CLINICAL CASE OF CUTANEOUS T-CELL LYMPHOMA IN A PATIENT WHO GOT INJURED AFTER THE DISASTER ON CHORNOBYL NUCLEAR POWER PLANT.

A clinical case of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma is presented in this paper - Mycosis fungoides, a tumorous stage that developed in a patient who suffered as a result of the Chornobyl accident. The most likely development of this di- sease is due to the influence of the radiation factor, which led to the affection of lymphoid cells. This disease has characteristic staging with a typical morphological pattern only in later stages, therefore, the diagnosis usually occurs in evident clinical and histological changes of the mycotic and tumorous stages, when treatment is ineffec- tive. The features of

Pathological findings of Japanese Black Cattle living in the restricted area of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident, 2013-2016.

Fifty-one Japanese black cattle from four farms in the evacuation zone of the Fukushima nuclear accident were examined pathologically during the period, 2013-2016. We found no evidence of a radiation effect on pathological findings in any of these autopsy cases, although nine cases (3.7%) of enzootic bovine leukosis (EBL) and three cases (1.2%) of goiter were diagnosed. Estimated integrating dose of external exposure in EBL cases ranged from a maximum of 1200 mSv to a minimum of 72 mSv. Clinically, five cases showed wobble, dysstasia or paralysis. Exophthalmos was observed in three cases. Macr

Sonographic determination of cutaneous and subcutaneous fibrosis after accidental exposure to ionising radiation in the course of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident.

Chronic cutaneous lesions in eight of 15 survivors of the Chernobyl nuclear energy plant accident presenting with clinical features of cutaneous radiation fibrosis were examined 6 years after exposure using high-frequency ultrasound. In all patients, lesional skin was examined using both the B- and A-modes. Similar phenomena were found in all patients. The corium was increased in thickness as well as density compared to normal skin. The increase in density was seen not only in the medium strata but also particularly at the border between corium and subcutaneous tissue. Within the subcutaneous

Dicentric and translocation analysis for retrospective dose estimation in humans exposed to ionising radiation during the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident.

Chromosome analyses were carried out in peripheral blood lymphocytes obtained between September 1991 and March 1992 from 15 persons exposed to ionising radiation during the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident. At present, all are being treated for symptoms of the delayed stage of the cutaneous radiation syndrome. Biological dose-equivalent estimates were determined, either by measuring the frequency of dicentric and ring chromosomes in first division unstable cells from conventional preparations (Qdr method), or by measuring the frequency of stable translocations using two-colour fluorescen

Design and development of a comprehensive program for the assessment and analysis of environmental effects due to the release of radioactive materials from the stack of nuclear installations: A case study in Bushehr nuclear power plant.

The current investigation presents a comprehensive program called KIANA to assess and analyze the environmental effects due to the release of radioactive materials from the stack of nuclear installations. Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant Unit One (BNPP-1) is modeled using the KIANA software and the release of radioactive materials from the BNPP-1 stack on the members of the public through the airborne pathway is evaluated during normal operation as well as in the accident conditions including Design Basis Accidents (DBA) and Beyond Design Basis Accidents (BDBA). To verify and validate the KIANA sof

Protracted exposure to 134Cs and 137Cs gives substantial contribution to long-term thyroid absorbed dose after nuclear power plant accidents.

Thyroid dose estimations after nuclear power plant (NPP) accidents are traditionally based on internal uptake of radioiodine, mainly 131I, either by instrumental measurements of thyroid uptake or by ecological estimations based on geographical dispersion of the radioiodine cloud, demographics, and food habits. However, it has been shown that 134Cs and 137Cs in some cases can be the dominant contributors to the thyroid dose over long time following NPP accidents. Based on an ecological model using Swedish-specific parameters of the radioactive fallout from the Chernobyl accident in 1986, estima

Estimated Thyroid Inhalation Doses Based on Body Surface Contamination Levels of Evacuees After the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant Accident.

Doses of inhaled radionuclides received during evacuation might be correlated with amounts of those radionuclides on an evacuee's body surface. The purpose of the present study was to estimate thyroid equivalent doses based on body surface contamination measured with a Geiger-Mueller survey meter on 2,087 evacuees from Tomioka, Okuma, Futaba, Naraha, Namie, Minamisoma, and other municipalities in Japan. The measurement value in cpm was translated into Bq cm according to the radionuclide composition obtained by germanium gamma-spectrometry analyses of two persons' clothing. Thyroid equivalent d

The Great East Japan Earthquake, tsunami, and Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident: a triple disaster affecting the mental health of the country.

The Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011 caused 2 other serious disasters: a tsunami and a nuclear power plant accident. A chronic shortage of mental health resources had been previously reported in the Tohoku region, and the triple disaster worsened the situation. Eventually a public health approach was implemented by providing a common room in temporary housing developments to build a sense of community and to approach evacuees so that they could be triaged and referred to mental health teams. Japan now advocates using psychological first aid to educate first responders. This article extracts

Differences in the sensitisation to ragweed pollen and occurrence of late summer allergic symptoms between native and immigrant workers of the nuclear power plant of Hungary.

