The role of nutrition in the etiology of inflammatory bowel disease.

Many foods have been implicated in theories about the etiology of inflammatory bowel disease. While evidence has accumulated that nutritional factors as part of overall lifestyle changes may play a role in the growing incidence, no specific dietary recommendations except the promotion of breastfeeding can currently be given to decrease the risk of developing Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis. For the treatment of Crohn's disease in children and adolescents, however, enteral feeding with a semi-elemental diet seems to be as effective as corticosteroids in inducing and maintaining remission.

Micronutrients in polycystic ovary syndrome: molecular pathways, deficiencies, and therapeutic potential.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) represents a complex endocrine-metabolic condition which presents with hyperandrogenism and anovulation together with insulin resistance and chronic low-grade inflammation affecting 21% of women during their reproductive years globally. Nutrition has always played a pivotal role in managing PCOS. Emerging evidence demonstrates that micronutrients play an essential part in regulating molecular processes that drive the pathophysiology of PCOS. The deficiency of micronutrients exacerbates insulin resistance, oxidative stress and hormonal dysregulation through thei

Dietary Modulation of microRNAs as a Potential Nutritional Strategy in Inflammatory and Autoimmune Skin Diseases: A Narrative Review.

Inflammatory and autoimmune skin diseases like psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and hidradenitis suppurativa present significant therapeutic challenges due to their complex immunological and environmental pathogenesis. This review highlights the critical role of microRNAs (miRNAs) as epigenetic regulators of inflammatory processes and investigates the potential of nutrigenomics to modulate their expression. Bioactive dietary components-including polyphenols such as quercetin, resveratrol, and curcumin, alongside vitamins C and D, selenium, and omega-3 fatty acids-demonstrate the ability to alter

Nutri-Epigenetic Regulation of Vitamin D-Impact on Metabolism and Biological Functions: Narrative Review.

Vitamin D deficiency is widespread. It increases the risk of several diseases. Therefore, researchers have long studied the factors that influence vitamin D levels in the body. These include its metabolism, catabolism, transport and binding of vitamin D to the receptor VDR. Currently, an increasing number of studies are focusing on genetic factors. Variations in vitamin D levels, including vitamin D deficiency, are under substantial genetic control. There is a reciprocity between the vitamin D system and epigenetic mechanisms. Vitamin D metabolism, on the one hand, is regulated by epigenetic m

Fanconi anaemia as a human model of accelerated epigenetic and immune ageing.

Fanconi anaemia (FA) is a DNA-repair disorder that compresses multiple hallmarks of ageing into childhood and early adulthood. Persistent genomic instability in FA precipitates oxidative stress, inflammatory remodelling, and metabolic reprogramming, which together erode epigenetic integrity and immune competence. Here we provide evidence FA-specific DNA-repair failure is linked to mitochondrial metabolism, nutrient-sensing networks, and immune dysfunction. In this context, we discuss how these interactions accelerate epigenetic drift and cancer susceptibility. We propose FA as a human "time-la

Photoperiod effects on corticosterone and seasonal clocks in cafeteria-induced obese fischer 344 rats are influenced by gut microbiota.

Seasonal rhythms are gaining attention given their impact on metabolic disorders development such as obesity gut microbiota is emerging as a key factor in mediating this link. However, the underlying mechanisms are still poorly understood. In this regard, corticosterone may play a role as it has been shown to be affected by gut bacteria and seasonal rhythms, and has been linked to obesity. Thus, this study aimed to investigate if seasonal rhythms effects on corticosterone are influenced by gut microbiota in obese rats and whether this may be related to seasonal and clock genes expression in th

Cellular Solutions: Evaluating Single-Cell Proteins as Sustainable Feed Alternatives in Aquaculture.

The rapid expansion of the global population has intensified the demand for protein-rich food sources, positioning aquaculture as a crucial sector in the endeavor to alleviate global hunger through the provision of high-quality aquatic protein. Traditional protein sources such as fishmeal have historically served as the foundation of aquafeeds; however, their elevated costs and limited availability have catalyzed the search for sustainable alternatives. These alternatives encompass plant-based proteins, insect meals, and, more recently, single-cell proteins (SCPs), which are derived from micro

Dietary, macronutrient, micronutrient, and nutrigenetic factors impacting cardiovascular risk markers apolipoprotein B and apolipoprotein A1: a narrative review.

