[Paid blood donors: a new risk group for the development of AIDS in Mexico].

We analyzed the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of seven patients with AIDS who were infected through contaminated needles or blood letting equipment; no other risk factor was identified in these patients. In the Dirección de Epidemiología de los Servicios Coordinados de la Salud in the state of Puebla, 37 cases of AIDS were registered up to June 15, 1988. Nineteen percent of these were paid donors between the ages of 26 and 45. There were five males and two females. All of them had weight loss, fever, chronic diarrhea and adenomegaly. Six had respiratory complaints, four candidia

Imported Toxin-Producing Cutaneous Diphtheria - Minnesota, Washington, and New Mexico, 2015-2018.

From September 2015 to March 2018, CDC confirmed four cases of cutaneous diphtheria caused by toxin-producing Corynebacterium diphtheriae in patients from Minnesota (two), Washington (one), and New Mexico (one). All patients had recently returned to the United States after travel to countries where diphtheria is endemic. C. diphtheriae infection was not clinically suspected in any of the patients; treating institutions detected the organism through matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF) testing of wound-derived coryneform isolates. MALDI-TOF is

Child abuse-related homicides in New Mexico: a 6-year retrospective review.

We retrospectively reviewed autopsy records at a statewide medical examiner's office in order to identify and characterize deaths due to child abuse. In a 6-year period in New Mexico, the medical examiner investigated 45 deaths determined to be child abuse-related. Decedents were predominantly male (68.9%), Hispanic White (53.3%), and all were 5 years of age or younger, with a median age of 1 year. Head injuries were the most common cause of death (44.4%), followed by battered baby syndrome (15.6%). Relatives were involved as alleged perpetrators in 80% of the cases, with the father most often

Addressing physician shortages in New Mexico through a combined BA/MD program.

The University of New Mexico School of Medicine and College of Arts and Sciences developed its combined BA/MD degree program, which will increase the medical school class from 75 students to 100 in the fall of 2010, to address the critical issue of physician shortages in underserved New Mexico. The program, which began operation at the undergraduate (i.e., college) level in 2006, expands opportunities in medical education for New Mexico students, especially those from rural and underserved minority communities, and prepares them to practice in underserved areas of New Mexico. In the BA/MD prog

Alcohol and suicide death among American Indians of New Mexico: 1980-1998.

The relationship between alcohol use prior to suicide was explored among American Indian decedents in New Mexico for the years 1980 through 1998. The suicide data were collected from New Mexico Vital Statistics and toxicology reports from the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator and matched on a case-by-case basis. Detailed analyses were undertaken for all cases of resident New Mexico Indians from the Navajo, Pueblo, and Apache cultures. Alcohol was detected in 69% of all suicides of American Indians with some variance by major tribal cultural groups (range = 62.1% to 84.4%). This is

Wound Botulism Among Persons Who Inject Black Tar Heroin in New Mexico, 2016.

Outbreaks of wound botulism are rare, but clinicians and health departments should maintain suspicion for signs, symptoms, and risk factors of wound botulism among persons who inject drugs in order to initiate treatment quickly. This report describes an outbreak of three wound botulism cases among persons in two adjacent counties who injected drugs. Provisional information about these cases was previously published in the CDC National Botulism Surveillance Summary. All three cases in this outbreak were laboratory-confirmed, including one case with detection of botulinum toxin type A in a wound

Greater Odds for Angina in Uranium Miners Than Nonuranium Miners in New Mexico.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that uranium miners in New Mexico (NM) have a greater prevalence of cardiovascular disease than miners who extracted the nonuranium ore. METHODS: NM-based current and former uranium miners were compared with nonuranium miners by using cross-sectional standardized questionnaire data from the Mining Dust in the United States (MiDUS) study from 1989 to 2016. RESULTS: Of the 7215 eligible miners, most were men (96.3%). Uranium miners (n = 3151, 43.7%) were older and diabetic, but less likely to currently smoke or use snuff (P ≤ 0.001 fo

Paracoccidioidomycosis in Mexico: clinical and epidemiological data from 93 new cases (1972-2012).

Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) is an endemic systemic infection in several countries of Latin America. The few registered cases in Mexico most likely do not reflect the real frequency. Disseminate the epidemiological and clinical data of unreported cases of PCM in Mexico from 1972 until 2012 is the aim of this work. Epidemiological and clinical information of non-published cases of PCM was requested from the principal mycological diagnosis centres in Mexico. A total of 93 cases were received. The infection was found predominantly in men (95.7%), peasants (88.5%) and individual between 31 and 60

Male injection drug users try new drugs following U.S. deportation to Tijuana, Mexico.

BACKGROUND: Among male injection drug users (IDUs) in Tijuana, Mexico, U.S. deportation is associated with HIV transmission. Changing drug use behaviors following deportation, including the use of new drugs, may increase HIV risk but are understudied. We identify correlates of trying new drugs following male IDUs' most recent U.S. deportation to Mexico. METHODS: In 2010, we recruited 328 deported male IDUs in Tijuana, Mexico. Questionnaires collected retrospective data on drug use and other HIV risk behaviors throughout migratory events. Logistic regression identified correlates of trying new

Outbreak of erythema nodosum of unknown cause - New Mexico, November 2007-January 2008.

Erythema nodosum (EN) is a form of panniculitis, which has been associated with several infectious and noninfectious etiologies. EN clusters have been associated with outbreaks of Coccidioides immitis, Histoplasma capsulatum, and Yersinia pseudotuberculosis infections. In December 2007, a physician in a rural New Mexico community of approximately 10,000 persons reported to the New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) that 13 patients had been diagnosed with EN since mid-November. No EN outbreak had ever been detected in this community, and since 2006, only one diagnosis of EN had been made at t

Dynamics of plague in a Gunnison's prairie dog colony complex from New Mexico.

A plague (Yersinia pestis) epizootic spread through Gunnison's prairie dogs (Cynomys gunnisoni), and possibly other rodent species, in the Moreno Valley in north-central New Mexico between winter 1984-1985 and autumn 1987. We observed the progress of the epizootic and subsequent population recovery at four prairie dog towns within the valley during this period. At two towns (Midlake and Val Verde) the prairie dogs were marked prior to the epizootic. At two additional towns (Vega and South Entrance) prairie dogs were marked following the epizootic. In 1988, a second epizootic occurred at Vega.

Molecular detection of Paragonimus mexicanus in freshwater crabs: new records in Oaxaca, Mexico.

Paragonimiasis is a zoonotic disease caused by lung flukes of the genus Paragonimus, which use freshwater snails and crustaceans as intermediate hosts and mammals as definitive hosts. Despite its public health importance, few studies have documented the distribution of this parasite in tropical regions of Mexico. In April 2024, a total of 180 freshwater crabs of the genus Pseudothelphusa were collected from five localities in Oaxaca State, Mexico. Metacercariae were observed in 47.2% of the crabs examined, with the highest mean intensity (18.46 cysts per crab) recorded in San Pedro Molinos loc

Skin Cancer Recognition and Education Among Community Health Workers in Southern New Mexico.

NM averages 450 new cases of melanoma annually. Promotoras are community health workers in NM that provide health education and resources to the community. The project aims to determine if promotora education can improve the recognition of suspicious lesions, encouraging community members to seek care. Current literature focuses on the self-reported confidence of CHWs in recognizing skin cancer. A total of 54 promotoras were sampled through a Qualtrics quiz asking whether skin lesion photos are suspicious. Participants were also asked to rate their confidence in recognizing a suspicious skin l

Wolbachia pipientis occurs in Aedes aegypti populations in New Mexico and Florida, USA.

The mosquitoes Aedes aegypti (L.) and Ae. albopictus Skuse are the major vectors of dengue, Zika, yellow fever, and chikungunya viruses worldwide. Wolbachia, an endosymbiotic bacterium present in many insects, is being utilized in novel vector control strategies to manipulate mosquito life history and vector competence to curb virus transmission. Earlier studies have found that Wolbachia is commonly detected in Ae. albopictus but rarely detected in Ae. aegypti. In this study, we used a two-step PCR assay to detect Wolbachia in wild-collected samples of Ae. aegypti. The PCR products were sequen
