Borrelia burgdorferi, the spirochete that causes Lyme disease, is endemic and widespread in Wisconsin. Research in the northeastern United States has revealed a positive association between Babesia microti, the main pathogen that causes babesiosis in humans, and Bo. burgdorferi in humans and in ticks. This study was conducted to examine associations between the disease agents in the Upper midwestern United States. Ixodes scapularis Say nymphs (N = 2,858) collected between 2015 and 2017 from nine locations in Wisconsin were tested for Babesia spp. and Borrelia spp. using real-time PCR. Two spec

Chagas disease is caused by Trypanosoma cruzi. Vector survival is an important variable affecting vectorial capacity to determine parasite transmission risk. The aims of this study are to evaluate vector survival under fasting/starvation conditions of wild-caught Mepraia spinolai after feeding and fasting, the pathogenicity of T. cruzi infection, the parasite burden and seasonal variation in parasite discrete typing units (DTU). The survivorship of M. spinolai nymphs after two continuous artificial feedings was evaluated, assessing their infection with microscopic observation of fecal samples

Animal behavior can have profound effects on pathogen transmission and disease incidence. We studied the questing (= host-seeking) behavior of blacklegged tick (Ixodes scapularis) nymphs, which are the primary vectors of Lyme disease in the eastern United States. Lyme disease is common in northern but not in southern regions, and prior ecological studies have found that standard methods used to collect host-seeking nymphs in northern regions are unsuccessful in the south. This led us to hypothesize that there are behavior differences between northern and southern nymphs that alter how readily

Ticks of the Ixodes ricinus complex are the primary vectors of Borrelia burgdorferi (sensu lato), the complex of genospecies that cause Lyme borreliosis, in Europe and North America. We summarized the tick surveillance data of host-seeking I. ricinus nymphs in Europe between 1999 and 2022 to quantify and map the occurrence and B. burgdorferi (s.l.) genospecies infection prevalence (NIP) across the continent in high resolution. Geocoordinates or reported subnational administrative units were extracted where tick surveillance data were collected and validated with previous systematic literature

Ticks and tick-borne diseases are of increasing concern across the United States, particularly in the Northeast. Ixodes scapularis Say (Ixodida: Ixodidae) remains the primary vector for the Lyme disease spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi (Johnson, Schmid, Hyde, Steigerwalt, and Brenner). Prior studies established that I. scapularis can be found in greatest abundance in the 1-m forested ecotone surrounding the lawn edge in residential backyards. Our study was conducted on 42 properties in Guilford, CT, and sought to expand upon this premise by determining which key habitat features were associate

The necropsy of an adult male leopard, Panthera pardus, shot in the Kruger National Park, revealed the presence of large numbers of Armillifer armillatus nymphs in the intestine, liver, spleen, mesentery, peritoneal fold, mediastinum and lungs. The animal had been observed to be blind in the right eye and severely debilitated. The infection with A. armillatus clearly contributed to its emaciation and anaemia. Armillifer armillatus is a parasite of snakes, using mammals that form part of the snakes' prey as intermediate hosts. It is also one of the pentastomids with the highest zoonotic potenti

Changes in the structure of managed red pine forests in Wisconsin caused by interacting root- and stem-colonizing insects are associated with increased abundance of the blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis Say, in comparison with nonimpacted stands. However, the frequency and variability of the occurrence of tick-borne pathogens in this coniferous forest type across Wisconsin is unknown. Red pine forests were surveyed from 2009 to 2013 to determine the prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi and Anaplasma phagocytophilum in questing I. scapularis nymphs. Polymerase chain reaction analysis revealed g

In the far-western United States, the bacteria that cause Lyme disease (Borrelia burgdorferi, Bb) and human granulocytic anaplasmosis (Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Ap) are transmitted by the western black-legged tick (Ixodes pacificus). In a dense woodland, human behaviors involving contact with wood were recently found to pose greater risk for encountering I. pacificus nymphs than behaviors entailing exclusive exposure to leaf litter. A four-year follow-up study was undertaken in the same woodland and, as a comparison area in one year only, in a nearby woodland-grass habitat to explore the biot

The Asian citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri, is the primary vector of Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus, the causative agent of citrus greening disease, which continues to threaten citrus production worldwide. Current management relies heavily on chemical insecticides, despite increasing concerns regarding resistance and environmental impacts. Because pathogen acquisition is most efficient during the nymphal stage, management strategies targeting immature psyllids may improve disease suppression. Although bacterial pesticidal proteins (BPP) have generally shown limited activity against D. citri

Phytoplasmas are specialized small bacteria restricted to the phloem tissue and spread by hemipterans feeding on plant sieve tube elements. As for many other plant pathogens, it is known that phytoplasmas alter the chemistry of their hosts. Most research on phytoplasma-plant interactions focused on the induction of plant volatiles and phytohormones. Little is known about the influence of phytoplasma infections on the nutritional composition of phloem and consequences on vector behavior and development. The plum psyllid Cacopsylla pruni transmits 'Candidatus Phytoplasma prunorum', the causing a

