If transmen can have babies, how will perinatal nursing adapt?

Reproductive technology has made it possible for those born biologically female and who have partially transitioned to the male gender via hormones to become pregnant and give birth. This article explores the role of the perinatal nurse in providing care during the obstetric experience for a transgender male and his significant other. A carefully executed plan of care can assist the nurse in providing nonjudgmental, nondiscriminatory physical and emotional nursing care, and ensure that the family's healthcare needs are met and that their transition into parenthood is effective.

[Study on the psychological character of pregnant women and nursing applications].

This study was conducted to explore the psychological character of healthy pregnant women. 81 four to ten months pregnant and 96 non pregnant women participated the study. SCL-90 was used to measure the psychological health state. The result showed that the average total and subtotal scores such as compulsion, sensitivity, stress, hostility, terror, obstinate, and psychiatric factor in pregnant women were obvious higher than in non pregnant women (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01). It indicated that pregnant women's psychological health state was not good. The major influencing factor was unhealthy charac

Intrapartum emergencies.

Intrapartum emergencies are challenging to all perinatal nurses because of the increased risk of adverse outcomes for the mother and fetus. Perinatal emergencies, such as seizures, amniotic fluid embolus, hemorrhage, and uterine rupture, create physiological challenges and trigger intrinsic survival techniques. The pregnant uterus becomes a vital source of blood volume during hypovolemic events because it is not considered a vital organ. The pregnancy itself may become burdensome, and birth may occur as an intrinsic maternal compensatory mechanism. The resultant fetal hypoxemia may also stress

Perinatal bereavement support service: three-year review.

Perinatal loss and grief have been recognized as a special form of loss in the last ten years. Perinatal death includes miscarriage, therapeutic abortion, stillbirth, and infant death shortly after birth. Acknowledgement of the death and support to mourn their loss by significant others promotes resolution of this bereavement. If perinatal bereavement is not resolved, one-quarter to one-third of mothers may go on to develop a clinical depression. A multidisciplinary Perinatal Support Service is in place at Women's College Hospital to provide grief counselling to the mother and her family who h

Perceived Health System Causes of Obstetric Fistula from Accounts of Affected Women in Rural Tanzania: A Qualitative Study.

Obstetric fistula is still a major problem in low income countries. While its main cause is untreated obstructed labour, misconceptions about it still persist. This study aimed at exploring and describing perceived health system causes of obstetric fistula from women affected by it in rural Tanzania. This exploratory qualitative study included twenty-eight women affected by obstetric fistula. Semi structured interviews and focus group discussions were held and thematic analysis used to analyse perceived health system causes of obstetric fistula from women's account. Perceived health system cau

Skin changes in geriatric nurses prior to training heralding a particular risk of hand dermatitis.

Irritant skin changes are a well known problem in nursing services. Especially geriatric nurses often complain of hand dermatitis, most likely induced by frequent washing and hand disinfections. In this cohort study, demographic data and skin changes from 521 nurse trainees were recorded. The data of geriatric nurse trainees (n = 149) were compared to that of other nurse trainees (n = 372), mostly of surgery, internal medicine, pediatric and obstetrics. Geriatric nurse trainees were significantly older and had noticeably severer irritant skin changes at the start of the training. Geriatric nur

[Assessment, delivery and peripartum care in the case of a uterine rupture during labor of a woman with a previous C-section].

Uterine rupture is a rare but severe complication in obstetrics. A previous C-section is the most important risk factor. Its incidence during labor in women with a previous C-section is of approximately 0.3-0.47%, being potentially severe. We present the case of a pregnant women with a previous C-section who suffered uterine rupture during labor. The rapid assessment and action of the midwife and obstetric team was essential to obtain a successful obstetric outcome, avoiding maternal and fetal mortality; and nursing care given to the mother and the newborn after birth contributed to achieving

Assessment and management of conjoined twins.

Although a rare anomaly, conjoined twins provide a unique challenge to the health care professional. At times, the ethical issues present difficult dilemmas for parents and hospital staff. An awareness of the moral dilemmas that tax the emotions of the most experienced hospital staff is the first step toward providing the appropriate support to these families. Nurses must have an understanding of the classification of conjoined twins and the preoperative and postoperative management. Additionally, awareness of the special needs of the family prior to discharge both before and after surgical se

ACOG Committee Opinion No. 474: nonobstetric surgery during pregnancy.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists' Committee on Obstetric Practice acknowledges that the issue of nonobstetric surgery during pregnancy is an important concern for physicians who care for women. It is important for a physician to obtain an obstetric consultation before performing nonobstetric surgery and some invasive procedures (eg, cardiac catheterization or colonoscopy) because obstetricians are uniquely qualified to discuss aspects of maternal physiology and anatomy that may affect intraoperative maternal-fetal well-being. Ultimately, each case warrants a team approac

Coexistence and prevalence of obstetric interventions: an analysis based on the grade of membership.

BACKGROUND: Obstetric interventions performed during delivery do not reflect improvements in obstetric care. Several practices routinely performed during childbirth, without any scientific evidence or basis - such as Kristeller maneuver, routine episiotomy, and movement or feeding restriction - reflect a disrespectful assistance reality that, unfortunately, remains in place in Brazil. The aims of the current study are to assess the coexistence and prevalence of obstetric interventions in maternity hospitals in Belo Horizonte City, based on the Grade of Membership (GoM) method, as well as to in

The power to terrify: eclampsia in 19th-century American practice.

Throughout the 19th century, eclampsia was among the most dreaded complications of pregnancy. Conflicts arose over proposed etiologies and therapeutic modalities. Bloodletting and other harsh therapies reflected the prevailing humoral, neurovascular, and toxicologic theories. The role of untrained and professional nurses in the lying-in room of an eclamptic woman emerges from the literature of the time. An appreciation of the history of eclampsia provides context for the modern obstetric nurse.
