[Development of Multimodal Intervention in Cancer Cachexia].

Cancer cachexia is a combination of metabolic abnormalities associated with malignancy and symptoms that interfere with eating behavior and physical activity, resulting in weight loss. A multimodal treatment proven to be safe and effective has yet to be established. However, with the approval of anamorelin hydrochloride, clinical studies are underway to combine pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment. It is important to build a multidisciplinary team that includes nutritionists, physiotherapists, physicians, nurses, and psychotherapists, each with a clearly defined role. This also re

Phenylketonuria, adolescence, and diet.

The decision to continue treatment for phenylketonuria (PKU) patients into adolescence and adulthood presents a challenge to nutritionists and other professionals who must motivate patients to maintain the diet and give them support. Nutrition needs must be assessed and then met by commercial low-phenylalanine formula and low-protein foods, while at the same time the amount of phenylalanine in the diet is severely limited. Combinations of products can be used to tailor the diet to individual needs, e.g., weight reduction. The objective is to allow the intellectually normal PKU patient to devel

Bariatric Nutrition Guidelines for the Indian Population.

BACKGROUND: Bariatric surgery numbers have seen a sharp rise in India in the last decade. A country known for its undernourished population has seen economic growth and with it, greater influence of western culture and foods. The obesity epidemic is on the rise here and India is one of the 10 most obese nations of the world being second only to China in the number of type 2 diabetes. Nutritionists in India often rely on recommendations and guidelines meant for the Caucasian population. Religious and cultural practices influence the dietary habits and patterns of the Indian population to a grea

Impact of COVID-19 on childhood obesity: Data from a paediatric weight management trial.

There is growing concern that the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is exacerbating childhood obesity. We sought to examine the effects of the pandemic on weight and weight-related behaviours among children with overweight and obesity participating in an ongoing cluster randomized controlled trial of a paediatric practice-based weight intervention with 2 study arms: nutritionist-delivered coaching telephone calls over 8 weeks with an accompanying workbook on lifestyle changes versus the same workbook in eight mailings without nutritionist coaching calls. Nutrition in Children With Chronic Kidney Disease: How to Thrive?

The nutritional status and management of children with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are complex and require a combined pediatric nephrology team work approach with physicians, nutritionists, nurses, and physical/occupational therapists. Prospective observational studies such as Children with CKD in the US, the 4C study in Europe and the International Pediatric Peritoneal Dialysis Network have advanced the field. However, most recommendations and guidelines from international task forces such as Kidney Diseases Improving Global Outcomes and Pediatric Renal Nutrition Taskforce are opinion-based

A case of squamous cell lung cancer treated with anamorelin in combination with a multidisciplinary collaborative approach for treating cancer cachexia.

Anamorelin (ANA) is approved for treating cancer cachexia (CCX) in Japan. We report the case of a 69-year-old man with stage IVB squamous cell lung cancer complicated by CCX, having a 13.6% weight loss in 6 months. After chemotherapy was initiated, his weight was further reduced. Therefore, we started ANA combined with a treatment approach by a multidisciplinary collaboration, including nutritionists and physical therapists. After initiation of ANA, the body weight, appetite, psoas muscle index, and physical functions rapidly improved during chemotherapy. ANA administration combined with a mul

Can dietitians reliably measure muscle mass with ultrasound compared to 'expert' clinicians and what sort of training is required?A narrative review.

OBJECTIVES: Sarcopenia and malnutrition have detrimental health related outcomes not limited to falls, weakness, fractures, increased hospital length of stay, increased risk of infections, morbidity and mortality. Ultrasound is an establishing imaging modality that can be utilized at point-of care to measure muscle mass and quality. It is cheaper, less invasive, and more accessible than other gold-standard measurements of muscle mass. It is proposed that dietitians can utilize this measurement in clinical practice to support both diagnosis and monitoring of malnutrition and sarcopenia, however

Associations between Shokuiku during School Years, Well-Balanced Diets, and Eating and Lifestyle Behaviours in Japanese Females Enrolled in a University Registered Dietitian Course.

This study comprehensively examined the associations between shokuiku (food and nutrition education) during school years, current well-balanced diets, and current eating and lifestyle behaviours of Japanese female university students. A hypothetical model was developed using factors potentially associated with well-balanced diets. A simultaneous multipopulational analysis was performed according to the living arrangements of 148 female Japanese students (48.6% living alone) from a registered dietitian course. The analysis showed acceptable goodness of fit and a significant positive path from s

Dietary assessments in individuals living with coeliac disease: key considerations.

BACKGROUND: Coeliac disease (CeD) is a type of enteropathy characterised by an immune-mediated reaction to ingested gluten, resulting in impaired absorption of nutrients and symptoms such as bloating, abdominal cramping and diarrhoea. Currently, the only treatment for CeD is adherence to a gluten-free diet (GFD). The latest draft guidance from the US Food and Drug Administration recommends that dietitians experienced in CeD management evaluate patients during the screening and treatment period of CeD clinical trials to assess adherence to a GFD. However, there are currently no standardised gui

[Nutritional education protocol in the treatment of eating disorders in the clinical and care settings].

Nutrition education (NE), as part of the treatment of eating disorders (EDs), plays a crucial role in helping patients to change their food attitudes and routines, lose fears, and recover a healthy eating pattern. All these changes may contribute to improving their nutritional status. However, there is a lack of consensus and standardization concerning the procedures to teach it. This work's objective was to elaborate a consensual protocol for NE implementation in the treatment of EDs to help in decision-making regarding which patients are appropriate candidates to receive NE, the agents (fami

The Role of Nutrition in Managing Muscle Disorders.

Many myopathies in horses can be managed by exercise regimes and dietary modifications. This includes modifying the amount of nonstructural carbohydrate, fat, amino acids, vitamin E, and selenium based on the horse's specific myopathy, metabolic status, exercise program, and optimal body weight. Because dietary recommendations differ substantially between myopathies, it is imperative to establish a specific diagnosis. A nutritionist will help practitioners select from the myriad of offered products to ensure a balanced diet. This article provides detailed recommendations for a variety of myopa

Short Bowel Syndrome in an Infant.

Short bowel syndrome (SBS) is a malabsorptive state that may occur either after surgical bowel resection or as the result of congenital bowel anomalies. SBS can incur significant morbidity and mortality including intestinal failure, cholestasis, sepsis, and death. For patients with SBS, management involves a multidisciplinary approach that begins with neonatology, pediatric surgery, nutritionists, pharmacists, and nurses in the NICU and also includes the transition to an intestinal rehabilitation program. The aim of this review is to provide the neonatologist with an overview of the common cau

Introduction: Prison foodways. International and multidisciplinary perspectives.

The role of prison food for those in custody has long been either underestimated, or a narrow subject approached from the vantage point of nutritionists. This special issue on prison food, tackles extant knowledge gaps by highlighting the scope of interdisciplinary scholarship, and studies of prison foodways that operate at the intersection of several disciplines. As an introduction to this special issue, we highlight the symbolic role of food as an underestimated feature of the prison environment. For many prisoners, the restrictive detention conditions give food a greater significance than i
