Meeting of Minds around Food Addiction: Insights from Addiction Medicine, Nutrition, Psychology, and Neurosciences.

This review, focused on food addiction (FA), considers opinions from specialists with different expertise in addiction medicine, nutrition, health psychology, and behavioral neurosciences. The concept of FA is a recurring issue in the clinical description of abnormal eating. Even though some tools have been developed to diagnose FA, such as the Yale Food Addiction Scale (YFAS) questionnaire, the FA concept is not recognized as an eating disorder (ED) so far and is even not mentioned in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manuel of Mental Disorders version 5 (DSM-5) or the International Classificati

Wagner of the neurosciences? Charcot's theater and his circle's influence on the performing arts.

In this article, I gloss and bring together two narratives from the cultural history of neuropsychology. First, I explore the theatrical aspects of the practice of the founder of French neurology, Jean-Martin Charcot (1825-1893), characterizing his lecture style and diagnostic practice as a dramaturgical or choreological method. Charcot and his peers depicted the neuropathological body as a sensorial assemblage whose expressions and inputs could be charted across the dimensions of time and space, each body acting within an often determinative mise en scène, as in a theater. This echoed Richard

The contribution of small animal positron emission tomography to the neurosciences--a critical evaluation.

This article presents an overview of those animal studies which so far have been performed with dedicated small animal positron emission tomographs in the field of the neurosciences. In vivo investigations focus on energy metabolism, perfusion and receptor/transporter binding in rat models of reinforcement, learning and memory, traumatic brain injury, epilepsy, depression, cardiovascular diseases--such as ischemia and focal stroke--and neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and Huntington's disease. In the majority of studies, important novel aspects arise from the fact t

An integrative theory of attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder based on the cognitive and affective neurosciences.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a behavioral syndrome that arises in early childhood, often co-occurs with conduct disorder and leads, developmentally, to antisocial behavior and substance abuse. Models from cognitive and affective neuroscience have been invoked in an effort to understand the development of ADHD, leading to a broad array of interrelated theories and hypothesized mechanisms. In this paper, we highlight core mechanisms that may cut across several theories and constructs, and thus provide some leverage for further study and conceptualization from a neuroscience

Cerebellar imaging for neuroscience at 9.4 T.

PURPOSE: This study explored the possibility of visualizing cerebellar structure and function in vivo with a 9.4 T protocol suitable for neuroscientific experiments. METHODS: Six healthy individuals were scanned with a 9.4 T acquisition protocol including functional runs using BOLD-weighted 3D EPI at 0.8 and 1.0 mm isotropic resolution, and a 0.4 mm MP2RAGE covering the entire cerebellum to derive cerebellar cortical surfaces. RESULTS: Scan sessions took approximately 1 h, a duration generally well tolerated in (cognitive) neuroscience experiments. A generalized B1 shim over the cerebellum p

The neuroscience of cancer: Focus on neuropeptidergic systems.

Tumors are complex, highly heterogeneous diseases that place an enormous burden on the world's healthcare systems. Updating understanding of tumor initiation and progression is critical and the current breakthrough lies in cancer neuroscience, which focuses on the crosstalk between neural components and tumors. Neuropeptides are a class of highly potent peptides, that perform the physiological functions of neurotransmitters, neuromodulators, and endocrine hormones. Currently, many studies have shown that many cellular components of the tumor microenvironment express neuropeptides and their rec

Pain Neuroscience Education for Acute Pain.

UNLABELLED: In musculoskeletal and sports medicine, pain has traditionally been linked to tissue injury, often assuming a linear correlation between tissue damage and pain intensity. However, modern pain science has illuminated the complexity of the human pain experience, incorporating psychosocial elements, nervous system sensitization, immune responses, and structural changes in the brain as factors. This contemporary understanding of pain has proven highly beneficial for both clinicians treating individuals in pain and those experiencing pain. Pain neuroscience education (PNE) provides indi

[Neuroscience of creativity or can the ungraspable be captured?].

