CONTEXT: The role of a nocebo response in managing urology patients is unclear.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the nocebo response in randomized placebo-controlled overactive bladder (OAB) trials of pharmacological treatment by investigating the adverse events in the placebo arms.
EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials were searched to identify potential randomized controlled trials published from 1998 to November 2019. After evaluating the risk of bias in the selected studies, all selected full-text articles were included due to their overall

The beneficial effects of placebos and the harmful effects of nocebos on motor functions concern not only sports performance but also pathological conditions and, in particular, movement disorders. In the pathological context, most studies have been conducted on Parkinson disease, where placebo and nocebo can influence motor and nonmotor symptoms, modulate the activity of subcortical and cortical brain regions, and, in the case of placebos, induce the dopaminergic release in the basal ganglia. In contrast, knowledge about placebo and nocebo effects in other movement disorders is still limited

BACKGROUND: The 'placebo effect' and 'nocebo effect' are phenomena whereby beneficial (placebo) or adverse (nocebo) effects result from the expectation that an inert substance will relieve or cause a particular symptom. These terms are often inappropriately applied to effects experienced on drug therapy. Quantifying the magnitude of placebo and nocebo effects in clinical trials is problematic because it requires a 'no treatment' arm. To overcome the difficulties associated with measuring the nocebo effect, and the fact that its definition refers to inert compounds, rather than drugs, we introd

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study is to understand the temporal relationship between the somatization usually attributed to RF-EMFs, and to evaluate the attribution hypothesis and the nocebo hypothesis in this context.
METHOD: In this longitudinal study, data from the Dutch Occupational and Environmental Health Cohort Study (AMIGO) was analyzed, consisting of a baseline questionnaire collected in 2011 (14,829 participants) and a follow-up questionnaire collected in 2015 (7,904 participants). Participants completed a questionnaire providing information on their health status, perceived envir

AIM: The nocebo effect, such as nausea and vomiting, is one of the major reasons patients discontinue therapy. The underlying mechanisms remain unknown due to a lack of reliable experimental models. The goal of this study was to develop a new animal model of nocebo-related nausea by combining observational learning and Pavlovian conditioning paradigms.
METHODS: Male Sprague-Dawley rats with nitroglycerin-induced migraine were given 0.9% saline (a placebo) or LiCl (a nausea inducer) following headache relief, according to different paradigms.
RESULTS: Both strategies provoked nocebo nausea re

Influential theoretical accounts take the position that classical conditioning can induce placebo effects through conscious expectancies. In the current study two different conditioning procedures (hidden and open) were used to separate expectancy from conditioning in order to reveal the role of expectancy in the formation of nocebo hyperalgesia. Eighty-seven healthy females were randomly assigned to three groups (hidden conditioning, open conditioning, and control). Participants were selected according to the Fear of Pain Questionnaire scores and assigned to two subgroups: high and low level

This article presents the third molar removal in a highly hypnotizable patient, who had been successfully submitted to oral surgery with hypnosis as stand-alone anesthesia in previous sessions. Unexpectedly, hypnosis initially failed, as a result of a nocebo response due to a previous dentist's bad communication; two complaints made by the patient were associated with increased sympathetic activity (as defined by increased heart rate and electrodermal activity and decreased heart rate variability). After deepening of hypnosis, the patient achieved a full hypnotic analgesia allowing for a succe

It has been shown repeatedly that perceiving itch-related pictures or listening to a lecture on itch can enhance itch sensation and scratching behaviour (Niemeier and Gieler, 2000; Holle et al., 2012; Lloyd et al., 2013), indicating that itch is strongly influenced by expectations. Using fMRI, we investigated the neural correlates of the itch-related nocebo effect in healthy male and female human subjects. Itch sensation on the left forearm was induced by cutaneous histamine application and thermally modulated, with cooling leading to higher itch. Nocebo-induced aggravation of histaminergic it

Pain perception can be powerfully influenced by an individual's expectations and beliefs. Although the cortical circuitry responsible for pain modulation has been thoroughly investigated, the brainstem pathways involved in the modulatory phenomena of placebo analgesia and nocebo hyperalgesia remain to be directly addressed. This study used ultra-high-field 7 tesla functional MRI (fMRI) to accurately resolve differences in brainstem circuitry present during the generation of placebo analgesia and nocebo hyperalgesia in healthy human participants (N = 25, 12 male). Over 2 successive days, throug

