Violent Death Rates and Risk for Released Prisoners in North Carolina.

Released prisoners face high risk of early mortality. The risk of violent death, specifically homicide and suicide, are addressed in this study. Data on inmates released from the North Carolina Division of Adult Corrections (N = 476) matched to the Violent Death Reporting System are analyzed to estimate rates and demographic and criminal justice-related predictors. Violent death rates for persons released from prison were more than 7 times higher than for the general adult population. Results from multinomial logistic regression indicate decreased homicide risk for every year of age, whereas m

An epidemiologic study of tracheoesophageal fistula and esophageal atresia in North Carolina.

Two hundred and eighty-five cases of TEF/EA occurring in North Carolina from 1952-1978 were reviewed. Except for a greater incidence of low-birth-weight infants and hydramnios during pregnancy, the cases appeared to be representative of the population. Clustering of cases over time was statistically confirmed. The cyclic variation suggested an association with an infectious agent. The variation of reported infectious hepatitis cases during the period of this study resembled the variation of TEF/EA cases that had no other documented congenital malformations.

Risk factors for chronic lung disease in the surfactant era: a North Carolina population-based study of very low birth weight infants. North Carolina Neonatologists Association.

OBJECTIVE: To identify risk factors for chronic lung disease (CLD) in a population-based cohort of very low birth weight infants, born in an era of surfactant usage. We specifically investigated the effects of antenatal steroids, nosocomial infection, patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), fluid management, and ventilator support strategies. METHODS: Data were prospectively collected on 1244 infants born in North Carolina in 1994 with birth weights 500 to 1500 g, and treated at 1 of the 13 intensive care nurseries across the state. The outcome of interest was CLD, defined as dependency on supplement

Asheville, North Carolina: The Origin of the American Tuberculosis Sanitarium Movement.

The digitization of academic publications and newspapers from the 1800s has permitted identification of several authoritative sources that credit Dr. Joseph W. Gleitsmann with establishing the first successful tuberculosis sanitarium in the United States in Asheville, North Carolina, in 1875, antedating by 9 years the Trudeau Sanatorium in Saranac Lake, New York. The facility used German climatological methods and a defined medical treatment program. Gleitsmann's Mountain Sanitarium for Pulmonary Diseases had a 30-bed occupancy and published outcomes data from 5 years of clinical experience by

Characterizing Cancer Burden in the American Indian Population in North Carolina.

BACKGROUND: The American Indian (AI) population in North Carolina has limited access to the Indian Health Service. Consequently, cancer burden and disparities may differ from national estimates. We describe the AI cancer population and examine AI-White disparities in cancer incidence and mortality. METHODS: We identified cancer cases diagnosed among adult AI and White populations between 2014 and 2018 from the North Carolina Central Cancer Registry. We estimated incidence and mortality rate ratios (IRR and MRR) by race. In addition, between the AI and White populations, we estimated the ratio

The Status and Impact of Severe Housing Problems and Evictions in North Carolina.

Housing costs, eviction rates, homelessness, and the number of families living in substandard conditions are rising quickly. The poor quality of housing and high rates of evictions today will result in additional health issues and challenge systems to meet the "Healthy North Carolina 2030" housing goals.

Barriers to Access and Inadequate Levels of Care in North Carolina Jails.

People addicted to opiates are more likely to avoid returning to these drugs if they participate in a program that includes taking maintenance doses of methadone or buprenorphine than with an abstinence program. Although medical opinion has long been divided on the issue of abstinence vs medication-assisted treatment, the latter seems to be gaining respect as an evidence-based approach.

Exposure to Contaminated Drinking Water and Health Disparities in North Carolina.

OBJECTIVES: To examine drinking water quality in majority Black periurban neighborhoods in Wake County, North Carolina, that are excluded from nearby municipal water service and to estimate the health benefits of extending water service. METHODS: We tested 3 samples collected July through December 2014 in 57 private wells for microbial contaminants. We compared contaminant prevalences to those in adjacent community water systems (35 280 samples from routine monitoring). Using a population intervention model, we assessed the number of annual emergency department visits for acute gastrointestin

Improved Ascertainment of Pregnancy-Associated Suicides and Homicides in North Carolina.

INTRODUCTION: Injuries, including those resulting from violence, are a leading cause of death during pregnancy and the postpartum period. North Carolina, along with other states, has implemented surveillance systems to improve reporting of maternal deaths, but their ability to capture violent deaths is unknown. The purpose of this study was to quantify the improvement in ascertainment of pregnancy-associated suicides and homicides by linking data from the North Carolina Violent Death Reporting System (NC-VDRS) to traditional maternal mortality surveillance files. METHODS: Enhanced case ascert

First Report of Trichodorus obtusus on Turfgrass in North Carolina, U.S.A.

In May 2014, 11 sandy soil samples were collected at a depth of about 5 to 15 cm from a golf course community in Wilmington, NC, composed of Bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon) from the fairway, St. Augustinegrass (Stenotaphrum secundatum) from the lawn, and Zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica) from the tee, all of which showed spotted yellowing and necrosis. Plant-parasitic nematodes were extracted from soil samples by a combination of elutriation and sugar centrifugal-flotation methods at the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Nematode Assay Lab, Raleigh, NC. The results re

Congenital malaria as a result of Plasmodium malariae--North Carolina, 2000.

Congenitally acquired malaria is rare in the United States; < or = 10 cases are reported each year. Congenital infection with Plasmodium malariae is particularly uncommon because distribution of this parasite is focal and sparse in areas where P. falciparum is endemic. The last case of congenital P. malariae infection in the United States was reported in 1992. This report describes the investigation of a case of P. malariae in an infant with no travel history outside of the United States and suggests that health-care providers suspect malaria when treating a neonate or young infant with fever
