[Cerebrospinal fluid signalization in chronic inflammatory diseases of the central nervous system].

Dynamics of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) cyto-proteic dual obeys to different models when central nervous system (CNS) inflammatory diseases are considered. In order to evaluate these models data pertinent to multiple sclerosis (20 cases), neurosyphilis (20 cases), neurocysticercosis (20 cases), subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (20 cases), neuroschistosomiasis (18 cases) and neuro-cryptococcosis (20 cases) are compared in report to a control group: chronic vascular headache (50 cases). CSF data on cytology and proteins were considered. Cytology was evaluated as to the total cell count (cumm);

Cerebral schistosomiasis: MRI features with pathological correlation.

BACKGROUND: Neuroschistosomiasis is not commonly encountered and is probably underrecognized. We hope these findings can help clinicians and radiologists to raise awareness of this disabling disorder. PURPOSE: To demonstrate the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of cerebral schistosomiasis and correlate it with pathological findings. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We identified seven patients with cerebral schistosomiasis from radiology and pathology archives of our hospital. Of the seven patients, six were pathologically confirmed. The remaining patient had pathologically confirmed spinal sc

Antibodies to Schistosoma mansoni in human cerebrospinal fluid.

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum samples from patients suspected of having neuroschistosomiasis (NS) were evaluated by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Monoclonal antibodies of various immunoglobulin isotypes (IgM, IgA, IgE, total IgG, IgG1, IgG2, IgG3, and IgG4) were used to detect antibodies against Schistosoma mansoni soluble egg antigen (SEA) and soluble worm adult preparation (SWAP). Of the 83 CSF samples tested, 55% were reactive to SEA (26% were reactive only to SEA and 29% to both SEA and SWAP), 34% were reactive to SWAP (5% only to SWAP and 29% to both SEA and SWAP), and 40% w

The relation between involvement of the central nervous system in schistosomiasis mansoni and the clinical forms of the parasitosis. A review.

A review of the available literature on the involvement of the central nervous system (CNS) in schistosomiasis mansoni was undertaken to assess the schistosomal lesions in the spinal cord and brain and the clinical forms of the disease that are associated with these lesions. In almost all clinically symptomatic cases of neuroschistosomiasis mansoni (NSM), involvement of the CNS starts in the early stages of infection (non-toxaemic form), during evolution of the disease to its chronic forms, or concomitantly with the (oligo or asymptomatic) chronic intestinal and hepatointestinal forms. In-situ

[Myeloradiculitis due to Schistosoma haematobium: about an observation in Dakar (Senegal)].

Nervous localisations of schistosomiasis are rare. We report the case of a 25 year-old Senegalese patient admitted for a progressive myeloradiculitis onset, over a one week period. The diagnosis of Schistosoma haematobium myeloradiculitis was made in front of a positive serum serology for S. haematobium, presence of S. haematobium eggs in urine, hyperproteinorachia, endemicity of S. haematobium in the region where the patient was originating and a past medical history of macroscopic hematuria in a context of river bathing. There was also no arguments for another cause to these neurological man

Simultaneous occurrence of brain tumor and myeloradiculopathy in schistosomiasis mansoni: case report.

Simultaneous occurrence of brain tumor and myeloradiculopathy in cases of Manson's schistosomiasis have only rarely been described. We report the case of a 38-year-old man who developed seizures during a trip to Puerto Rico and in whom a brain tumor was diagnosed by magnetic resonance imaging: brain biopsy revealed the diagnosis of schistosomiasis. He was transferred to a hospital in the United States and, during hospitalization, he developed sudden paraplegia. The diagnosis of myeloradiculopathy was confirmed at that time. He was administered praziquantel and steroids. The brain tumor disappe

Clinics in diagnostic imaging (52). Spinal cord schistosomiasis.

A 2-year-old Brazilian boy presented with bilateral leg weakness and constipation, followed by development of progressive paraparesis and bladder dysfunction. Neurological examination revealed flaccid paraparesis. Blood tests and CSF analysis showed eosinophilia. The MR examination revealed a spinal cord mass extending from T9 to L1 levels, with a heterogeneously-enhancing solid component and a cystic component. Stool tests for Schistosoma mansoni eggs were positive. The patient underwent surgery, the intramedullary mass was partially resected, and the diagnosis of spinal cord infection by Sch

Atypical presentation of cerebral schistosomiasis four years after exposure to Schistosoma mansoni.

