Due to the threat of colorectal cancer (CRC) to health, Taiwan included the fecal occult blood test (FOBT) under preventive health services in 2010. We examined the factors that affect the diagnosis of people with positive FOBT results. Data were retrospectively collected from the CRC screening database. In the model predicting factors that affect the diagnosis of 89,046 people with positive FOBT results, the risks of disease in the CRC group were lower in medical institutions that conducted follow-up examinations in regions such as Northern Taiwan compared to that in Eastern Taiwan (p = 0.013

BACKGROUND: Early detection of colorectal cancer could reduce cancer-specific mortality. The aim of this trial was to evaluate the effect of faecal occult blood test (FOBT) screening on colorectal cancer mortality in a Swedish population.
METHODS: All 68,308 citizens in Göteborg born between 1918 and 1931 were randomized to a screening or a control group at the age of 60-64 years. All were screened two to three times with rehydrated Hemoccult-II. Compliance was 70.0 per cent (23,916 individuals). Those with a positive test result were offered sigmoidoscopy and a double-contrast enema. The pri

OBJECTIVE: The factors that influence the decision to do an adequate evaluation for a positive test for fecal occult blood in a middle-aged or elderly patient are largely unknown. Our study was undertaken to determine whether factors such as the number of positive Hemoccult II card windows, age, gender, family history of colon cancer, the patient's concern that he or she might have colon cancer, or history of rectal bleeding influence the evaluation performed.
METHOD: A mass screening program for colon cancer was performed using unrehydrated Hemoccult II cards in the Boston area.
RESULTS: Am

Patients with abdominal pain and no definite diagnosis referred for endoscopy were studied to define discriminating features in the history, and the value of a stool occult blood test, in predicting the presence of upper gastrointestinal disease. Endoscopy was performed in 116 patients; pathology was seen in 32 (duodenal ulcer 17, gastric carcinoma 4, gastric ulcer 3, miscellaneous 8) and no pathology was seen in 84 patients. Features that predicted upper gastrointestinal pathology were, in descending order of rank: a positive pointing sign, a positive stool Fecult test, a history of vomiting,

Screening for colorectal tumours (cancers and polyps) by searching for blood in stools using the gaiac test is a well-known method. We evaluated a new gaiac test, the originality of which from its coupling with an enzyme immuno-assay specifically measuring human hemoglobin (Fecatest). The objectives of this new test were to decrease false positives and thus to improve the positive predictive value of screening. Subjects over 45 years of age attending health examinations at a Center of Preventive Medicine were studied. Of the 5,185 subjects who received the test, 4,376 (84 p. 100) performed it

To date, there was no controlled-study regarding awareness and knowledge of colorectal cancer in the Turkish population. We therefore designed a questionnaire consisting of items related to socio-demographic parameters, medical and family history and questions of awareness and knowledge about colorectal cancer for use in a descriptive cross-sectional study. An interviewer-administered technique was applied and 450 subjects were interviewed in the outpatient clinics at Near East University Hospital. Among all subjects, 337 were found to be eligible for the study group. Exclusion criteria were a

Haemonchus contortus commences feeding on host blood by day 11 of infection, which leads to the presence of blood in the host's faeces. This study examined the capacity for a faecal occult blood (FOB) test to determine the severity of H. contortus infection in sheep at pasture, and to predict a rise in worm egg count (WEC) as infection matures. Diluted faeces were assayed with Bayer Hemastix and the change in colour of the reagent patch was scored on a 9-point scale from 1 (negative) to 5 in half unit increments. Performance of the test was compared with four benchmarks for severe infection: (

OBJECTIVE: To compare fecal screening tests in the diagnostic approach to childhood invasive diarrhea.
SETTING AND PATIENTS: We assessed 125 consecutive children with acute diarrhea for fecal lactoferrin, fecal leukocytes and occult blood from November, 1995, to June, 1996.
RESULTS: Lactoferrin showed a greater overall sensitivity than fecal leukocytes or occult blood for detecting invasive pathogens. Combinations of lactoferrin or fecal leukocytes and of lactoferrin or occult blood or both yielded sensitivities and negative predictive values close to 100%, being superior to all other combin

Physicians respond to a positive fecal occult blood test with a variety of workup strategies. To study the effect of the choice of strategy on the net costs and health benefits of colorectal cancer screening using this test, we used a decision analysis model to compare seven strategies that physicians might choose to examine a positive "screenee." Strategies using rigid or flexible sigmoidoscopy alone are not only insensitive, but also have high cost-effectiveness ratios. The strategy of air contrast barium enema alone had the lowest cost-effectiveness ratio. Rigid sigmoidoscopy combined with