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this systematic review (SR) was to answer the following question: "In adult patients with temporomandibular disorder (TMD)-related pain, what is the placebo or nocebo effect of different therapies?"
METHODS: A SR was performed with randomised clinical placebo-controlled trials on diagnosed painful TMD studies from five main databases and from three grey literature. Studies included must have sample older than 18 years, with painful TMD, which diagnosis was done by Research Diagnostic Criteria (RDC/TMD) or Diagnostic Criteria (DC/TMD).
RESULTS: Out of 770 articles obtai

Informing patients about potential side effects of pain treatment is a requirement that protects patients and aids decision making, but it increases the likelihood of unwanted nocebo side effects. If patients do not desire all side-effect information, it may be possible to ethically reduce nocebo effects through authorized concealment of side effects, whereby patients and clinicians engage in shared decision-making to regulate the disclosure of side-effect information. Currently, there is no experimental data clarifying the factors that causally influence desire for side-effect information in

OBJECTIVES: Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) are commonly used to treat disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI). However, these medications are often associated with side effects that lead to early treatment discontinuation. Research in other chronic medical conditions suggests that many TCA side effects may be caused by nocebo (negative placebo) effects. The current study tests a brief, verbal intervention aimed at improving tolerance of TCAs in DGBI by providing education about nocebo effects.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This pilot randomized controlled trial was performed in a tertiary care g

Statins are hypolipidaemic in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) positive individuals. However, their effect on all-cause mortality and rate of discontinuation is unclear. We conducted a systematic review to evaluate the impact of statins on all-cause mortality, discontinuation rates, and risk of adverse effects among HIV patients on highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). We searched four electronic databases from inception until October 2021 for trials and cohort studies evaluating the effects of statin treatment versus placebo in HIV patients. Forty-seven studies involving 91,594 pati

The expectations of patients enhance the probability of their occurrence and are thereby the main triggers for inducing placebo and nocebo responses. Strong placebo effects are not only regularly observed in pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical sham treatment in placebo controlled studies but also make a considerable contribution to any real treatment. The accompanying words are essential to ensure maximum impact of drugs and other forms of treatment. They should contain positive expressions instead of negations. Such a strengthening of drug therapy by placebo effects is more important than t

Placebo effects are among the greatest paradoxes in medical research. Although more data on placebos are available from placebo-controlled trials than on any treatment in medicine, there has been comparatively little deep interrogation of issues related to their measurement, appraisal, and interpretation. Most of the work that has been done, including that in psychiatry, is narrowly focused on strategies for mitigating placebo effects and the challenges they might pose. In this Review, paper 2 of 2 on reconceptualising placebo and nocebo effects, we shift our focus from clinical practice to cl

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: Although various strategies have been examined to mitigate discomfort during sampling, arterial blood gas (ABG) is a common and often painful procedure in emergency departments (EDs). Hypnotic communication, characterized by positive language/suggestions, may help reduce perceived procedural pain. Conversely, the traditional use of negative language may increase discomfort through a 'nocebo' effect.
OBJECTIVE: To assess whether hypnotic communication reduces procedural pain during ABG sampling compared with neutral or nocebo communication, when delivered by emergenc

Symptoms during statin therapy are common and often attributed to statin intolerance. Recent data suggest few patients are truly intolerant to statins. Muscle symptoms are similar in statin and control groups in blinded treatment periods of clinical trials. The "nocebo" effect may occur during open-label statin treatment, when previously asymptomatic study participants report symptoms attributed to statin therapy, or during placebo-controlled trials. Most patients reporting statin intolerance can tolerate blinded moderate intensity statin therapy. In clinical practice the large majority of pat

Even though previously described iron-containing structures in the upper beak of pigeons were almost certainly macrophages, not magnetosensitive neurons, behavioural and neurobiological evidence still supports the involvement of the ophthalmic branch of the trigeminal nerve (V1) in magnetoreception. In previous behavioural studies, inactivation of putative V1-associated magnetoreceptors involved either application of the surface anaesthetic lidocaine to the upper beak or sectioning of V1. Here, we compared the effects of lidocaine treatment, V1 ablations and sham ablations on magnetic field-dr

During labor and birth, inadvertent negative suggestions from care givers and support people are common and may lead to negative experiences known as nocebo effects. Counteracting nocebo effects with the use of effective communication techniques can reduce distress, enhance birth experiences, and improve health outcomes. There are very few examples in the literature describing how effective communication techniques can be used by midwives and other birth attendants when providing care to individuals in labor and birth. This article provides a practical structured communication approach to faci
