Effect of flumetsulam alone and coexistence with polyethylene microplastics on soil microbial carbon and nitrogen cycles: Elucidation of bacterial community structure, functional gene expression, and enzyme activity.

Flumetsulam (FLU) is a new class of broad-spectrum herbicides. With the widespread use of plastic products, polyethylene (PE) microplastics (MPs) may remain in the soil. It is possible for these two novel contaminants to co-exist in the soil environment. In the present study, we used brown soil as the test soil and determined the toxicity of FLU at 0.05, 0.5 and 2.5 mg kg-1 alone and in combination with PE MPs (1%) on soil microorganisms. The obtained results demonstrated that the exposure of FLU and FLU+MPs had an inhibitory effect on the numbers of bacteria and fungi. In addition, FLU and FL

Inhibition effects of long-term calcium-magnesia phosphate fertilizer application on Cd uptake in rice: Regulation of the iron-nitrogen coupling cycle driven by the soil microbial community.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Cadmium (Cd) pollution in paddy soil seriously endangers food safety production. To investigate the effects and microbiological mechanisms of calcium-magnesium-phosphate (CMP) fertilizer application on Cd reduction in rice, field experiments were conducted in Cd-contaminated paddy soil. Compared with conventional compound fertilizer, CMP fertilizer treatments inhibited Cd uptake through plant roots, significantly decreasing Cd content in rice grains from 0.340 to 0.062 mg/kg. Soil pH and total Ca, Mg and P contents increased after CMP fertilizer application, resulting in a further decrease in

Pilot-scale plant study on iron-rich residual sludge driven multi-path efficient nitrogen removal mediated by niche-specific Fe (III)/Fe (II) cycle for sustainable treatment of municipal wastewater.

Excessive fermentation-derived effluent NH4 constrains the sustainable application of the sludge fermentation-driven denitrification (SFD) process. This study introduced iron-rich residual sludge and an iron "feast-famine" strategy into a 38.00 m3 pilot-scale SFD process. After 120 days, the sludge reduction and denitrification efficiencies reached 77.79 % and ∼ 95.00 %, respectively, with a fourfold increase in NH4+ removal. Further analysis revealed that iron limitation stimulated biofilm sludge (BS) to assimilate Fe(III), increasing Feammox contribution by 5.43-fold. The generated Fe(II) sp

Microbial drivers of biogeochemical cycles in deep sediments of the Kathiawar Peninsula Gulfs of India.

Deep marine sediments are rich in microbial diversity, which holds metabolic repertoire to modulate biogeochemical cycles on a global scale. We undertook the environmental microbiome inhabiting the Gulf of Kathiawar Peninsula as a model system to understand the potential involvement of the deep marine sediment microbial community and as a cohort in the carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur biogeochemical cycles. These gulfs are characterized by dynamic tidal variations, diverse sediment textures, and nutrient-rich waters, driven by coastal processes and the interaction between natural coastal dynamics

Holed up, but thriving: Impact of multitrophic cryoconite communities on glacier elemental cycles.

Cryoconite holes (water and sediment-filled depressions), found on glacier surfaces worldwide, serve as reservoirs of microbes, carbon, trace elements, and nutrients, transferring these components downstream via glacier hydrological networks. Through targeted amplicon sequencing of carbon and nitrogen cycling genes, coupled with functional inference-based methods, we explore the functional diversity of these mini-ecosystems within Antarctica and the Himalayas. These regions showcase distinct environmental gradients and experience varying rates of environmental change influenced by global clima

Soil development constrains N availability through regulating N cycling in subtropical karst regions.

Soil development profoundly shapes the physical, chemical, and biological properties of soils, yet its role in regulating nitrogen (N) cycling and shaping ecological succession remains underexplored. This gap is especially critical for large-scale ecological restoration, where similar climatic and geologic backgrounds can yield divergent outcomes. In this study, we investigated how varying degrees of soil development affect soil N availability and plant community succession after 60 years of natural recovery. Field surveys revealed that sites with moderately weathered soils transitioned to woo

Desulfobacterales stimulates nitrate reduction in the mangrove ecosystem of a subtropical gulf.

