BACKGROUND: Workers can be injured by animals such as mammals and insects. Previous studies found that most animal-related occupational fatalities were caused by horses and cattle. We analyzed characteristics of recent nonfatal severe animal-related injuries in US workers.
METHODS: The severe injury reports (SIR) database, collected by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, contains employer self-reports of inpatient hospitalizations and amputations. We used 2015-2021 SIR data to assess properties of animal-related injuries, including the type of animal involved, the nature of the

The study was designed to investigate characteristics of work-related hand injuries (WRHI) referred to a University hospital emergency department (ED) in an industrialized region as well as to supply data for preventive strategies. All patients with WRHI referred to the University-based ED in the two-year period were investigated. Sociodemographic and injury-related clinical information were analyzed. Out of 746 patients who were admitted to the ED due to occupational injuries within the two-year study period, 244 (32.7%) with isolated wrist, hand and finger injuries were included in the study

BACKGROUND: Little is known about cost differences for demographic groups or across occupational injuries and illnesses.
METHODS: In this incidence study of nationwide data for 1993, an analysis was conducted on fatal and non-fatal injury and illness data recorded in government data sets. Costs data were from workers' compensation records, estimates of lost wages, and jury awards.
RESULTS: The youngest (age < or = 17) and oldest (age > or = 65) workers had exceptionally high fatality costs. Whereas men's costs for non-fatal incidents were nearly double those for women, men's costs for fatal

The purpose of this study was to examine nonfatal occupational injury data associated with slip and fall accidents by extracting the latest information from the database of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Systematic information on the cost and causes of industrial slip and fall accidents are not readily available from statistical and survey data sources, as such, detailed information regarding the slip-/fall-related injuries in US industries categorized by various factors are presented in this study. Nonfatal injuries resulting in days lost from work due to fall and slip were categorized

Workers involved in small-scale manufacturing businesses are known to comprise a high-risk population for occupational injury. The present study investigated the prevalence and correlates of occupational injury in this population. A self-administered questionnaire that solicited answers about occupational information including injury, demographic characteristics, health conditions and lifestyle factors was collected from a sample of 1,298 workers in 228 small-scale manufacturing enterprises (defined as fewer than 50 workers) aged 16-78 (mean 46) yr in Yashio city, Saitama, Japan (response rate

To evaluate time trends of occupational pesticide-related injuries in Costa Rica, a survey was carried out three times over a ten-year period at a national reporting system for occupational accidents and diseases among wage-earning workers. The sample comprised the accidents reported during the months of June of the years 1982, 1987, and 1992. The overall incidence rates were 1.8, 2.7, and 2.5 per 1,000 agricultural workers, respectively. Rates among female workers increased (3.1, 3.7, 5.4) and were elevated as compared with male workers (1.7, 2.6, 2.3). The trend for topical lesions was upgoi

This study was designed to compare the risk of occupational injuries in foreign workers compared to native workers in Taiwan. The cohort of foreign workers under study was constructed by records of legally registered workers migrated from foreign countries to Taiwan from July 1, 1991 to December 31, 1993. The native Taiwanese workers for comparison were labor-insured workers working in the same industries as foreign workers in 1992. The number of occupational injuries in the first year of employment were obtained by matching the cohort of foreign workers with the labor insurance payment record

This study examines the incidence in Australia of "serious" occupational injuries, arbitrarily defined as those which resulted in absence from work for six months or more. The raw data were contained in computer print-outs specially prepared by the State offices of the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) and the study includes analyses by age, sex, occupation and industry of the injured person. The unexpectedly large total of 14,281 high-severity injuries cannot be supported with confidence since the principal finding was the large and consistent variation in injury rates between the States.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to analyze the risks associated with occupational exposure to hydrogen sulfide and to identify the main factors that lead to its formation and accumulation in work environments. The study also aimed to propose measures that may reduce the frequency and severity of related incidents.
METHODS: The study was based on an evaluation of workplace accident records involving hydrogen sulfide and an assessment of available scientific findings on its generation, behavior, and effects on the human body. Particular focus was placed on confined or poorly ventila

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests that rates of occupational injuries in the US are decreasing. As several different occupational injury surveillance systems are used in the US, more detailed investigation of this trend is merited. Furthermore, studies of this decrease remain descriptive and do not use inferential statistics. The aim of this study was to provide both descriptive and inferential statistics of temporal trends of occupational injuries treated in US emergency departments (EDs) for 2012 to 2019.
METHODS: Monthly non-fatal occupational injury rates from 2012 to 2019 were estimated usin

BACKGROUND: The cost burden of occupational injuries has significant effects on the social well-being of workers. Although there seems to be growing evidence on the cost burden on other public health issues, little is known about occupational injuries, especially in low- to middle-income countries including Ghana.
OBJECTIVE: This study, therefore, sought to estimate the cost burden of managing occupational injuries among frontline construction workers.
METHODS: A prevalence-based cost of illness approach was used to estimate the cost burden of construction injuries. A structured questionnair

BACKGROUND: Workers with disabilities have a higher risk of nonfatal occupational injuries than workers without disabilities. The characteristics of these injuries are not well described.
METHODS: Using 1997-2011 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) data, we compared the nonfatal occupational injuries sustained by U.S. workers with and without disabilities.
RESULTS: Overexertion or strenuous movements and falls accounted for 56.7% of all occupational injuries in workers with disabilities, compared with 45.6% in workers without a disability. Workers with disabilities were more frequently i

Occupational injuries requiring admission to a trauma unit were examined to outline the events surrounding the injury and to examine the costs. Sixty-nine patients were admitted over a 12-month period, representing 4.30% of all work-related injuries attending the emergency department and 4.25% of all admissions to the trauma unit. Most were male (91%), working in skilled trade occupations (65%), with a mean age of 38.8 years. Personal protective equipment was used only by 46% of injured workers who should have been using it. Sixty-one percent of patients believed that their injury was preventa

BACKGROUND: Occupational injuries research and surveillance is important for prevention and public health protection. A new occupational surveillance system based on linkage of work histories calculated from the Italian National Social Security Institute (INPS) and occupational injuries provided by the National Insurance Institute for Occupational Injuries (INAIL) was created and assessed.
METHODS: It has been extracted a 1% sample of individuals from INPS. For each subject, a detailed description of the career has been compiled between 1985 and 2004, and matched on an individual basis to wor
