Bayesian estimation of semiparametric nonlinear dynamic factor analysis models using the Dirichlet process prior.

Parameters in time series and other dynamic models often show complex range restrictions and their distributions may deviate substantially from multivariate normal or other standard parametric distributions. We use the truncated Dirichlet process (DP) as a non-parametric prior for such dynamic parameters in a novel nonlinear Bayesian dynamic factor analysis model. This is equivalent to specifying the prior distribution to be a mixture distribution composed of an unknown number of discrete point masses (or clusters). The stick-breaking prior and the blocked Gibbs sampler are used to enable effi

Dynamic edge-event-based consensus of nonlinear multi-agent systems with sampled-data measurement.

This paper investigates the leader-following consensus problem for a class of nonlinear multi-agent systems (MASs) by developing a novel edge-event-triggered control framework. To alleviate communication burdens, an edge-based triggering strategy is employed, wherein both the control protocols and triggering conditions depend exclusively on local relative information, eliminating the reliance on global network knowledge. Recognizing the constraints of practical communication scenarios, asynchronous information interactions across different edges are explicitly considered. As a core contributio

On the Effectiveness of Sparse Identification Methods to Detect Nonlinear Models of Oscillatory Dynamics in Psychology and the Life Sciences.

Traditionally, applied mathematics and nonlinear analysis have focused on creating models of real-world systems using first principles. However, in many contemporary scientific domains, first-principles approaches face increasing limitations, including but not limited to the challenges posed by complex, high-dimensional, or poorly characterized systems. In response, data science leverages the availability of large datasets and computational power to study problems where empirical understanding is incomplete or the underlying mechanisms are only partially known. A combination of both paradigms

Nonlinear Dynamic Modeling and Analysis of an L-Shaped Multi-Beam Jointed Structure with Tip Mass.

A dynamic model of an L-shaped multi-beam joint structure is presented to investigate the nonlinear dynamic behavior of the system. Firstly, the nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) of motion for the beams, the governing equations of the tip mass, and their matching conditions and boundary conditions are obtained. The natural frequencies and the global mode shapes of the linearized model of the system are determined, and the orthogonality relations of the global mode shapes are established. Then, the global mode shapes and their orthogonality relations are used to derive a set of no

Nonlinear dynamic analysis of the pure "buckling" mechanism during blow-out trauma of the human orbit.

Considering the interplay between orbital bones and intraorbital soft tissues, commonly accepted patterns of the blow-out type of trauma within the human orbit require more thorough investigation to assess the minimal health-threatening impact value. Two different three-dimensional finite element method (FEM) models of the human orbital region were developed to simulate the pure "buckling" mechanism of orbital wall fracture in two variants: the model of orbital bone elements and the model of orbital bone, orbit and intraorbital tissue elements. The mechanical properties of the so-defined numer

Nonlinear dynamical analysis of the neonatal EEG time series: the relationship between sleep state and complexity.

OBJECTIVE: The complexity of the EEG time series during stages of neonatal sleep states is investigated. The relationship between these sleep states, birth status (i.e. preterm and full-term), and the complexity of the EEG is assessed. METHODS: Dimensional complexity, an estimate of the correlation dimension (D(2)) of the EEG time series, is used as a novel index for quantifying the complexity of the EEG time series during different neonatal sleep states. The dimensional complexity is estimated by using both the Grassberger-Procaccia algorithm and Theiler's modified algorithm. Also, the hypot

Hybrid grammar-based approach to nonlinear dynamical system identification from biological time series.

We introduce a grammar-based hybrid approach to reverse engineering nonlinear ordinary differential equation models from observed time series. This hybrid approach combines a genetic algorithm to search the space of model architectures with a Kalman filter to estimate the model parameters. Domain-specific knowledge is used in a context-free grammar to restrict the search space for the functional form of the target model. We find that the hybrid approach outperforms a pure evolutionary algorithm method, and we observe features in the evolution of the dynamical models that correspond with the em

A Review of Mechanical Degradation, Interfacial Nonlinear Dynamics and Multi-Bolt Coupling Degradation Mechanisms of Flange-Bolted Joints.

