Exercise training is employed as supplementary therapeutic intervention for heart failure, due to its ability to induce physiological cardiac hypertrophy. In parallel, supplementation with Nigella sativa (N. sativa) was found to enhance myocardial function and induce cardiac hypertrophy. In this study, we aim to compare the morphological and electrophysiological changes associated with these patterns of cardiac hypertrophy and the possible changes upon administration of N. sativa to exercise-trained animals. Fifty-six adult Wistar rats were divided into: control, Nigella-treated (N), exercise-

Exercise training is employed as supplementary therapy to patients with heart failure due to its multiple beneficial cardiac effects including physiological remodeling of the heart. However, precautions might be taken for the concomitant high oxidant release. Nigella sativa (NS) has been found to induce cardiac hypertrophy and enhance cardiac function. Combination of NS supplementation and exercise training might induce a safer model of cardiac hypertrophy. Our aim was to study biomarkers associated with cardiac hypertrophy induced by NS supplementation of exercise-trained rats. Forty-five adu

INTRODUCTION: Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a systemic autoimmune disorder characterized by persistent synovial inflammation and progressive joint destruction. Conventional therapies, including NSAIDs, corticosteroids, and DMARDs, may cause adverse effects, highlighting the need for safer, multi-targeted agents. This study evaluated the anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic effects of Nigella sativa seed extract in carrageenan- and Complete Freund's Adjuvant (CFA)-induced rat models.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Anti-inflammatory activity was assessed using carrageenan-induced paw edema, while anti-a

OBJECTIVE: Based on the results of previous studies, the effects of N. sativa on some of the non-alcoholic fatty liver disease's (NAFLD) biomarkers were positive; however, there were conflicting results regarding other variables. Therefore, the present systematic review of clinical trials was designed to clarify whether N. sativa effectively prevents the progression of NAFLD.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A search of four databases (Scopus, PubMed, Medline, and Google scholar) was conducted to identify the clinical trials that assessed the effects of N. sativa supplementation on NAFLD. The outcome v

Schistosoma mansoni is one of the parasites causing schistosomiasis, a disease which threatens millions of people all over the world. Traditional chemical drugs are not fully effective against schistosomaisis due to the evolving drug resistant worm strains, so exploring new remedies derived from natural products is a good way to fight schistosomiasis. In the present investigation two natural products, Nigella sativa oil and Chroococcus turgidus extract were used separately or in a combination to explore their effect on S. mansoni. The infected mice treated with Chroococcus turgidus extract or/

AIM/BACKGROUND: Thymoquinone (TQ) is the major active principle of Nigella sativa seed (black seed) and is known to control many fungi, bacteria, and some viruses. However, the activity of TQ against anaerobic bacteria is not well demonstrated. Anaerobic bacteria can cause severe infections, including diarrhea, aspiration pneumonia, and brain abscess, particularly in immunodeficient individuals. The present study aimed to investigate the in vitro antimicrobial activity of TQ against some anaerobic pathogens in comparison to metronidazole.
METHODS: Standard, ATCC, strains of four anaerobic bac

The effects of 4 weeks oral intake of Nigella sativa L. (NS) oil on some liver function tests and D-galactosamine- or carbon tetrachloride-induced hepatotoxicity were investigated in male albino rats. In another series of experiments, the effect of the oil on serum lipid profile was examined in male spontaneously hypertensive rats of stroke prone strain and Wistar Kyoto rats. The study showed that daily administration of the oil per se (800 mg/kg orally for 4 weeks) did not adversely effect the serum transaminases (ALT and AST), alkaline phosphatase, serum bilirubin or prothrombin activity in

Giant genomes, generally dominated by transposable elements (TEs), have evolved repeatedly in angiosperms. The role of TEs in the evolution of giant genomes, however, remains largely unclear. Here, by ancestral genome size reconstruction, whole-genome sequencing, and comparative genomic and transcriptomic analyses, we reveal the processes, drivers, and consequences of genomic gigantism in the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae). We find that the giant diploid genome of Nigella damascena (10.84 Gb, ~35 times that of columbine) has evolved from an ~1.46 Gb ancestral genome by persistent TE accumula

Thymoquinone, a bioactive compound with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, is a major component of Nigella sativa (black cumin) oil, widely used in functional foods and dietary supplements. In this study, we developed a rapid, eco-friendly, and cost-effective voltammetric method for the direct determination of the target analyte in real oil-based food matrices using an unmodified boron-doped diamond electrode. The method requires no chemical pretreatment or extraction and uses only ethanol and water as solvents. Key parameters, including electrolyte pH and square wave voltammetry se

Shiga toxin type 2 (Stx2)-producing Escherichia coli O157H7 has become a global risk to public health. The study aimed to investigate the emergence of antimicrobial resistance patterns in the clinical isolates of E. coli. The isolates revealed a pattern of strong resistance to the majority of the common antibiotics. Most E. coli isolates were susceptible to gentamicin and were classified as MDR. The Stx2 determinant was screened in E. coli O157:H7 isolates through the PCR technique, and the Stx2 was purified by cation exchange and gel filtration chromatography. The purification yielded 5.2 mil

Nigella sativa L. seeds have been traditionally utilized in Chinese folk medicine for centuries to treat vitiligo. This study revealed that the ethanolic extract of Nigella sativa L. (HZC) enhances melanogenesis and mitigates oxidative stress-induced cellular senescence and dysfunction in melanocytes. In accordance with established protocols, the ethanol fraction from Nigella sativa L. seeds was extracted, concentrated, and lyophilized to evaluate its herbal effects via 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assays, tyrosinase activity evaluation, measurement of cel

Nigella sativa (NS) is a native herb consumed habitually in several countries worldwide, possessing manifold therapeutic properties. Among them, anti-inflammatory features have been reported, presumably relating to mechanisms involved in the nuclear factor kappa-B pathway, among others. Given the observed association between neuroimmune factors and mental illness, the primary aim of the present study was to examine the effects of chronic NS use on manic-like behavior in rats, as well as analyze levels of brain inflammatory mediators following NS intake. Using male and female rats, baseline tes

Poisoning from Organophosphates (OPs), especially Dichlorvos (DDVP) has become endemic due to theincreasing use in house hold and agricultural pests control, with most marked effects in the nervous system. However, it isevidenced that natural antioxidants are efficacious against OPs toxicity. Thus, this study investigated the possible antidotalefficacy of Nigella sativa oil (NSO) in Dichlovos (DDVP) induced oxidative and neuronal damages in Wistar rats. DDVPwas administered at sub-chronic daily dosage of 8.8 mg/kg.bw for 7 days and a post-administration of NSO at 1 ml/kg.bwfor the subsequent 7
