Emissions of total volatile organic compounds and indoor environment assessment in dental clinics in Athens, Greece.

OBJECTIVE: To quantify the amount of Total Volatile Organic Compounds (TVOCs) emitted from five dental substances commonly used in a dental clinic. METHOD: An assessment of the indoor air quality in two clinics of the Athens University Dentistry Faculty was conducted. RESULTS: It was found that TVOC emissions from Kalocryl and Bacillol reached extremely high values affecting the air in the dental clinics at short and long distances from the source. Six pollutants TVOCs, CO2, PM10, PM2.5, SO2 and NO(x) were measured and indoor sources associated with dental activities were identified. Very hi

Allergic contact dermatitis from sculptured acrylic nails: special presentation with an airborne pattern.

Methylmethacrylate was first reported in 1941 as a cause of contact dermatitis. Since then, occupational contact allergies to acrylates in dentistry, orthopedic surgery, printing industry and industry have been reported, but few reports are found in the literature as a consequence of the contact with sculptured artificial acrylic nails which are increasingly popular. We describe here 3 patients with contact allergy to acrylates in artificial sculptured nails. Patch tests were performed with the Portuguese baseline series of contact allergens and an extended series of acrylates were applied. In

Vaccine-preventable diseases: Immune response in a large population of healthcare students.

BACKGROUND: Students in medicine and other health professions are exposed to numerous occupational hazards, primarily biological hazards, during their academic careers at university. The aim of the present study was to investigate the seroprevalence characteristics of anti-HBsAg, anti-Measles, anti-Mumps, anti-Rubella and anti-Varicella IgG antibodies in healthcare students of a large teaching hospital in Rome. METHODS: To accomplish the study's aims, antibody serology data were gathered from students of Medicine and Surgery, Dentistry, and Health Professions at the Catholic University of the

Oral mucosal screening as an integral part of routine dental care.

The principal aim of this study was to assess the feasibility of conducting a systematic examination of the oral mucosa, as an integral part of the routine dental check-up and in conditions comparable with those in NHS dental practice. A total of 1949 individuals, who were already registered as patients with an industrial dental clinic, were invited to attend for an oral screen as part of their dental examination. Of these, 1947 patients agreed to participate and were also asked to complete a 'habits' questionnaire relating to their tobacco and alcohol use. A systematic examination of the oral

Noise Exposure in a Dental Teaching Hospital: Investigations and Recommendations for Dental Personnel.

INTRODUCTION: Exposure to excessive noise is a highly preventable occupational risk, with irreversible side effects that may negatively impact an individual's quality of life, such as noise-induced hearing loss and tinnitus. Dental personnel may be at particular risk due to their exposure to high levels of noise from dental equipment. Despite existing regulations and guidelines, there is limited understanding of cumulative noise exposure in dental teaching hospitals, particularly with respect to compliance with occupational standards. The aim of this study is to quantify the levels of noise ex

Prevalence of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Symptoms Among Young Dentists.

Objectives Although age is a risk factor, carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) can also affect younger individuals, particularly those involved in activities or occupations that require repetitive hand movements, forceful gripping, or prolonged wrist flexion/extension. This case-control study aimed to examine the prevalence of CTS symptoms and frequent object dropping among a group of young dentists who are exposed to CTS risk factors. Additionally, other reported risk factors for CTS, such as sex, obesity, and square wrist sign, were also investigated. Methods A total of 74 dentists (48 women, mean a

The Impact of Prolonged Dental Chair Utilization on Cervical Spine Mobility and Pain among Dental Internship Students: A Cross-Sectional Observational Study from the United Arab Emirates.

BACKGROUND: Dentistry is considered a high-risk profession for developing work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), particularly in the cervical region, due to prolonged static postures, repetitive movements, and sustained neck flexion during clinical procedures. Limited evidence exists regarding the early short-term effects of prolonged dental chair utilization on cervical spine mobility among dental interns. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate changes in cervical spine range of motion (ROM) and neck pain associated with prolonged dental chair utilization among dental internship students . METHODS:

Kinematic analysis of work-related musculoskeletal loading of trunk among dentists in Germany.

BACKGROUND: In Germany, about 86.7 % of the dentists have stated to suffer from pain in the neck and shoulder region. These findings are predominantly based on surveys. Therefore the objective of this study is to conduct a kinematic analysis of occupational posture in dentistry. METHODS: Twenty one dentists (11 f/10 m; age: 40.1 ± 10.4 years) have participated in this examination. The CUELA-System was used to collect kinematic data of the activities on an average dental workday. A detailed, computer-based task analysis took place parallel to the kinematic examination. Through the synchronizat

Injury prevention for the practice of dentistry.

There is an abundance of dental professionals with work-related pain and dysfunction. Dentistry poses a huge challenge because of the ergonomics of dental work. The biggest risk factors are the awkward prolonged seated postures with no back support and the limited range of motion and isometric muscle contraction created by working in a confined area, namely the mouth. The following manuscript offers exercises that constitute a preventive program to target the typical problem areas of the dental professional--the neck, lower back and wrist/hand.

Impact of Tooth Loss and Other Risk Factors on Cognitive Impairment in Saudi Female Population.

INTRODUCTION: It is known that cognitive impairment is linked to aging and neurobiological, psychological, and social factors. Recently, however, mastication and the number of teeth has also attracted attention, with a previous case control study reporting a correlation between the loss of teeth and Alzheimer's disease. OBJECTIVE: To investigate possible relationships between cognitive function and various demographic variables, stress, medical history, and number of natural teeth in a specified female population. In October 2013, members of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry were invited to participate in an electronic questionnaire. Categories of questions were demographics, attitudes and confidence in speech pathology, and theoretical and practical knowledge of speech development and speech pathology. Theoretical knowledge was assessed using questions about phonetics and speech milestones. Practical

Impact of ergonomic interventions on musculoskeletal health and work performance in dentists and dental students: a scoping review.

Dentists face various occupational demands that heighten their risk of developing work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs), including prolonged static postures, repetitive movements, unsuitable dental instruments, extended work hours, and insufficient rest breaks. This scoping review (ScR) aims to systematically map the effects of ergonomics interventions on musculoskeletal and performance variables in dentistry. Following PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR), searches were conducted in the Medline/PubMed and Web of Science databases, covering studies published between 2012

Patch test results of the dental personnel with contact dermatitis.

OBJECTIVES: Dental personnel have high risk of occupational contact dermatitis. The aim of this study is to detect the materials which cause contact sensitization and the frequency of contact dermatitis by using patch tests with European standard series and dental screening series in dental personnel. METHODS: Between August 2008 and July 2009, 461 dental personnel working in Ankara (Turkey) were examined and age, gender, previous history of dermatitis, area of the skin affected and clinical diagnosis were noted. About 198 (43%) of the dental personnel were diagnosed contact dermatitis. Sixty