Schistosomiasis is the second most socioeconomically devastating parasitic disease worldwide, affecting over 240 million people in 77 countries on 5 continents and killing 300,000 people annually in sub-Saharan Africa alone. Neuroschistosomiasis is caused by granuloma formation around eggs that lodge in the CNS, with Schistosoma mansoni and Schistosoma haematobium usually affecting the spinal cord and Schistosoma japonicum causing most reported cerebral disease. We report a case of a previously healthy 25-year-old woman native to the United States who presented with a single generalized tonic-

Global research priorities for infections that affect the nervous system.

Infections that cause significant nervous system morbidity globally include viral (for example, HIV, rabies, Japanese encephalitis virus, herpes simplex virus, varicella zoster virus, cytomegalovirus, dengue virus and chikungunya virus), bacterial (for example, tuberculosis, syphilis, bacterial meningitis and sepsis), fungal (for example, cryptococcal meningitis) and parasitic (for example, malaria, neurocysticercosis, neuroschistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminths) infections. The neurological, cognitive, behavioural or mental health problems caused by the infections probably affect mill

Helminth infections of the central nervous system occurring in Southeast Asia and the Far East.

Although helminth infections of the central nervous system (CNS) are rare, their public health implications must not be neglected. Indeed, several helminth species can cause cerebrospinal infections, especially if humans serve as intermediate or non-permissive host. The diagnosis of cerebrospinal helminthiases is difficult, and the detection of parasites in cerebrospinal fluid is rarely successful. Cerebrospinal helminth infections therefore often remain undetected, and hence prognosis is poor. Increases in tourism and population movements are risk factors for cerebrospinal helminthiases and i

[The tumoral form of cerebellar schistosomiasis: case report and measure of granulomas].

An unusual case of the tumoral form of cerebellar Schistosomiasis mansoni, in a 15 year-old male diagnosed by biopsy, with neurological signs and symptoms 60 days prior to surgery. Computerized tomography show a hyperdense expanding lesion located in cerebellum, suggesting glioma. Histopathological examination showed numerous S. mansoni ova involved by granulomatous inflammation in necrotic-exudative phase, located mainly in the internal, granular layer of the cerebellum, creating a pseudotumor in the cerebellar vermis and a recent hemorrhage in the trunk. The areas of granulomas were measured

SCHISTOSOMAL MYELORADICULOPATHY IN A NON-ENDEMIC AREA.

OBJECTIVE: To report a schistosomal myeloradiculopathy case in a non-endemic area. CASE DESCRIPTION: A previously healthy 11-year-old boy, stricken by an acute loss of strength on his lower limbs, followed by a loss of strength on his upper limbs and upper body, associated with altered sensitivity of the vesical globe formation. The patient's cerebrospinal fluid analysis showed eosinophilic meningitis, in addition to peripheral eosinophilia. The investigation resulted in a positive serology for Schistosoma mansoni. The treatment included steroids and praziquantel 60mg/kg, with a new dose afte

Development of an experimental model of schistosomal myeloradiculopathy.

Schistosomal myeloradiculopathy (SMR) is a severe form of presentation of schistosomiasis in which Schistosoma spp. affect the spinal cord. The aims of the present study were to develop an animal model of SMR caused by S. mansoni, to characterize both sensory and motor abnormalities in the infected animals, and to investigate the relationship of the sensory, motor and histological findings with the progression of the infection over time. Mechanical sensitivity and behavioral tests were performed followed by euthanasia in male Wistar rats divided into six groups of five animals each, on days 5,

[Radiculomyelopathy in schistosomiasis].

The increasing migration of people from their homeland in far distant regions to Europe in the last few years has strongly influenced the rise of previously rarely seen diseases. They not only originate from the respective homeland but also from the transit countries during the migration process. We report the case of a 27-year-old male migrant from Eritrea, who after months of flight as a refugee travelling through various African countries, presented at our hospital with a progressive, painful radiculopathy. Whole spine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a focus located in the myelon, e
