The Nurse as an Early Warning System: A Longitudinal Surveillance Model in Pediatric Transplantation.

Posttransplant complications in pediatric patients, including rejection, infection, drug toxicity, and nonadherence, are still frequently identified at a late stage, when biomarkers have already changed and clinically meaningful harm to the graft or the patient may already be established. Current follow-up models remain overly dependent on laboratory tests, episodic visits, and reactive responses to overt deterioration, while underrecognizing subtle clinical signals perceived by nurses and caregivers over time. This viewpoint proposes the Nurse-as-Sensor Framework, in which nurses act as clini

Interdisciplinary management and anesthetic nursing care for a pediatric patient with epidermolysis bullosa.

Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) is a rare disease characterized by the formation of blisters and vesicles on the skin and mucous membranes. There are 4 types: simple, junctional, dystrophic, and Kindler syndrome. They can have serious complications such as difficult airway, syndactyly, wound superinfection, or squamous cell carcinoma. We present the case of a 6-year-old male patient with severe generalized recessive dystrophic EB, surgically intervened for syndactyly in the left upper limb and cures in both lower limbs. These patients have a high risk of suffering adverse events related to the surg

Referring Provider Opinions of Pediatric Cardiology Evaluations Performed by Nurse Practitioners.

In the setting of physician shortages, nurse practitioner (NP) roles have evolved, with increasing independence across most healthcare settings. We sought to characterize referring clinician perceptions of NP-performed outpatient pediatric cardiology consultations. We electronically distributed to pediatric and family medicine physicians and NPs in Arkansas our 11-item survey assessing the acceptability of pediatric cardiology consultations being completed by an NP under varying circumstances. Circumstances included seven common referral indications, and the scale offered five answer choices r

Pediatric PCA: the role of concurrent opioid infusions and nurse-controlled analgesia.

OBJECTIVES: We designed a clinical study to determine: a) the safety and efficacy of patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) therapy in children and adolescents undergoing major operations, b) if the use of a concurrent opioid infusion improved the efficacy of conventional PCA therapy, and c) if nurse control of the PCA device was a useful alternative in the intensive care unit (ICU) setting. DESIGN: Subjects were randomly assigned to receive morphine sulfate for postoperative pain relief via intermittent PCA boluses on demand or PCA plus a continuous infusion (PCA + CI). Children (n = 12) who wer

Type A behavior in children: what a pediatric nurse practitioner needs to know.

Type A behavior has been shown in adults to be a predictor of heart disease equal in magnitude to cigarette smoking and cholesterol level. This article reviews current thinking on Type A behavior and its relationship to cardiovascular health. Particular emphasis is given to current literature about Type A behavior in adolescents, school-aged children, and preschoolers. Discussion covers the importance of the primary subcomponents of Type A behavior (i.e., competitiveness, hostility, and impatience). Clinical cautions and applications of this research are included.

Nursing insights into the management of procedural pain in pediatric patients: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Understanding how nurses perceive, assess, interpret, and manage procedure-related pain in pediatric patients is key to improving the quality of care. This study aimed to explore how pediatric nurses interpret pain-related cues during painful procedures and how these interpretations guide their clinical judgments and management decisions, within the real-world context of their everyday practice. METHODS: A qualitative case study was conducted using in-depth interviews with pediatric nurses at a hospital in northern Spain between January and June 2025. Data were analyzed using indu

Pediatric Measles Resurgence: Implications for Acute and Critical Care Nursing Practice.

BACKGROUND: The United States declared endemic measles eliminated in 2000. However, outbreaks continued, with resurgences in 2019 and 2025. In 2025, more than 2200 cases across 48 outbreaks, the most since 1992, were reported. In the first half of 2026, 2073 cases were reported. Declining measles, mumps, and rubella vaccination rates have increased susceptibility among children. Acute and critical care nurses are central to early recognition and management of measles for optimal outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To summarize current evidence on measles epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical presentation,

Effect of educational strategies to develop nursing students' skills in pediatric procedures.

BACKGROUND: Training nursing students on different pediatric nursing procedures by interactive learning methods prior to their dealing with children can ensure providing them with an adequate knowledge base and skills. There is a gap between theory and clinical practice. One of the methods proposed to block the gap between training and clinical practice is to transform traditional education systems into new method-based learning. The study aims to determine the effectiveness of simulation, blended, and self-directed learning methods on nursing students' skills in some pediatric nursing procedu

Nurse-Performed Bladder Ultrasound Effect on Pediatric Bladder Catheterization Success.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Bladder catheterization (BC) is a routine procedure, but unsuccessful attempts due to inadequate bladder volume are common and stressful for children and caregivers. Physician-performed bladder point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) improves BC success rates, but the effect of nurse-performed POCUS remains understudied. METHODS: We randomized children under 24 months of age to receive either nurse-performed POCUS before BC or standard blind BC in the pediatric emergency department to compare dry catheterization rates. A simplified POCUS technique using a single bladder me

Simulation for Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists: Common Pediatric Anesthesia Complications.

Student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNAs) are required by the Council on Accreditation to provide anesthetics to a minimum of 30 patients ages 2-12 years and 10 patients younger than 2 years. Pediatric anesthesia can prove to be stressful because children are at higher risk for morbidity and mortality during the perioperative period compared with adults. Simulation allows SRNAs the opportunity to review and develop skills in a safe and supportive environment. The purpose of this project was to provide a high-fidelity pediatric simulation for SRNAs prior to their pediatric rotation to impro