Regular medical screening including allergic symptoms of workers of the Nuclear Power Plant in Paks, Hungary, offered a unique opportunity to study the influence of the environmental factors on the development of allergy. The city Paks has been one the areas of the country most heavily exposed to ragweed pollen allergens. The occurrence and extent of sensitisation assessed by skin prick test to common allergens and prevalence of seasonal and perennial allergic symptoms were compared among 880 workers (695 immigrants, 185 natives) with self-reported allergic symptoms. The percentage of sensitis

Epidemiological surveillance at Electricité de France-Gaz de France: health assessment of nuclear power plant employees between 1993 and 1998.

Because the 17,500 employees working in nuclear power plants at Electricité de France, the national power company, may be exposed to a wide variety of industrial hazards, the health insurance department of the company has set up an epidemiological surveillance programme for them. This report describes its first stage, an analysis of their health problems. This descriptive, cross-sectional and exhaustive study examined sick-leave, mortality and cancer incidence to assess the health of the employees working from 1993 through 1998. The analysis compared the employees in nuclear power plants, cons

Occupational Exposure to Low Dose Ionizing Radiation and the Incidence of Surgically Removed Cataracts and Glaucoma in a Cohort of Ontario Nuclear Power Plant Workers.

Ionizing radiation is a human carcinogen and has been shown to increase the risk of non-cancerous ocular disorders. Specifically, findings from epidemiological studies suggest that ionizing radiation leads to the development of cataracts and to a lesser extent glaucoma, however, there are uncertainties of these risks at lower exposures. We analyzed data from a cohort of 60,874 Ontario Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) workers within the Canadian National Dose Registry (NDR). These workers were monitored for whole-body exposure to ionizing radiation using dosimeters, with exposure estimates derived for

Socioeconomic status, damage-related conditions, and PTSD following the Fukushima-daiichi nuclear power plant accident:The Fukushima Health Management Survey.

The Great East Japan Earthquake severely damaged the Tohoku and Kanto districts, and Fukushima Prefecture faced a subsequent nuclear disaster. Few studies have reported the effects of socioeconomic stressors on individuals' mental status following disasters. We analyzed the responses of 60,704 adult residents of a designated restricted area to the PTSD Checklist-Stressor-Specific Version (PCL-S). The relationships between the PCL-S scores and demographic, socioeconomic, and damage-related variables were analyzed using regression analysis to predict participants' severity of PTSD symptoms. Pathological characteristics of thyroid glands from Japanese Black Cattle living in the restricted area of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident.

To study the effect of ionizing radiation on thyroid glands, 66 Japanese Black cattle residing in the restricted area of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in 2013-2017 were pathologically examined. There were no clinical symptoms of thyroid disease in these cattle. Three cases of goiter and seven of atrophy were found in two among the four farms examined. Cases of goiter exhibited normal morphological structure without mass or nodule formation in thyroid glands. Cellular atypia or capsular invasion of the follicular epithelium was absent. The estimated integrated dose of external radia

Association between the detection rate of thyroid cancer and the external radiation dose-rate after the nuclear power plant accidents in Fukushima, Japan.

A thyroid cancer ultrasonography screening for all residents 18 years old or younger living in the Fukushima prefecture started in October 2011 to investigate the possible effect of the radiological contamination after the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accidents as of March 12 to 15, 2011. Thyroid cancer in 184 cases was reported by February 2017. The question arises to which extent those cancer cases are a biological consequence of the radiation exposure or an artefactual result of the intense screening of a large population.Experiences with the Chernobyl accident suggest that the ext

Measuring and assessing individual external doses during the rehabilitation phase in Iitate village after the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident.

After the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident in 2011, Iitate village was placed under an evacuation order because the level of radioactive materials drifting from the nuclear plant to the village was above a government-set level for allowing residents to live in the area. The evacuation advisory for most of the village was lifted on 31 March 2017. For displaced residents deciding whether or not to return to their homes, it is important to correctly understand and estimate the realistic individual external doses they will receive after returning to the village. In this study, with t

Incidence of childhood leukemia before and after shut down of nuclear power plants in Germany in 2011: A population-based register study during 2004 to 2019.

The association between leukemia and proximity to nuclear-power-plants (NPPs) has been assessed in several countries with inconsistent results. A case-control study from Germany had shown an increased risk for childhood leukemia (diagnoses 1980-2003) near NPPs. Germany began shutting down nuclear reactors in 2011, following the Fukushima disaster. We tested whether the previously observed association between leukemia and proximity to NPP persisted despite the shutdown. We used an ecological study design to investigate the incidence of leukemia during 2004 to 2019 in children aged 0 to 14 years
