Computational Investigation of the Reaction Kinetics between 2-Hydroxyethyl Radical and Nitrogen Dioxide.

The 2-hydroxyethyl (CH2CH2OH), a key oxygenated carbon-centered intermediate in ethylene and ethanol oxidation, critically influences combustion chemistry. Nitrogen oxides (NOx) from hydrocarbon combustion significantly modulate its consumption kinetics by competing with the ĊH2CH2OH + O2 reaction pathway. Current literature models rely on extrapolated rate parameters from limited low-temperature and pressure experimental data, the applicability of which remains unvalidated. This study provides a rigorous theoretical investigation of the ĊH2CH2OH + NO2 reaction kinetics at the CCSD(T)/CBS//M06

Ambient Fine Particulate Matter, Nitrogen Dioxide, and Preterm Birth in New York City.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have suggested associations between air pollution and various birth outcomes, but the evidence for preterm birth is mixed. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to assess the relationship between air pollution and preterm birth using 2008-2010 New York City (NYC) birth certificates linked to hospital records. METHODS: We analyzed 258,294 singleton births with 22-42 completed weeks gestation to nonsmoking mothers. Exposures to ambient fine particles (PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) during the first, second, and cumulative third trimesters within 300 m of maternal address were estim

Nitrogen dioxide pollution exposure is associated with olfactory dysfunction in older U.S. adults.

BACKGROUND: Olfactory dysfunction has profound effects on quality of life, physical and social function, and mortality itself. Nitrogen dioxide (NO2 ) is a pervasive air pollutant that is associated with respiratory diseases. Given the olfactory nerve's anatomic exposure to airborne pollutants, we investigated the relationship between NO2 exposure and olfactory dysfunction. METHODS: The ability to identify odors was evaluated using a validated test in respondents from the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (NSHAP), a representative probability sample of home-dwelling, older U.S.

Associations between short-term changes in nitrogen dioxide and mortality in Canadian cities.

The association between daily variations in ambient concentrations of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and mortality was examined in 12 of Canada's largest cities, using a 19-yr time-series analysis (from 1981-1999). The authors employed parametric statistical methods that are not subject to the recently discovered convergence and error estimation problems of generalized additive models. An increase in the 3-d moving average of NO2 concentrations equivalent to the population-weighted study mean of 22.4 ppb was associated with a 2.25% (t = 4.45) increase in the daily nonaccidental mortality rate and was

Lactoperoxidase-catalyzed oxidation of the anticancer agent mitoxantrone by nitrogen dioxide (NO2.) radicals.

Mitoxantrone [1,4-dihydroxy-5,8-bis[[2-[(2-hydroxyethyl)amino]ethyl] amino]-9,10-anthracenedione, MXH2] is a novel anticancer agent frequently employed in the chemotherapy of leukemia and breast cancer. Earlier studies have shown that metabolic oxidation to reactive 1,4-quinone or/and 5,8-diiminequinone intermediates may be an important mechanism of activation of this agent, pertinent to its cytotoxic action in vivo. Here we report that in the presence of nitrite ions (NO2-), MXH2 undergoes oxidation by the mammalian enzyme lactoperoxidase (LPO) and hydrogen peroxide and that the process proce

Dose-response study of asthmatic volunteers exposed to nitrogen dioxide during intermittent exercise.

Twenty-one mildly asthmatic volunteers were exposed to 0, 0.3, 1.0, and 3.0 ppm nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in purified background air in an environmental control chamber. Exposures were separated by 1-wk periods and occurred in random order. Each lasted 1 hr and included three 10-min bouts of moderately heavy exercise (mean ventilation rate 41 L/min). Exposure temperature was near 22 degrees C and relative humidity near 50%. Specific airway resistance and maximal forced expiratory performance were measured preexposure, after the initial exercise, and near the end of exposure. Bronchial reactivity

Simultaneous removal of nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide using ultrasonically atomized hydrogen peroxide.

A new method was developed for denitrification and desulfurization using hydrogen peroxide with the aid of an ultrasonic nebulizer to obtain high removal efficiency of NOx and SO2. Comparing with the atomizing nozzles having the aperture size of 0.01~0.02 mm, the droplets generated using the ultrasonic nebulizer show the smallest d50 value of 7.2 μm, with 72% possessing the size less than 10 μm. Based on the numerical simulation of the vaporization rate of droplets, it is indicated that the droplets with the size of 7.2 μm can be vaporized totally at very short residence time (0.11 s) under 13

Capture of nitrogen dioxide and conversion to nitric acid in a porous metal-organic framework.