The amount of nitrogen compounds discharged into the natural environment has increased drastically due to frequent human activities and led to worsening pollution. The mangrove ecosystem can remove nitrogen pollution, in this regard, few studies had focused on the relationship among nitrogen cycling genes, environmental factors, and taxonomic composition. In this study, shotgun metagenomic sequencing and quantitative polymerase chain reaction were used to understand the nitrogen cycle in the subtropical mangrove ecosystem in the Beibu Gulf of China. Eight nitrogen cycling pathways were annotat

Driving force of tidal pulses on denitrifiers-dominated nitrogen oxide emissions from intertidal wetland sediments.

Intertidal wetland sediments are an important source of atmospheric nitrogen oxides (NOx), but their contribution to the global NOx budget remains unclear. In this work, we conducted year-round and diurnal observations in the intertidal wetland of Jiaozhou Bay to explore their regional source-sink patterns and influence factors on NOx emissions (initially in the form of nitric oxide) and used a dynamic soil reactor to further extend the mechanisms underlying the tidal pulse of nitric oxide (NO) observed in our investigations. The annual fluxes of NOx in the vegetated wetland were significantly

Optimization of nitrogen removal in a sequencing batch reactor system by variation of the time distribution.

In this study, we investigated the variations of the nitrogen removal and mass balance of a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) system with the duration of the second anoxic period (the anoxic (II) period); durations of 0, 70, 100, and 130 minutes were tested in one cycle of SBR operation to determine the optimum conditions for the operation of the SBR and increase its nitrogen removal efficiency. The SBR system was operated under the conditions as follows: a sludge retention time (SRT) of 17.5 days, an operation time of 6 hours per cycle, a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 12 hours, an influent C

Chiral herbicide imazethapy influences plant-soil feedback on nitrogen metabolism by shaping rhizosphere microorganisms.

Herbicides are known to affect the soil nitrogen cycle by shaping soil microorganisms. However, it is not clear how herbicides regulate diverse transformation processes of soil nitrogen cycling by altering rhizosphere microorganisms, subsequently influencing the feedback to plant nitrogen metabolism. Here, we investigated how imazethapyr (IM) enantiomers drive plant-soil feedback on nitrogen metabolism by altering the rhizosphere microorganisms. The results indicated that (R)- and (S)-IM significantly changed the composition and structure rhizosphere microbiome with enantioselectivity and func

Metagenomic reconstruction of microbial genomes and biogeochemical pathways: insights into carbon and nitrogen flux dynamics in the eastern Arabian Sea.

The eastern Arabian Sea (EAS) experiences seasonal nutrient availability and productivity shifts driven by the Indian monsoon, influencing microbial contributions to biogeochemical cycles. This study explores carbon, nitrogen and sulfur cycling using metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) from water samples collected at chlorophyll maxima (C-Max) depths during non-monsoon and monsoon seasons. A total of 49 high-quality MAGs were reconstructed from 12 metagenomic samples, including four novel lineages from the phyla Pseudomonadota and Bacteroidota. These MAGs revealed distinct seasonal shifts in m

Octaheme nitrite reductases: structure and properties.

Octaheme oxidoreductases are widespread among various bacterial taxa involved in the biogeochemical nitrogen cycle. The evolution of octaheme oxidoreductases of the nitrogen cycle from the evolutionarily more ancient pentaheme nitrite reductases was accompanied by changes in function from reduction of nitrogen oxides to their oxidation under changing environmental conditions. Octaheme nitrite reductases, which are the subject of the present review, are of a transitional form that combines structural and functional characteristics of pentaheme reductases and octaheme oxidases and possesses a nu

Sulfur-carbon loop enhanced efficient nitrogen removal mechanism from iron sulfide-mediated mixotrophic partial denitrification/anammox systems.

This study successfully established Iron Sulfide-Mediated mixotrophic Partial Denitrification/Anammox system, achieving nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiency of 97.26% and 78.12%, respectively, with COD/NO3--N of 1.00. Isotopic experiments and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy analysis confirmed that iron sulfide enhanced autotrophic Partial Denitrification performance. Meanwhile, various sulfur valence states functioned as electron buffers, reinforcing nitrogen and sulfur cycles. Microbial community analysis indicated reduced heterotrophic denitrifiers (OLB8, OLB13) under lower COD/NO3--N

Growth inhibition and activity stimulation of non-target organism nitrogen-fixing bacterium Azotobacter vinelandii by herbicide florasulam.