Creativity is a particularly complex entity that can be best conceptualized along dimensions of opposite polarities. It can simultaneously be considered as a phenomenon that comprises a multitude of processes but also be interpreted as a complex construct which indeed does not have a uniformly accepted definition despite extensive literature on creativity. Creativity researchers of various approaches offer alongside methodological diversity a vast array of paradigms and definitions, leading, on the other hand, to contradictions of results. Nevertheless, the concept of creativity is to be maint

DARK Classics in Chemical Neuroscience: Methaqualone.

Commonly known as "Quaaludes," methaqualone (1) is a sedative-hypnotic medication, with effects resembling barbiturates and other downers, that exerts its effects through modulation of γ-aminobutyric acid type A receptors (GABAAR). Following the discovery of the sedative and euphoric effects of methaqualone (1), it was quickly adopted by pharmaceutical companies and promoted by clinicians around the world as a "safe" sleeping pill option, and for a period it was available over the counter. The popularity of methaqualone (1) soared worldwide, and many people began to use it recreationally for i

DARK Classics in Chemical Neuroscience: Loperamide.

Loperamide, a popular and inexpensive over-the-counter antidiarrheal medicine, is a potent μ-opioid receptor agonist approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It has been on the market since 1976 and is relatively safe with no central nervous system-related side effects when used for a short period of time at the recommended therapeutic dose (2-8 mg/day). In recent years, loperamide has become notoriously known as the "poor man's methadone" for people with substance dependence due to the increase in loperamide overdoses from self-administered medication to treat opioid withdrawa

DARK Classics in Chemical Neuroscience: Bucinnazine.

Bucinnazine (1-butyryl-4-cinnamylpiperazine) is a synthetic opioid recently discovered in heroin seized samples in the U.S and in Europe. It was first synthesized in the late 1960s and has been used for the treatment of cancer-associated chronic pain in China for many years. Bucinnazine is one of the most potent compounds among the series of piperazines, which also include other relevant compounds, such as MT-45, AD-1211, and 2-methyl-AP-237, a methylated derivative of bucinnazine. Bucinnazine is considered a μ-selective opioid, binding primarily to the μ-opioid receptor. However, bucinnazine

The Behavioral Neuroscience of Traumatic Brain Injury.

Traumatic brain injury is a calamity of various causes, pathologies, and extremely varied and often complex clinical presentations. Because of its predilection for brain systems underlying cognitive and complex behavioral operations, it may cause chronic and severe psychiatric illness that requires expert management. This is more so for the modern epidemic of athletic and military brain injuries which are dominated by psychiatric symptoms. Past medical, including psychiatric, history, and comorbidities are important and relevant for formulation and management. Traumatic brain injury is a model

DARK Classics in Chemical Neuroscience: Krokodil.

Krokodil is the street name for a homemade mixture that has been used as a cheap substitute for heroin. The main active substance in krokodil is desomorphine, an opioid that is 10 times more potent than morphine. Krokodil use began in Russia and Ukraine but has spread throughout several countries in Europe and North America. Krokodil is produced from codeine tablets in a bootleg reaction performed under clandestine and unsanitary conditions. The toxicity of krokodil is characterized by devastating symptoms that start as black ulcers at the injection site and evolve to gangrene and limb amputat

DARK Classics in Chemical Neuroscience: Psilocybin.

Psilocybin is found in a family of mushrooms commonly known as "magic mushrooms" that have been used throughout history to induce hallucinations. In the late 1950s Albert Hofmann, of Sandoz Laboratories, identified and synthesized the psychoactive compounds psilocybin and psilocin which are found in psilocybe mushrooms. Psilocybin was marketed by Sandoz as Indocybin for basic psychopharmacological and therapeutic clinical research. Psilocybin saw a rapid rise in popularity during the 1960s and was classed as a Schedule I drug in 1970. This led to a significant decrease in psilocybin research.