Air pollution by nitrogen oxides, NOx, is a major problem, and new capture and abatement technologies are urgently required. Here, we report a metal-organic framework (Manchester Framework Material 520 (MFM-520)) that can efficiently confine dimers of NO2, which results in a high adsorption capacity of 4.2 mmol g-1 (298 K, 0.01 bar) with full reversibility and no loss of capacity over 125 cycles. Treatment of NO2@MFM-520 with water in air leads to a quantitative conversion of the captured NO2 into HNO3, an important feedstock for fertilizer production, and fully regenerates MFM-520. The confin

Ice hockey lung - a case of mass nitrogen dioxide poisoning in the Czech Republic.

Nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) is a toxic gas, a product of combustion in malfunctioning ice-resurfacing machines. NO₂ poisoning is rare but potentially lethal. The authors report a case of mass NO₂ poisoning involving 15 amateur ice hockey players in the Czech Republic. All players were treated in the Department of Respiratory Diseases at Brno University Hospital in November 2010 - three as inpatients because they developed pneumonitis. All patients were followed-up until November 2011. Complete recovery in all but one patient was achieved by December 2010. None of the 15 patients developed asthma-li

Effect of corticosteroids on the toxic pulmonary oedema induced by nitrogen dioxide inhalation in the rat.

Various corticoid derivatives administered by inhalation or intraperitoneally were investigated for a preventive effect on the pulmonary oedema of the rat induced by the 30-min inhalation of 100-105 ppm NO2. After inhalational administration in the form of an aqueous aerosol, dexamethasone-21-isonicotinate showed a considerably greater efficacy than beclomethasone-17,21-dipropionate or dexamethasone-21-dihydrogen phosphate. With prophylactic intraperitoneal administration dexamethasone (free alcohol), dexamethasone-21-dihydrogen phosphate and 6 alpha-methylprednisolone-21-dihydrogen succinate

Exposure to Elevated Nitrogen Dioxide Concentrations and Cardiac Remodeling in Patients With Dilated Cardiomyopathy.

BACKGROUND: Empirical evidence suggests a strong link between exposure to air pollution and heart failure incidence, hospitalizations, and mortality, but the biological basis of this remains unclear. We sought to determine the relationship between differential air pollution levels and changes in cardiac structure and function in patients with dilated cardiomyopathy. METHODS AND RESULTS: We undertook a prospective longitudinal observational cohort study of patients in England with dilated cardiomyopathy (enrollment 2009-2015, n = 716, 66% male, 85% Caucasian) and conducted cross sectional anal

Emissions of nitrogen dioxide in the northeast U.S. during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown.

We have quantified the emissions of Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in the Northeast megalopolis of the United States during the COVID-19 lockdown. The measurement of NO2 emission serves as the indicator for the emission of the group of nitrogen oxides (NOx). Approximately 56% of NO2 emissions in the US are from mobile sources, and the remainder is from stationary sources. Since 2002, clean air regulations have resulted in approximately 5% compound annual reduction of NOx emissions in the US (8.2% in the study area). Therefore, when studying the impact of sporadic events like an epidemic on emissions,

[Research progress on the effects of atmospheric nitrogen dioxide on plant growth and metabo-lism].

Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is one type of the atmospheric nitrogen oxides, which is the main component of atmospheric aerosol particles. Reducing the concentration of atmospheric NO2 can decrease the haze in the air. Atmospheric NO2 deposits on plant leaves by both dry and wet deposition. After leaf absorption, atmospheric NO2 was reduced by two metabolism ways: one was the nitrogen metabolism by reductase mainly in cytoplasm and chloroplast, and the other was the pathway of NO2 decomposition reaction in the apoplast and cytoplasm. Plant absorption of NO2 disturbs plant normal growth and physiolog

Short-term effects of nitrogen dioxide on mortality: an analysis within the APHEA project.

The short-term effects of nitrogen dioxide (NO(2)) on total, cardiovascular and respiratory mortality in 30 European cities participating in the Air Pollution on Health: a European Approach (APHEA)-2 project were investigated. The association was examined using hierarchical models implemented in two stages. In the first stage, data from each city were analysed separately, whereas in the second stage, the city-specific air pollution estimates were regressed on city-specific covariates to obtain overall estimates and to explore sources of possible heterogeneity. A significant association of NO(2