The herbicide florasulam is widely used to control broadleaf weeds in modern agriculture. Although the general ecotoxicity of herbicides has been verified, their effects on non-target soil functional bacteria, e.g., nitrogen-fixing bacteria, remained unknown. Herein, we investigated the potential impacts of florasulam on the nitrogen-fixing model bacterium Azotobacter vinelandii and sought to understand the underlying mechanisms. The growth activity of A. vinelandii was inhibited by florasulam in a concentration-dependent pattern, and the half-lethal concentration (IC50) was calculated as 8.21

Synthesis of Co(II)-NO(-) Complexes and Their Reactivity as a Source of Nitroxyl.

Metal-nitroxyl (M-HNO/M-NO(-)) coordination units are found in denitrification enzymes of the global nitrogen cycle, and free HNO exhibits pharmacological properties related to cardiovascular physiology that are distinct from nitric oxide (NO). To elucidate the properties that control the binding and release of coordinated nitroxyl or its anion at these biological metal sites, we synthesized {CoNO}(8) (1, 2) and {CoNO}(9) (3, 4) complexes that contain diimine-dipyrrolide supporting ligands. Experimental (NMR, IR, MS, EPR, XAS, XRD) and computational data (DFT) support an oxidation state assign

Cost-effectiveness of nitrogen mitigation by alternative household wastewater management technologies.

Household wastewater, especially from conventional septic systems, is a major contributor to nitrogen pollution. Alternative household wastewater management technologies provide similar sewerage management services but their life cycle costs and nitrogen flow implications remain uncertain. This paper addresses two key questions: (1) what are the total costs, nitrogen mitigation potential, and cost-effectiveness of a range of conventional and alternative municipal wastewater treatment technologies, and (2) what uncertainties influence these outcomes and how can we improve our understanding of t

Current Treatment Modalities for Urea Cycle Disorders.

The urea cycle, a metabolic pathway comprising six enzymes and two transporters, is necessary for mammalian nitrogen detoxification. A deficiency of any of these components disrupts this process, leading to the accumulation of nitrogen in the form of ammonia, which is especially toxic to the brain. For decades, treatment of urea cycle disorders has consisted of nitrogen scavengers, dietary protein restriction, arginine or citrulline supplementation, calorie support, and liver transplant. In 2011, carglumic acid became available as a substitute for N-acetylglutamate for N-acetylglutamate syntha

DNA- and RNA-level analyses reveal active microbial nitrogen transformation processes and microecological response mechanisms in the sediments of Lake Erhai.

Lake eutrophication is driven by both external nutrient inputs and internal nutrient cycling. In semi-enclosed faulted plateau lakes, limited hydraulic exchange reduces the nutrient-buffering capacity. While external inputs are controlled, internal release of nitrogen and NH4+ resulting from microbial activity becomes the predominant source of pollution. In this study, surface sediment and water samples were collected from seven representative monitoring sites at Lake Erhai, Yunnan Province, during summer and spring. By integrating DNA- and RNA-level analyses, we investigated active microbial

Diversity of dirammox microorganisms.

UNLABELLED: Our knowledge of the nitrogen cycle has been advanced by the discovery of anammox bacteria, ammonia-oxidizing archaea, and comammox bacteria, along with their high diversity. Direct ammonia oxidation (dirammox), a recently discovered heterotrophic nitrification pathway, converts ammonium and organic nitrogen directly to N2 through the DnfABC multienzyme system, further expanding our understanding of the nitrogen cycle. However, the taxonomic distribution, prevalence, and nitrogen metabolic potential of microorganisms encoding dirammox genes remain poorly understood. Here, large-sca

Nitrogen and carbon removal from anaerobic digester effluents with low carbon to nitrogen ratios under feammox conditions.

Removal of nitrogen and carbon from anaerobic digester (AD) effluents is challenging for currently available technologies. Herein, effective treatment for real AD effluents was achieved via the feammox process by using a Multistage Feammox Bioreactor (MSFB). The reactor achieved the best performance with AD effluent of a low carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratio of 2.5. A 6-day retention time reached removal efficiencies for NH4+ and COD at 99 % and 97 %, respectively, with a thorough conversion of NH4+ to N2. Accordingly, the MSFB achieved removal rates for N and C of 14 and 34 mg L-1 d-1, respectiv
