[Occupational asthma. A case series].

BACKGROUND: Asthma has a global prevalence of 18%. In work-related asthma, there is an association between asthma and the exposure to dust, vapors, or fumes only at the workplace, in patients with or without a previous asthma diagnosis; it represents approximately 5-25% of the cases of adult onset asthma. In Mexico, the information about this topic is scarce. CASE REPORT: A series of 17 patients with an asthma diagnosis and occupational exposure to dust, vapors, or fumes is reported; occupational asthma was determined by the Allergy and Clinical Immunology Service at Centro Médico Nacional Si

OCCUPATIONAL CONTACT DERMATITIS AMONGST DENTISTS AND DENTAL TECHNICIANS.

Since the working medical personnel including dentists and dental technicians mainly use their hands, it is understandable that the most common occupational disease amongst medical personnel is contact dermatitis (CD) (80%-90% of cases). Development of occupational CD is caused by contact of the skin with various substances in occupational environment. Occupational etiologic factors for dental personnel are foremost reactions to gloves containing latex, followed by various dental materials (e.g., metals, acrylates), detergents, lubricants, solvents, chemicals, etc. Since occupational CD is rel

Occupational skin diseases.

Primary care physicians will likely see a wide variety of occupational skin diseases in their practices, including allergic contact dermatitis, irritant contact dermatitis, contact urticaria, a variety of infectious diseases, and skin cancers. The ideal role of a medical practitioner involved in occupational dermatology is not only to diagnose and treat patients, but also to determine the cause of the occupational skin disease and to make recommendations for its prevention. Making the diagnosis and offering treatment, determining the cause, and recommending measures can be difficult undertakin

Sexual problems of male patients in family practice.

OBJECTIVES: Little is known about men's expectations of their family physicians regarding sexual disorders. Our goal was to evaluate the frequency of sexual problems among male patients in family practice and to assess their need for help. STUDY DESIGN: We performed a cross-sectional survey based on structured questionnaires answered by patients and physicians in German family practices. POPULATION: We approached 43 family physicians; 20 (43%) participated. On a single day all men 18 years and older visiting the participating practices were approached, and 307 (84%) took part in the survey.

[Identification of occupational risks associated with diseases suspected to be of possible occupational origin seen in the National Health System].

In an earlier study, we identified 26 diseases of possible occupational origin, seen in different settings within the national health system in Catalonia. In this literature review we identify those occupational risk factors most strongly associated with these pathologies. After applying inclusion/exclusion criteria to 754 reviews, meta-analyses and/or practice guidelines, 37 articles remained that were rated for study quality by 3 reviewers. Of these, the 31 studies of highest quality were examined in depth, and summarised in a final table. Ergonomic risk factors (manual handling of materials

[Occupational medical counseling in rehabilitation].

The present contribution seeks to outline the counselling possibilities on the part of the industrial medical service. Starting out from the legal bases (the Act concerning safety at work), the scope for action available internally and externally is examined. Towards the background of the assertion (which is in agreement with numerous other authors) that rehabilitation invariably means teamwork, the author seeks to describe the internally competent authorities and departments in terms of internal team, and to contrast it with the external team involved. A number of opportunities for cooperatio

Are interventions to reduce sitting at workplace effective?

It is common for family physicians in developing nations like India to encounter patients whose profession demands sedentary lifestyle. Such patients present with back problems, obesity, cardiovascular diseases and diabetes and ask doctors for advice on how to decrease sitting. Workplaces need to address this issue by inculcating strategies to decrease sitting and improve health of their employees. Occupational physicians too need to suggest evidence-based strategies to employers. This article provides an evidence based summary about what interventions are actually effective for decreasing sit

Common industrial processes and occupational irritants and allergens--an update.

This paper reviews the recent development of the industrial processes in the construction, electronics and metal industries which are the predominant industries in developing countries. Common occupational irritants and allergens are presented. The information is essential for occupational dermatologists and physicians managing patients with occupational skin diseases. In the construction industry, the prefabrication construction methods are now widely used. The commonest irritant is cement and the allergens are chromate, rubber chemicals and epoxy resins. In the electronics industry, the comm

[Experience of prevention activities in local health units. Assaults and musculoskeletal disorders].

BACKGROUND: Assaults against health care workers and musculoskeletal disorders are two significant issues for occupational health physicians. Training (the most common form of proposed intervention) by itself is not effective in reducing adverse effects. CASE REPORT: Two field studies are reported. The first experience targeted physical violence against nursing assistants in a long-term psychiatric care unit. The basic programme included architectural, organizational, educational, and clinical efforts and led to a significant reduction in aggressive behaviour by patients. The second experienc

The Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common problem in various jobs, but not in the cleaning farms. A population of 99 women working in hospital cleaning activities was investigated to define if, although the risk assessment was negative for cumulative trauma diseases (CTD), the Occupational physician should search or not the CTS. We found that CTS prevalence in exposed group is higher than the common female population not exposed and the female workers are younger, so we can suppose the occupational risk exist although the negative risk assessment.
