Although the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii is ubiquitous in birds and mammals worldwide, the full suite of hosts and transmission routes is not completely understood, especially in the Arctic. Toxoplasma gondii occurrence in humans and wildlife can be high in Arctic regions, despite apparently limited opportunities for transmission of oocysts shed by felid definitive hosts. Arctic foxes (Vulpes lagopus) are under increasing anthropogenic and ecologic pressure, leading to population declines in parts of their range. Our understanding of T. gondii occurrence in arctic foxes is limited to

Although associated with all plants, fungal endophytes (microfungi that live within healthy plant tissues) represent an unknown proportion of fungal diversity. While there is a growing appreciation of their ecological importance and human uses, little is known about their host specificity, geographic structure, or phylogenetic relationships. We surveyed endophytic Ascomycota from healthy photosynthetic tissues of three plant species (Huperzia selago, Picea mariana, and Dryas integrifolia, representing lycophytes, conifers, and angiosperms, respectively) in northern and southern boreal forest (

BACKGROUND: Indigenous populations in Canada experience disproportionately high cardiovascular risk, yet contemporary data on echocardiographic findings in the Arctic remain limited. This study evaluated indications, echocardiographic findings, and subsequent management of patients undergoing transthoracic echocardiography in Eastern Nunavut.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of all consecutive transthoracic echocardiograms performed between January 2020 and December 2023 in Iqaluit and surrounding remote communities. Demographic data, echocardiographic results, and management de

Echinococcosis is a rare but endemic condition in people in Canada, caused by a zoonotic cestode for which the source of human infection is ingestion of parasite eggs shed by canids. The objectives of this study were to identify risk factors associated with infection and to measure the cost-utility of introducing an echinococcosis prevention program in a rural area. We analyzed human case reports submitted to the Canadian Institutes for Health Information between 2002 and 2011. Over this 10 year period, there were 48 cases associated with E. granulosus/E. canadensis, 16 with E. multilocularis,

OBJECTIVES: Birth defects occur in all ethnic groups, remaining an important world-wide cause of perinatal and infant morbidity. This contributes greatly to an excess of health care dollars allocated to the care and repair of those affected. This is especially true when those affected live in remote geographical locations.
STUDY DESIGN: A chart review of 2567 live births of children of Inuit parents residing in Arctic Quebec (Nunavik) and on Baffin Island (Nunavut) between 1989 and 1994 (five years) was carried out compared to rates of anomalies of the Alberta Congenital Anomalies Surveillanc

Brucella serostatus was evaluated in 3189 muskoxen sampled between 1989 and 2016 from various locations of the Canadian Arctic archipelago and mainland, near the communities of Sachs Harbour and Ulukhaktok, Northwest Territories, and Cambridge Bay and Kugluktuk, Nunavut. Brucella antibodies were found only in muskoxen sampled around Cambridge Bay, both on southern Victoria Island and on the adjacent mainland (Kent Peninsula). Consistent with participatory epidemiology data documented from local harvesters describing increased Brucella-like syndromes (swollen joints and lameness) and a decrease

A baseline for exposure to organochlorine and metal contaminants has been established for mothers and newborns in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut areas of Arctic Canada. Maternal and umbilical cord blood plasma organochlorine levels are described for Inuit, Dene, Métis, Caucasian and Other non-Aboriginal participants. Overall, 523 women volunteered to participate by giving their written informed consent between May 1994 and June 1999, resulting in the collection of 386 maternal blood samples, 407 cord blood samples and 351 maternal/cord pairs. Nearly half of all the participants regularl

BACKGROUND: In Canada, active tuberculosis (TB) disease rates remain disproportionately higher among the Indigenous population, especially among the Inuit in the north. We used mathematical modeling to evaluate how interventions might enhance existing TB control efforts in a region of Nunavut.
METHODS: We developed a stochastic, agent-based model of TB transmission that captured the unique household and community structure. Evaluated interventions included: (i) rapid treatment of active cases; (ii) rapid contact tracing; (iii) expanded screening programs for latent TB infection (LTBI); and (i

BACKGROUND: The incidence of invasive group A Streptococcus (GAS) disease can vary over time and geographic region, possibly reflecting the population's susceptibility to particular strains but also variation in the predominant M/emm types. Canadian surveillance documented an epidemic of an uncommon M/emm59 type from 2006 to 2009.
METHODS: Invasive GAS isolates are submitted by Public Health Laboratories in Canada to the National Centre for Streptococcus for M/emm typing. Patient age, sex, geographic location, and the anatomical source of isolate are provided with the isolate. When it was rec

BACKGROUND: Indigenous health workforce reform in Canada remains shaped by colonial jurisdictional fragmentation, Indigenous-specific racism, and underinvestment. Although cultural safety initiatives and recruitment supports have expanded, reforms remain uneven and poorly coordinated.
OBJECTIVE: To compare recent Indigenous health workforce policy instruments in Canada and identify persistent gaps and policy directions for distinctions-based, culturally rooted reform.
METHODS: We conducted a structured narrative policy review of publicly available legislation, strategies, and professional/re