Following five promotional and educational programs on CBS-TV news in Chicago, 54,101 Hemoccult kits were requested by the public and distributed by seven cancer detection facilities. Only 14,074 individuals completed the test. Six hundred and seventeen or 4.38% were positive. Two hundred and fifteen test positive persons failed to respond to repeated notification. In 123 positives, diagnostic tests by the private physician were considered incomplete. In 33 positives, the private physician did no further testing at all. In 152 positives, no abnormality could be found, but work-up was variable.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is one of transfusion-transmissible infection that is screened routinely in blood centers by serology and/or nucleic acid testing (NAT). Serology tests for HBV include antibody to hepatitis B core antigen (anti-HBc) and hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg). Blood centers around the world differ in their procedures for screening for HBV in blood donors. In high-income, HBV non-endemic countries, anti-HBc, HBsAg, and pooled NAT are usually used to screen blood donors, while in HBV endemic countries, anti-HBc is not usually used because it would lead to high discard rates.

INTRODUCTION: Food protein-induced allergic proctocolitis (FPIAP) is the most frequent presenta tion of non-IgE mediated food allergy (FA). The diagnosis is made by oral food challenge, however, non-invasive diagnostic tests are not available. In Chile, the fecal occult blood test (FOBT) is fre quently used to confirm FPIAP, however, there are no studies that support this practice.
OBJECTIVE: To establish the diagnostic validity of FOBT in the evaluation of infants with FPIAP.
PATIENTS AND METHOD: Case-control study with prospective recruitment of infants with rectal bleeding and suspicion o

BACKGROUND: The circulatory system is the main mechanism for transmission of the Hepatitis C Virus (HCV). A new class of HCV infections, Occult HCV infection (OCI), is defined as the presence of HCV-RNA in hepatocytes with the absence of HCV in the serum/plasma utilizing current laboratory assays. Different groups have reported the prevalence of OCI; however, its associated risk factors have not been established. In Mexico, there are no reports about OCI, so the objective of our study was to determine the prevalence of OCI in total blood donors in Mexico City, as well as its associated risk fa

OBJECTIVES: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is usually diagnosed as a result of symptoms but occasionally is found during investigation for other conditions. An earlier report from Nottingham had found a high prevalence of previously undetected "asymptomatic" IBD detected as a result of colorectal cancer screening, and the aim of this study was to reassess the prevalence, symptoms, and outcome in these patients.
METHODS: We investigated subjects found to be fecal occult blood (FOB) positive in a randomized trial of FOB screening for colorectal cancer. All FOB-positive subjects were investiga

AIMS AND BACKGROUND: Screening for colorectal cancer by fecal occult-blood testing has been shown to be effective in reducing colorectal cancer mortality. Total colonoscopy is the test of choice for the assessment of fecal occult blood-positive subjects. Double-contrast barium enema is commonly employed to study the rest of the colon when colonoscopy is incomplete. The present study evaluated the contribution of double-contrast barium enema in detecting neoplastic lesions of the colon in fecal occult-blood-positive subjects with incomplete colonoscopy.

A reversed passive latex agglutination test (RPLA) using anti-canine haemoglobin (Hb) antibody was developed for detecting bleeding in the lower digestive organs in dogs, and its applicability as a simple test for faecal occult blood was assessed. In Ouchterlony's gel immunodiffusion test, the anti-canine Hb antibody used to sensitize the latex reacted with canine Hb but not with Hbs, plasmas or meat extracts from pigs, goats, sheep, cattle, horses or chickens, or with fish extracts. Using latex sensitized with 50 micrograms/mg of anti-canine Hb IgG antibody, the lowest limit of detection for

Occult blood test for the screening of colon cancer has been made by immunological method using latex agglutination for 4 years since 1988. A total of 35,139 persons have received the screening test and out of 1886 persons, that is, 5.4% showed positive. Five hundred seventy of the positive result subjects (30.2%) underwent barium enema examination. Three hundred fifty nine subjects (62.8%) showed some abnormal findings. They underwent colonoscopic examination and 45 of them (7.9%) had colon cancer. Twenty six of these were of early stage type and 19 persons were of advanced stage.

INTRODUCTION: OCI is defined as the presence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) RNA in hepatocytes or peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and the absence of HCV RNA in serum. Two types of OCI are distinguished based on the presence or absence of anti-HCV antibodies: seropositive and seronegative.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of seronegative OCI and identify its genotypes in blood donors (BDs) and hospital patients (HPs) from Argentina.
METHODOLOGY: Peripheral blood and serum samples were collected from a total of 177 BDs and HPs. All individuals were non-reactive fo
