Impact of Depression on Weight Variation after Bariatric Surgery: A Three-Year Observational Study.

INTRODUCTION: The association between obesity and depression has been repeatedly established. However, little is known about the impact that the diagnosis of depression before bariatric surgery (DDBS) may have on weight loss. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of DDBS on weight outcomes. METHODS: Retrospective study of patients submitted to BS. Patients with no weight, no current medication data, or those submitted to revision surgery were excluded. Patients were considered to have DDBS based on taking antidepressants prior to BS or if there was a medical history of past or current depression

Patterns of regional variation of opioid prescribing in primary care in England: a retrospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Opioids are a widely prescribed class of drug with potentially harmful short-term and long-term side effects. There are concerns about the amounts of these drugs being prescribed in England given that they are increasingly considered ineffective in the context of long-term non-cancer pain, which is one of the major reasons for their prescription. AIM: To assess the amount and type of opioids prescribed in primary care in England, and patterns of regional variation in prescribing. DESIGN AND SETTING: Retrospective observational study using publicly available government data from v

Variation in antibiotic treatment for diabetic patients with serious foot infections: a retrospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic foot infections are common, serious, and diverse. There is uncertainty about optimal antibiotic treatment, and probably substantial variation in practice. Our aim was to document whether this is the case: A finding that would raise questions about the comparative cost-effectiveness of different regimens and also open the possibility of examining costs and outcomes to determine which should be preferred. METHODS: We used the Veterans Health Administration (VA) Diabetes Epidemiology Cohorts (DEpiC) database to conduct a retrospective observational study of hospitalized pati

Morphological Observation on Longidorus crassus Thorne, 1974 (Nematoda: Longidoridae) and Its Intraspecies Variation.

Longidorus crassus is a common species and widely distributed in Arkansas. It was also identified for the first time in samples from Alabama, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, South Carolina, Wisconsin, and Canada. It is a parthenogenetic species, but a few males were found and were described herein for the first time. Four developmental juvenile stages were identified. A high degree of intraspecies variation was observed among different populations of this species. Twenty-three populations of L. crassus found in Arkansas were studied for their variability using standard measurements, mean comparison, a

Prevalence and Surgical Implications of Cystic Artery Variations in Calot's Triangle: A Prospective Observational Study.

Background  Variations in the cystic artery within Calot's triangle are clinically significant during laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC), as unrecognized vascular anomalies may increase the risk of hemorrhage and bile duct injury. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and surgical implications of cystic artery variations in terms of origin, number, position, and location. Methods  This prospective observational study was conducted at Amar Hospital, Patiala, from 2023 to 2025 and included 100 patients undergoing LC. Intraoperative findings were recorded regarding cystic artery origin, numb

Exploring the variations of the pancreatic ductal system: a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies.

The exocrine part of the pancreas has a duct system called the pancreatic ductal system (PDS). Its mechanism of development is complex, and any reorganization during early embryogenesis can give rise to anatomical variants. The aim of this study is to collect, classify, and analyze published evidence on the importance of anatomical variants of the PDS, addressing gaps in our understanding of such variations. The MEDLINE, Web of Science, Embase, and Google Scholar databases were searched to identify publications relevant to this review. R studio with meta-package was used for data extraction, r

Double Muscular Thenar Branch and Anatomical Variation of Thenar Muscle Innervation Observed in a Cadaver.

The muscular thenar branch typically arises from the median nerve distal to the transverse carpal ligament and supplies the thenar musculature. In the present cadaveric case, the existence of double muscular thenar branches is described. The two nerves originated from the first common palmar digital nerve and gave off five terminal muscular branches. The proximal nerve supplied the abductor pollicis brevis (two branches) and the opponens pollicis (two branches) muscles, whereas the distal muscular thenar branch presented a loop and innervated the superficial head of flexor pollicis brevis musc

Cyclic variation of thickness in an age-related thick mitral valve observed by transthoracic echocardiography.

The cyclic variation of thickness during the cardiac cycle in age-related degenerative mitral valve (MV) has not been reported. Transthoracic echocardiography was used to evaluate the cyclic alteration in MV thickness in 40 patients with age-related MV thickening (diastolic MV thickness > or = 4 mm, age 70 +/- 14 years), 10 with mitral valve prolapse (MVP, age 49 +/- 11 years), 10 with rheumatic mitral stenosis (MS, age 66 +/- 9 years), and 31 control subjects (diastolic MV thickness < or = 3.6 mm, 53 +/- 17 years). After determination of the site of maximal thickness during diastole, the maxi

Observations on fibre diameter variation of sheep in relation to fleece-rot and body strike susceptibility.

A comparative study of various fleece properties known to influence fleece-rot susceptibility was made in a merino flock consisting of sheep which were found to be either resistant or susceptible to fleece-rot and body strike following heavy rains. The fleece properties measured were fibre diameter, fibre diameter, fibre diameter variation, wax content, suint content, wax to suint ratio, suint pH, insoluble nitrogen content, wool colour and wettability. Fibre diameter variation, due mainly to the presence of coarse, secondary fibres in the staple, was the only fleece property which differed si

Optical density variations and microscopic observations in the evaluation of platelet shape change and microaggregate formation.

Addition of Ristocetin to formalin-fixed platelets suspended in diluted PPP induces a marked increase in turbidity which is not caused by platelet shape change but by the formation of microaggregates. If diluted PPP of patients with severe von Willebrand's disease is used, only an initial increase in turbidity and no further decrease is observed without any form variation of the platelets but again with formation of many microaggregates. In normal PRP diluted with buffered EDTA, ADP induces an increase in turbidity without further changes in optical density. Simultaneously platelets immediatel

Toward a consensus on reference values for thyroid volume in iodine-replete schoolchildren: results of a workshop on inter-observer and inter-equipment variation in sonographic measurement of thyroid volume.

OBJECTIVE: Interpretation of thyroid ultrasonography for assessing goiter prevalence requires valid reference criteria from iodine-sufficient populations. Reports have suggested the current reference criteria for thyroid volume (T(vol)) of WHO/ICCIDD (International Council for the Control of Iodine Deficiency Disorders) may be too high. Our objective was to determine if inter-observer and/or inter-equipment variability contributes to the disagreement in sonographic T(vol) in children reported from iodine-sufficient areas. DESIGN: A 2-day workshop in which four experienced ultrasound examiners

Observer Variation in the Diagnosis of Testicular Sex Cord-Stromal Tumors by a Genitourinary Pathology Society and International Society of Urological Pathology Panel: Paving the Way for a New Classification.

The diagnosis of sex cord-stromal tumors is challenging. They show a wide spectrum of behaviors and associations with clinically important pathogenic germline variants. In view of recent advances in molecular subtyping and risk factors, we wished to investigate the differences in diagnosis for a range of these tumors using expert genitourinary pathologists with an interest in this area. Forty-four tumors were selected, and 18 pathologists (members of TEsticular Sex cord-Stromal Tumor group) were invited to view the cases online and give a diagnosis. Consensus was taken as 70% agreement. Consen