BACKGROUND: Syphilis is the third most commonly reported notifiable sexually transmitted infection (STI) in Canada, following chlamydia and gonorrhea, respectively. Rates of this STI have been rising rapidly in Canada since 2001.
OBJECTIVE: To summarize trends observed in syphilis rates for 2010 to 2015 in Canada.
METHODS: Laboratory-confirmed cases of infectious syphilis and early congenital syphilis were reported to the Public Health Agency of Canada by all of the Canadian provinces and territories. National infectious syphilis rates were computed, as were rates per sex, age group and prov

The causes of mortality of free-ranging raptors range from anthropogenic (e.g., trauma) to dynamic environmental conditions that may affect habitat suitability and prey availability. The province of Ontario, Canada, is vulnerable to anthropogenic and environmental changes because of its northern latitudes and expanding human populations, both of which may impact wildlife. We retrospectively evaluated diagnostic data from raptors submitted to the Ontario/Nunavut node of the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative (CWHC) from 1991 to 2014 ( n=1,448). Submissions encompassed 29 species, most commonl

Mercury (Hg) concentrations in the fillets of Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) differ widely among neighboring oligotrophic lakes on Cornwallis Island (Nunavut, Canada), but the reasons for these differences are poorly understood. Climate change is likely affecting Hg cycling in lakes, although studies report conflicting or mixed responses. We quantified Hg bioaccumulation (BAFs), biota-sediment accumulation (BSAFs), and trophic transfer factors (TTFs) for chironomids and Arctic char in Char, Small, Resolute, and Meretta Lakes to explain lake-to-lake differences. Simultaneously, we leveraged t

American woodcock, common snipe, two species of ptarmigan (willow and rock), and three species of grouse (ruffed, spruce, and sharp-tailed) were collected from 21 locations between 1991 and 1994 as part of a nationwide survey of contaminants in game birds harvested in Canada. Breast muscle was analysed for organochlorines (chlorobenzenes, hexachlorocyclohexanes, chlordane-related compounds, DDT metabolites, mirex, dieldrin, and PCBs) and trace elements (Hg, Cd, Se, and As). The concentrations of organochlorine compounds measured in breast muscle of the birds in this survey were very low. Media

Accurately aging wildlife is essential for effective management and conservation efforts because it supports the estimation of demographic parameters used to model population dynamics and determine harvest quotas. Currently, accurately aging muskoxen is limited by the lack of validated and standardized protocols specific to this species. We investigated three methods for aging muskoxen: tooth eruption pattern, mandible morphometrics, and cementum annuli analysis (CAA). We examined 260 mandibles from community-harvested muskoxen with known harvest dates from Nunavut and the Northwest Territorie

BACKGROUND: Socioeconomic status (SES) is an important determinant of health and potential modifier of the effects of environmental contaminants. There has been a lack of comprehensive indices for measuring overall SES in Canada. Here, a more comprehensive SES index is developed aiming to support future studies exploring health outcomes related to environmental pollution in Canada.
METHODS: SES variables (n = 22, Census Canada 2006) were selected based on: cultural identities, housing characteristics, variables identified in Canadian environmental injustice studies and a previous deprivation

BACKGROUND: Discovery of Eocene non-marine vertebrates, including crocodylians, turtles, bony fishes, and mammals in Canada's High Arctic was a critical paleontological contribution of the last century because it indicated that this region of the Arctic had been mild, temperate, and ice-free during the early - middle Eocene (∼53-50 Ma), despite being well above the Arctic Circle. To date, these discoveries have been restricted to Canada's easternmost Arctic - Ellesmere and Axel Heiberg Islands (Nunavut). Although temporally correlative strata crop out over 1,000 km west, on Canada's westernmos

BACKGROUND: National hepatitis C virus (HCV) elimination efforts are contingent on the provision of care in prisons. This study aimed to assess HCV care practices in Canada's provincial/territorial prisons in 2024, comparing trends from 2020 to 2024.
METHODS: From June 14 to October 31, 2024, one representative per prison health care team (excluding Nunavut) completed a web-based survey. The outcomes of interest were HCV screening, access to direct-acting antivirals (DAAs), linkage to care following release, and access to opioid agonist therapies (OAT) and prison-based needle and syringe prog

Declining sea ice and increased variability in sea ice dynamics are altering Arctic marine food webs. Changes in sea ice dynamics and prey availability are likely to impact pagophilic (ice-dependent and ice-associated) species, such as thick-billed murres (Uria lomvia), through changes in foraging behaviour and foraging success. At the same time, extrinsic factors, such as chick demand, and intrinsic factors, such as sex, are also likely to influence foraging behaviour and foraging success of adult murres. Here, we use 3 years of data (2017-2019) to examine the impacts of environmental conditi
