The Role of Nurses and Midwives in Expanding and Sustaining Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision Services for HIV Prevention: A Systematic and Policy Review.

Male circumcision reduces men's risk of acquiring HIV through heterosexual sex, and voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) is central to HIV prevention strategies in 15 sub-Saharan African countries. Nurses have emerged as primary VMMC providers; however, barriers remain to institutionalizing nurse-led VMMC. Patient safety concerns have hindered task sharing, and regulations governing nurse-performed VMMC are not always supportive or clear. We performed a systematic review on VMMC safety by provider cadre and a desk review of national policies governing the VMMC roles of nurses and midwive

Nurses' and midwives' experiences of providing group antenatal and postnatal care at 18 health centers in Rwanda: A mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: The East Africa Preterm Birth Initiative-Rwanda began a cluster randomized controlled trial of group antenatal care (ANC) and postnatal care (PNC) in Rwanda in 2017. That trial will report its primary outcome, gestational length at birth, after data collection concludes in 2019. This nested study includes providers of ANC and/or PNC at the 18 health centers randomized to provide the group model of ANC/PNC and the 18 health centers randomized to continue providing ANC/PNC in the traditional, individual visit model. The objective of this study is to understand the experiences of prov

Assessing the accuracy of visual blood loss estimation in postpartum hemorrhage in Shanghai hospitals: A web-based survey for nurses and midwives.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This study aimed at evaluating the accuracy of visual estimated blood loss in postpartum haemorrhage by midwives and nurses, as well as exploring its influencing factors. BACKGROUND: Timely recognition of postpartum haemorrhage is critical in saving maternal lives. Yet midwives and nurses can barely distinguish whether the blood loss has reached a life-threatening amount without precise measurement. Understanding their ability to accurately estimate the amount of blood loss and the influencing factors can help improve this ability with effective measures. DESIGN: This re

The views and experiences of nurses and midwives in the provision and management of provider-initiated HIV testing and counseling: a systematic review of qualitative evidence.

BACKGROUND: Global progress towards HIV prevention and care is contingent upon increasing the number of those aware of their status through HIV testing. Provider-initiated HIV testing and counseling is recommended globally as a strategy to enhance uptake of HIV testing and is primarily conducted by nurses and midwives. Research shows that provider-initiated HIV testing and counseling implementation is sub-optimal. The reasons for this are unclear. OBJECTIVES: The review aimed to explore nurses' and midwives' views and experiences of the provision and management of provider-initiated HIV testi

The effect of an mLearning application on nurses' and midwives' knowledge and skills for the management of postpartum hemorrhage and neonatal resuscitation: pre-post intervention study.

BACKGROUND: Globally, mobile learning (mLearning) tools have attracted considerable attention as a means of continuous training for healthcare workers. Rwanda like other low-resource settings with scarce in-service training opportunities requires innovative approaches that adapt technology to context to improve healthcare workers' knowledge and skills. One such innovation is the safe delivery application (SDA), a smartphone mLearning application for Basic Emergency Obstetric and Neonatal Care (BEmONC) content. This study assessed the effect of the SDA intervention on nurses' and midwives' know

Perceptions of women, nurses, midwives and doctors about the use of video during birth to improve quality of care: focus group discussions.

The use of video during birth for quality of care was discussed in focus groups with women, nurses, midwives and doctors. Qualitative analysis revealed three categories of importance. First, goals and benefits: improving quality of care, teaching, research and legal issues are important potential applications. Second, limitations: concerns for privacy, fear of feedback and use of video in case of adverse events. Third, rules and regulations: goals and scope of the use of video need to be clearly described, access to video needs to be secured, and time until destruction needs to be specified. V

'We truly feel limited': nurses and midwives' perspectives on multi-level factors influencing women's adherence to ANC in Rwanda: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Antenatal care (ANC) is essential for improving maternal and neonatal health outcomes, yet adherence to ANC services remains a challenge in many low-income settings, including Rwanda. Understanding nurses and midwives' perspectives on factors influencing ANC adherence is crucial for developing targeted interventions to enhance service utilization and maternal health outcomes. METHODS: This study employed a qualitative descriptive design to explore the perspectives of nurses and midwives on ANC adherence in Rwanda. Fifteen in-depth interviews (IDIs) were conducted using a semi-stru

Views from midwives and perinatal nurses on barriers and facilitators in responding to perinatal intimate partner violence in Japan: baseline interview before intervention.

BACKGROUND: Midwives and perinatal nurses play a crucial role in responding to intimate partner violence (IPV) against pregnant women; however, these roles are often not performed adequately. This study aimed to identify provider-related, healthcare system, and social barriers and facilitators to IPV response from the perspective of midwives and perinatal nurses. METHODS: This qualitative descriptive study used semi-structured interviews with five midwives and a nurse from perinatal care facilities in Tokyo, Japan. A framework approach was employed to analyze the interview transcripts. RESUL

Utilization of technology to provide on-the-job trainings on Emergency Obstetric and Neonatal Care: Perspectives of nurses and midwives working in Rwanda's remote health facilities.

INTRODUCTION: One of the targets for the third sustainable development goals is to reduce worldwide maternal mortality ratio (MMR) to less than 70 deaths per 100,000 live births by 2030. To address issues affecting women and the newborns during childbirth and postnatal period, concerted efforts from governments and their stakeholders are crucial to maximize the use of technology to enhance frontline health professionals' skills to provide the emergency obstetric and newborn care (EmONC). However, no study has garnered nurses' and midwives' perspectives regarding the application of technology-e

"…We never considered it important…": a qualitative study on perceived barriers on use of non-pharmacological methods in management of labour pain by nurse-midwives in eastern Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: A significant number of women experience labour without effective pain management and thus suffer from unbearable labour pain to the extent they term labour as the most agonizing event in their lives. Unresolved labour pain can lead to stress, fear, and confusion, which may compromise placental perfusion and lead to birth asphyxia. Although various pharmacological and non-pharmacological labour pain management methods exist, the use of non-pharmacological methods (NPMs) to manage labour pain has remained low in low-resource settings. This paper explored the barriers for using NPMs

Association of knowledge and observed skills with self-reported readiness of nurses and midwives to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation in a tertiary hospital in Ghana: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a critical emergency intervention, yet evidence on CPR competence and readiness among nurses and midwives in Ghana is limited. This study assessed CPR knowledge, observed skills, self-reported readiness, and factors associated with readiness in a tertiary hospital. METHODS: An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted among nurses and midwives in critical and emergency care units. Of 331 eligible staff, 271 participated (81.9% response rate). Knowledge was assessed using a structured test, skills were observed on a manikin using a 12-ite
