal ganglia to brain stem. Microscopically, the tumor consisted of three distinct components: clusters of small primitive cells consistent with PNET, mature lipoma-like islands, and a GBM-like component. Neuronal differentiation

Bifocal pineal and suprasellar tumors have only been described in the context of germ cell tumors in the pediatric age group. We report 2 patients with radiologic findings of bifocal pineal and suprasellar lesions, with a histologic diagnosis of supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumor. The absence of diabetes insipidus and other endocrine abnormalities was noteworthy in both cases. This observation challenges previous reports on the pathognomonic value of this clinico-radiologic entity.

BACKGROUND: The primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNETs) are a family of highly malignant tumors with a multidirectional differential potential. The tumors are characterized by aggressive small round tumor cells that originate from the spinal cord of the central and sympathetic nervous systems. Cases involving the pericardium are extremely rare. Herein, we present a case of peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor (pPNET) that originated in the pericardium.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 23-year-old woman presented with cough and progressive dyspnea for 1 month, followed by eyelid and facial edema fo

A 25-year-old male presented with difficulty in walking, loss of vision, and seizures. A clinical possibility of craniospinal meningeal pathology was considered. On computed tomography (CT) scan and magnetic resonance imaging, there was an enhancement of leptomeninges with few ring-enhancing lesions in both frontal lobes and right frontoparietal region. He was evaluated for low backache and occipital headache 2½ years earlier and was found to have communicating hydrocephalus on CT scan. He underwent ventriculoperitoneal shunt and was followed up with CT scans. Meningeal biopsy was done in the

Primary Ewing sarcoma or primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) of the adrenal gland is extremely rare. We report a case of Ewing sarcoma or PNET of the adrenal in a 48-year-old Chinese woman. The patient was hospitalized with left upper quadrant abdominal pain and swelling that had been present for 1 year. Computed tomography (CT) images revealed a circumscribed mass in the left adrenal region measuring 12 cm in its greatest dimension, and the mass was surgically resected. Macroscopically, the mass (13 × 10 × 8 cm3 ) in the left adrenal gland was encapsulated, soft, appearing grayish white an

A 24-year-old female patient presented with complaints of nausea, vomiting and of loss of consciousness lasted for 15 minutes with left sided weakness. Neuroradiological evaluation revealed a hemorrhagic mass lesion in the right frontal lobe. The patient was operated and intraoperative findings showed a cortical-subcortical hematoma including hemorrhagic and disrupted tissue with a pathologic purple tissue on the periphery of the hematoma. Postoperative course was uneventful and postoperative histopathological examination revealed primitive neuroectodermal tumor. The patient was then referred

Medulloblastoma and central nervous system (CNS) primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) are primary pediatric brain tumors that require multidisciplinary therapies. Although often treated similarly in clinical trials, they are biologically different diseases. Even within medulloblastomas and CNS PNETs, there are molecularly distinct subgroups with differing presentations and prognoses. Overall, prognosis is better for medulloblastomas. Specific treatments for these types of cancer are continuously evolving to maximize survival and minimize long-term sequelae of treatment. Patients should be tr

We describe herein a rare case of a primary primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) in the mediastinum of a 75-year-old man. Grossly, the tumor was located in the left upper anterior mediastinum. Transcutaneous fine-needle biopsy (TCNB) revealed small round-cell proliferation. The expression immunohistochemical analysis was confirmed the diagnosis of PNET. He was successfully treated with chemotherapy and is alive with no sign of recurrence for 17 months after the diagnosis.

A 6-year-old intact female Pointer dog was presented for evaluation of acute onset of ataxia, circling, and head tilt. Neurologic assessment revealed overall decreased postural reaction, left-sided hemiparesis with incoordination, rigidity of fore- and hindlimbs, strabismus of the right eye, and bilateral horizontal nystagmus. Using magnetic resonance imaging, a mass lesion was identified in the cerebrum adjacent to the left side of the cerebellum compressing the brain stem ventrally. The mass was incompletely resected, and during surgery fine-needle aspiration and biopsy of the mass were perf

INTRODUCTION: Ewing's sarcoma/peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor (ES-PNET) is a high-grade malignant neoplasm that often develops in the skeletal system. Primary extraskeletal ES-PNET is an uncommon condition that rarely affects the female genital tract. Tumors in the ovary, cervix, and uterine corpus and vulva are occasionally reported. Reports on the Ewing family of tumors involving the vulva are extremely rare in the relevant literature. Only a few cases of vulvar ES-PNET have so far been reported.

A 16-year-old student presented with a 4-week history of progressive shortness of breath, loss of appetite, and occasional blood-tinged sputum. The chest X-ray revealed massive right-sided pleural effusion with cardiomegaly. An echocardiogram revealed a large pericardial mass with massive pericardial effusion. Subsequent computed tomography of the thorax revealed a large heterogeneous mass in the right lung with extension into the pericardium. Lung biopsy revealed primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) with small round blue cells, Homer-Wright rosettes, and CD99 positivity. We discuss pericard

The case of an 18-year-old primipara in the second trimester of pregnancy affected by a primitive supratentorial mass is described. Main symptoms of increased intracranial pressure were severe headache, diplopia, and left hemiparesis. In the 20(th) week of pregnancy a fronto-temporal craniotomy was performed with complete excision of the tumor. Immunohistochemical analysis showed a primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET). Three months after being discharged, the patient still presented headache and apathy, and a magnetic resonance imaging scan again showed the presence of a temporal lesion; the

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article is to present the radiological findings of peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumors that arise in the retroperitoneum.
CONCLUSION: Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNETs) arising in the retroperitoneum tend to be large and aggressive. Although the imaging appearance of peripheral PNETs is nonspecific, these tumors should be considered in the differential diagnosis when one encounters a large retroperitoneal mass with aggressive features.

Supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumors (SPNETs) and medulloblastomas (MBs) are histologically similar intracranial tumors found in different anatomic locations of the brain. Our group has previously demonstrated that loss of chromosome 8p is a frequent event in MBs. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether DLC-1, a newly identified tumor-suppressor gene on chromosome 8p22, is involved in the tumorigenesis of MBs and the histologically similar SPNETs. We first assessed for alterations of gene expression in microdissected tumors and detected lack of DLC-1 transcript in 1 of 9 MBs (

An 88-year-old woman presented with a supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) manifesting as disturbance of consciousness and left hemiplegia. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a large mass lesion in the right frontotemporal region. She underwent biopsy of the lesion that confirmed the diagnosis of PNET. Her poor condition only allowed chemotherapy with methyl 6-[3-(2-chloroethyl)-3-nitrosoureido]-6-deoxy-alpha-D-glucopyranoside (MCNU), vincristine, and prednisolone to be performed. The patient died approximately 6 months after diagnosis due to enlargement of the tumor. Supratent