Bolted flange joints are critical load-bearing connection components of complex mechanical equipment, whose service performance is dominated by the coupled evolution of bolt preload relaxation and interfacial stiffness degradation under long-term cyclic combined loads. Under cyclic transverse excitation, the contact interfaces experience successive full-stick, partial microslip and macroslip states, accompanied by embedding, creep and friction-induced wear, resulting in time-varying preload attenuation and the continuous degradation of joint mechanical properties. Distinguishing preload relaxa

40 Hz noninvasive transcranial ultrasound stimulation modulates multiscale nonlinear dynamics of hippocampal CA1 neural oscillations of Alzheimer's mouse model.

Objective.Aberrant nonlinear dynamics of hippocampal neural oscillations are a hallmark of early network dysfunction in Alzheimer's disease (AD), with critical roles in memory processing. Although transcranial ultrasound stimulation (TUS) has shown cognitive benefits in AD models and patients, its effects on the nonlinear dynamics of hippocampal CA1 oscillations and their multiscale organization remain unclear.Approach.Here, we applied 40 Hz noninvasive TUS to the hippocampal CA1 region of AD mouse model and recorded local field potentials before, during, and after stimulation. Exploring optimal control strategies in a nonlinear fractional bi-susceptible model for Covid-19 dynamics using Atangana-Baleanu derivative.

In this article, a nonlinear fractional bi-susceptible [Formula: see text] model is developed to mathematically study the deadly Coronavirus disease (Covid-19), employing the Atangana-Baleanu derivative in Caputo sense (ABC). A more profound comprehension of the system's intricate dynamics using fractional-order derivative is explored as the primary focus of constructing this model. The fundamental properties such as positivity and boundedness, of an epidemic model have been proven, ensuring that the model accurately reflects the realistic behavior of disease spread within a population. Nonlinear Firing Dynamics in Spinal Interneurons May Delineate the Presence or Absence of Spinal Cord Injury-related Neuropathic Pain.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) often results in hyperexcitability of sensory-dominant regions of the spinal cord, leading to muscle spasms, spasticity, and SCI-related neuropathic pain (SCI-NP). In part, these symptoms are due to injury-induced alterations in neuromodulatory drive. Altered neuromodulatory drive changes a neuron's input-output function, increasing or decreasing its sensitivity to a given excitatory or inhibitory input through actions on metabotropic receptors on the dendrites. Many of these actions result in downstream effects on the voltage-gated ion channels that mediate persistent

Ca2+ channel dynamics explain the nonlinear neuroplasticity induction by cathodal transcranial direct current stimulation over the primary motor cortex.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) induces polarity-dependent neuroplasticity: with conventional protocols, anodal tDCS results in excitability enhancement while cathodal stimulation reduces excitability. However, partially non-linear responses are observed with increased stimulation intensity and/or duration. Cathodal tDCS with 2 mA for 20 min reverses the excitability-diminishing plasticity induced by stimulation with 1 mA into excitation, while cathodal tDCS with 3 mA again results in excitability diminution. Since tDCS generates NMDA receptor-dependent neuroplasticity, such non

Experimental investigation of alternative transmission functions: Quantitative evidence for the importance of nonlinear transmission dynamics in host-parasite systems.

Understanding pathogen transmission is crucial for predicting and managing disease. Nonetheless, experimental comparisons of alternative functional forms of transmission remain rare, and those experiments that are conducted are often not designed to test the full range of possible forms. To differentiate among 10 candidate transmission functions, we used a novel experimental design in which we independently varied four factors-duration of exposure, numbers of parasites, numbers of hosts and parasite density-in laboratory infection experiments. We used interactions between amphibian hosts and t
