Regional Pediatric Education and Assistance Collaborative for Hospice Nurses (REACH): A Tele-Educational Intervention.

Despite the well-known benefits of hospice care for seriously ill children and their families, pediatric hospice services remain difficult to access across community settings. The vast majority of hospice organizations utilize an adult-focused paradigm, in which adult-trained providers often lack the requisite pediatric-specific education to provide high-quality hospice care for children and families. Hospice nurses self-report significant discomfort with pediatric care provision, resulting in hesitation by hospice agencies to accept pediatric patients, further exacerbating deficits in pediatr

INVOLUNTARY CHILDLESSNESS AND ASSISTED CONCEPTION: PERCEPTION AMONGST NURSES AT THE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE HOSPITAL, IBADAN.

INTRODUCTION: Involuntary childlessness, a pas de deux is perceived as a stigma in many developing countries and often leads to marital disharmony due to the high premium placed on childbearing emanating from deep rooted socio-cultural beliefs. Nurses play a pivotal role in patient management due to their close contact and association with patients and their relatives. A nexus therefore exists in the uptake of clinical services by patients because of the disposition of nurses towards certain services. Efforts at improving perception about assisted conception services through education and info

Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, and Physicians Are Comparable in Managing the First Five Years of Diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Increasing use of nurse practitioners and physician assistants is a possible solution to the shortage of primary care providers in the United States, but the quality of care they provide is not well understood. METHODS: Because the scope of practice of the 3 provider types is similar in the Veterans Health Administration, we determined whether patients managed by primary care nurse practitioners, physician assistants, or physicians had similar hemoglobin A1c levels at comparable times in the natural history of diabetes. Our retrospective cohort study examined veterans with newly d

The operationalisation of religion and world view in surveys of nurses' attitudes toward euthanasia and assisted suicide.

Most quantitative studies that survey nurses' attitudes toward euthanasia and/or assisted suicide, also attempt to assess the influence of religion on these attitudes. We wanted to evaluate the operationalisation of religion and world view in these surveys. In the Pubmed database we searched for relevant articles published before August 2008 using combinations of search terms. Twenty-eight relevant articles were found. In five surveys nurses were directly asked whether religious beliefs, religious practices and/or ideological convictions influenced their attitudes, or the respondents were requ

The Invisible Human-in-the-Loop: An Evolutionary Concept Analysis of Artificial Intelligence in Nursing Assistant Practice.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly entering long-term care (LTC) environments, but its significance for the workforce performing the vast majority of hands-on care tasks, certified nursing assistants (CNAs), remains unclear. CNAs remain underrepresented in the literature on AI in nursing, which has focused on registered nurses (RNs) as clinical decision-makers. The missing element inhibits the conceptualization process and thus the research, teaching, and policymaking processes. To define this concept in the age of generative AI, this paper conducts a concept analysis using Rodgers' evolu…

Hepatic encephalopathy in patients with cirrhosis: Key clinical considerations for the nurse practitioner and physician assistant.

BACKGROUND: Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a common neurocognitive cirrhosis-related complication with a broad range of symptoms. Timely recognition and treatment of HE, including identifying precipitating factors, when possible, is critical for improving outcomes in patients with cirrhosis. Lactulose and rifaximin therapies, as appropriate, are recommended for patients with cirrhosis and a history of HE episode(s) to reduce risk of HE recurrence. OBJECTIVES: To provide clinical considerations for nurse practitioners and physician assistants (PAs) on the diagnosis and management of patients w

Managing Acute Seizures: New Rescue Delivery Option and Resources to Assist School Nurses.

Approximately 470,000 children and adolescents in the United States have epilepsy, 30% of whom experience seizures despite antiseizure drug regimens. School nurses, teachers, caregivers, and parents play integral roles in implementing a care plan that avoids triggers, recognizes signs, and provides supportive care-ideally, guided by a patient-specific seizure action plan, which may include the use of rescue medication. Benzodiazepines are the mainstay of seizure rescue medication; for decades, rectally administered diazepam was the only approved rescue medication for seizure clusters outside t

Stopping Eating and Drinking by Advance Directives (SED by AD) in Assisted Living and Nursing Homes.

The Ethics Subcommittee of AMDA-The Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine ("The Society") presents arguments for and against Stopping Eating and Drinking by Advance Directives (SED by AD). SED by AD is a type of advance directive in which a proxy is instructed to stop offering food and fluids to a person when they reach a certain stage of dementia. Although most conversations regarding SED by AD focus on patient autonomy and the right to determine one's care, we propose that the ethical principle of justice-the obligation to treat all individuals equally regardless of race, gender

[Training modules on climate change, heat, and health for medical assistants and nurses in outpatient care].

The number of heatwaves is going to increase due to climate change and will pose a high health risk especially for elderly people. Additional risk factors like immobility, the need for care, chronic and acute diseases (worsening of symptoms), and the intake of medications lead to an increased sensitivity to heat in this particular age group. Nursing staff and medical assistants working in general practices are two important professions to reach the risk group during heatwaves and provide preventive and curative care. The "Klinikum der Universität München" has developed an interprofessional blen

Euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide in cases of terminal cancer: the opinions of physicians and nurses in Greece.

The aim of this study was to investigate the opinions of physicians and nurses on euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide in advanced cancer patients in Greece. Two hundred and fifteen physicians and 250 nurses from various hospitals in Greece completed a questionnaire concerning issues on euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide. More physicians (43.3%) than nurses (3.2%, p < 0.0005) reported that in the case of a cardiac or respiratory arrest, they would not attempt to revive a terminally ill cancer patient. Only 1.9% of physicians and 3.6% of nurses agreed on physician-assisted suicide.