Ixodids suck blood from host animals and transmit pathogens that cause important medical and veterinary diseases. As synthetic conventional acaricide resistance becomes increasingly common, alternative tactics are likely to enhance control efforts. Laboratory bioassays assessed the lethality of CimeXa, a commercial silica gel desiccant dust, and EcoVia, a commercial product containing silica gel + thyme oil, against lone star tick, Amblyomma americanum (L.), larvae and nymphs. Both life stages were completely killed by CimeXa by 24 h, and EcoVia achieved total larval mortality within 1 h when

BackgroundTick-borne diseases have become increasingly common in recent decades and present a health problem in many parts of Europe. Control and prevention of these diseases require a better understanding of vector distribution.AimOur aim was to create a model able to predict the distribution of Ixodes ricinus nymphs in southern Scandinavia and to assess how this relates to risk of human exposure.MethodsWe measured the presence of I. ricinus tick nymphs at 159 stratified random lowland forest and meadow sites in Denmark, Norway and Sweden by dragging 400 m transects from August to September 2

The majority of vector-borne disease cases reported annually in the United States are caused by pathogens spread by the blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis. The number and geographic distribution of cases have increased as the geographic range and abundance of the tick have expanded in recent decades. A large proportion of Lyme disease and other I. scapularis-borne diseases are associated with nymphal tick bites; likelihood of such bites generally increases with increasing nymphal densities. National tick surveillance was initiated in 2018 to track changes in the distribution and abundance of

The development of interventions that reduce Lyme disease incidence remains a challenge. Reservoir-targeted approaches aiming to reduce tick densities or tick infection prevalence with Borrelia burgdorferi have emerged as promising ways to reduce the density of infected ticks. Acaricides of the isoxazoline family offer high potential for reducing infestation of ticks on small mammals as they have high efficacy at killing feeding ticks for a long period. Fluralaner baits were recently demonstrated as effective, in the laboratory, at killing Ixodes scapularis larvae infesting Peromyscus mice, th

Lyme borreliosis, the most important vector-borne disease in the Northern hemisphere, causes health problem for populations in endemic areas. In the present study, the density of questing Ixodes ricinus ticks and their infection with Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (sl) was examined in 11 areas located on the Swiss Plateau and in an alpine valley. From 1999 to 2001, free-living I. ricinus ticks were collected on a monthly basis by flagging vegetation in these areas. Each tick was examined for the presence of B. burgdorferi sl using direct fluorescent antibody assay, and for isolation of the ba

Lyme disease, caused primarily by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto (s.s.), is the most prevalent vector-borne disease in the United States. Lyme disease spirochetes are maintained through enzootic cycles of pathogen transmission between vertebrate reservoir hosts and tick vectors. Reservoir host targeted strategies have been examined for their ability to disrupt enzootic transmission cycles of B. burgdoferi s.s. within natural environments in the eastern U.S. However, there are no studies in the western U.S. examining the effect of permethrin- and deltamethrin-based topical aca

Local knowledge of when humans are at elevated risk for exposure to tick vectors of human disease agents is required both for the effective use of personal protection measures to avoid tick bites and for implementation of control measures to suppress host-seeking ticks. Here, we used previously published data on the seasonal density of host-seeking Ixodes pacificus Cooley and Kohls nymphs, the primary vectors of Lyme disease spirochetes in the far western USA, collected across a broad habitat and climate gradient in northwestern California to identify predictors of periods of time within the y

The metamorphosis of tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV)-induced I. ricinus nymphs under long-day photoperiodic conditions (18 light hours and 6 darkness hours) occurs more rapidly than in uninfected specimens. The infected nymphs begin to develop to the imagoes 25-33 days earlier than do uninfected ones. The first imagoes from the infected nymphs emerge on day 24 after saturation whereas those from the uninfected nymphs appear on day 43. The interval from nymphal saturation to imago development in 50% specimens is 27.7 +/- 2.0 and 52.2 +/- 0.7 days, respectively. Reasons for geographical dif

The distribution of inorganic 109Cd(II), inorganic 203Hg(II), and [203Hg] methylmercury (MeHg) in nymphs of the burrowing mayfly Hexagenia rigida after exposure via water and sediments was studied. To better understand the mechanisms underlying the fate of Cd, Hg, and MeHg in this animal and to identify target organs, autoradiography of whole-body cryosections was used to obtain a detailed view of the distribution of the radiolabels. The gut and exoskeleton were the only structures labeled in nymphs exposed to Cd via water or sediments. After exposure to inorganic Hg via water, the Malpighian