Genetic predisposition and dietary factors can impact cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Two important markers in assessing CVD risk are apolipoprotein (apo) B and apolipoprotein A1 plasma levels. These markers are measured as a ratio, with a high apoB:apoA1 ratio associated with increased CVD risk. Dietary and lifestyle recommendations are the cornerstone of managing primary and secondary CVD risk-mitigation strategies. One way to assess the impact of various dietary and lifestyle interventions on CVD risk is to evaluate the changes in CVD risk markers, such as apoB, apoA1, and apoB:apoA1 rat

Update on genetics of postprandial lipemia.

The relationship between alimentary lipemia and coronary disease is of great interest in view of the epidemiological and experimental evidence that underlies it. The modulation of such phenomena is influenced by both genetic and environmental factors, thus explaining their extraordinary individual variance. Over the last two decades there has been an explosion of research in this area, with often conflicting findings reported in the literature. In this study we have presented the current evidence linking a number of candidate genes (APOA1/C3/A4/A5 cluster, ABCA1, CETP, GCKR, HL, IL-6, LPL, PLI

Vitamin D receptor gene polymorphism and vitamin D supplementation on clinical/ treatment outcome in tuberculosis: current and future perspectives.

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis (TB) is a transnational public health concern, which requires more precise treatment strategies than the existing approaches. Vitamin D modulates the inflammatory and immune response to the disease. Robust evidence shows that vitamin D deficiency and its receptor gene polymorphism influence the susceptibility to TB and the outcome of the anti-tubercular treatment (ATT). However, in the different populations, these findings were inconsistent and even contradictory. AREAS COVERED: The current review focuses on the association between vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene poly

[Impact of apolipoprotein A5 on cardiovascular risk. Genetic and environmental modulation].

Triglyceride concentrations are an independent risk factor for coronary heart disease. Apolipoprotein A5 gene (APOAS) has an important role determining triglyceride metabolism and it is a potential cardiovascular risk. However the mechanisms for these actions are not well-known. Despite the different allelic frequency of its major polymorphisms in different populations, multiple studies have shown consistent associations between these variants and fasting triglycerides. Variations in the APOA5 gene have also been associated with postprandial triglycerides, as well as with different sizes of li

Personalized Nutrition: Are We There Yet?

The human genome has been proposed to contribute to interpersonal variability in the way we respond to nutritional intake. However, personalized diets solely based on gene-nutrient interactions have not lived up to their expectations to date. Advances in microbiome research have indicated that a science-based generation of a personalized diet based on a combination of clinical and microbial features may constitute a promising new approach enabling accurate prediction of dietary responses. In addition, scientific advances in our understanding of defined dietary components and their effects on h

Mushroom intolerance: a novel diet-gene interaction in Crohn's disease.

Carrying a functional single nucleotide polymorphism (L503F, c. 1672 C>T) in the gene for the Na-dependent organic cation transporter (OCTN1), increases the risk of Crohn's disease (CD) in some, but not all, populations. Case-control data on New Zealand Caucasians show no differences for CD risk between individuals carrying the L503F OCTN1 C-allele when compared with those carrying the variant T-allele. However, more of the New Zealand CD cases report intolerance to maize and mushrooms than those who report beneficial effects or no differences. The OCTN1 gene encodes a transporter for ergothio

How the Intake of Pulses May Impact Metabolic Disorders and Dementia Risk: A Narrative Review.

We present a narrative review focusing on pulses' geographical origin and distribution, their impact on human evolution and history, and their influence on human health. Pulses, including dry peas, beans, and lentils, are renowned for their richness in chemical antioxidants. Despite containing antinutrients, processing techniques preserve their health advantages. Epidemiological research has consistently demonstrated that the consumption of pulses is associated with favorable effects on metabolism. This evidence is further supported by molecular and clinical research, which has elucidated pote

Micronutrient (Zn, Cu, Fe)-gene interactions in ageing and inflammatory age-related diseases: implications for treatments.

In ageing, alterations in inflammatory/immune response and antioxidant capacity lead to increased susceptibility to diseases and loss of mobility and agility. Various essential micronutrients in the diet are involved in age-altered biological functions. Micronutrients (zinc, copper, iron) play a pivotal role either in maintaining and reinforcing the immune and antioxidant performances or in affecting the complex network of genes (nutrigenomic approach) involved in encoding proteins for a correct inflammatory/immune response. By the other side, the genetic inter-individual variability may affec
