Gene loci on different chromosomes can preferentially colocalize in the cell nucleus. However, many of the mechanisms mediating this spatial proximity remain to be elucidated. Silver-binding nucleolar organizer regions (AgNORs) have been counted in sections of routinely processed paraffin-embedded tissue blocks and have been shown to assist in the distinction between benign and malignant lesions. Forty-one cases of typical melanocytic skin lesions (15 intradermal nevi, 14 Spitz nevi and 12 malignant melanomas) were used to investigate the value of staining of nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) in the differential diagnosis of such pigmented lesions.
