Association between extremely low-frequency electromagnetic fields occupations and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: a meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: To estimate the relationship between exposure to extremely low-frequency electromagnetic fields (ELF-EMF) and the risk of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) by a meta-analysis. METHODS: Through searching PubMed databases (or manual searching) up to April 2012 using the following keywords: "occupational exposure", "electromagnetic fields" and "amyotrophic lateral sclerosis" or "motor neuron disease", seventeen studies were identified as eligible for this meta-analysis. The associations between ELF-EMF exposure and the ALS risk were estimated based on study design (case-control or

Career plans for male-dominated occupations among female seniors in religious and secular high schools.

This study investigated the hypothesis that the religious beliefs of young women significantly affect their career planning. All female seniors (N = 315) in one public religious and two public secular high schools in Israel responded to inventories examining their (1) orientation to homemaking or career, (2) interest in male-dominated occupations, and (3) preference for male-dominated occupations. Results from regression analyses indicated that young women from the secular schools, as compared to those from the religious school, expressed greater interest in and preference for male-dominated o

Occupational therapy, cancer, and occupation-centred practice: impact of training in the model of human occupation.

INTRODUCTION: This study examined the influence of training in an occupation-centred model on the practice of occupational therapists working in a cancer hospital. There is an increased need for occupation-based rehabilitation services for individuals with and surviving cancer. Incorporating an occupation-centred model into practice has unique challenges for occupational therapists working in oncology settings. Utilizing an occupation-centred model of practice may influence the therapeutic reasoning of occupational therapists. METHODS: A generic qualitative inquiry (Patton, 2015) was used to

Home-based telework and worker health and well-being across service occupations: A critical interpretive synthesis.

The rapid expansion of home-based telework since COVID-19 has diversified the remote workforce to include service occupations centered on real-time interaction with patients, clients, and customers. Yet the literature on telework and health remains largely oriented toward the experiences of knowledge workers, obscuring how home-based telework shapes the health and well-being of interaction-intensive service workers. We conducted a Critical Interpretive Synthesis of 69 peer-reviewed studies (2000 to 2025) to develop a theoretical account of how home-based telework is experienced across service

Effect of fusion and arthroplasty for cervical degenerative disc disease in patients with physically demanding occupations.

BACKGROUND: Cervical degenerative disc disease (DDD) significantly affects the quality of life in labor-intensive careers. When conservative measures fail, either anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) or cervical disc arthroplasty (CDA) may be indicated. Although ACDF is the gold standard, it can limit motion, whereas CDA preserves motion and may reduce adjacent segment disease (ASD). Few studies compare these surgeries in physically demanding populations, and the influence of workers' compensation (WC) on outcomes is unclear. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to compare the out

Solar ultraviolet radiation exposure in workers with outdoor occupations: a systematic review and call to action.

Chronic solar ultraviolet radiation (sUVR) exposure leads to an increased incidence of non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) development, particularly when accumulated over decades. Workers in certain industries, such as construction, agriculture, postal workers, and the military, are at higher risk due to cumulative sUVR exposure in their line of work. By assessing the relationship between sUVR exposure in outdoor workers and their skin cancer risk and defining methods of prevention, clinicians can offer focused sun protection counseling to this unique population. Quality of life following non-dysvascular lower limb amputation is contextualized through occupations: a qualitative study.

PURPOSE: To understand how persons with non-dysvascular lower limb amputation (LLA) use occupations to contextualize their quality of life (QoL). METHODS: A qualitative study using an interpretative description approach was conducted. Analysis of the interviews was guided by an occupational perspective, which considers the day-to-day activities that are important to an individual. RESULTS: Twenty adults with an adult-acquired non-dysvascular amputation (e.g., trauma, cancer or infection) were interviewed. Following thematic analysis, two main themes were developed: (1) sense of self expresse

Prevalence of smokeless tobacco use in India and its association with various occupations: A LASI study.

BACKGROUND: More than two-thirds of deaths in developing countries are due to non-communicable diseases, and tobacco is a leading risk factor. There are numerous different socio-demographic factors that impact on the use of smokeless tobacco, of which occupation is one. The objectives of this study are to find out the overall prevalence of smokeless tobacco use (ever and current use), the pattern of association with various occupations and related variables (current and past workers), and the role of childhood adversity on initiation and use. METHODS: This study used data from the Longitudina

Bladder cancer risk in relation to occupations held in a nationwide case-control study in Iran.

Globally, bladder cancer has been identified as one of the most frequent occupational cancers, but our understanding of occupational bladder cancer risk in Iran is less advanced. This study aimed to assess the risk of bladder cancer in relation to occupation in Iran. We used the IROPICAN case-control study data including 717 incident cases and 3477 controls. We assessed the risk of bladder cancer in relation to ever working in major groups of the International Standard Classification of Occupations (ISCO-68) while controlling for cigarette smoking, opium consumption. Logistic regression models

[Contact allergy caused by formaldehyde, based on materials from the Institute for medical occupations in Lodz].

Incidence of formaldehyde allergy was analysed in 3,705 subjects with dermatitis and in 1,530 subjects with allergic dermatitis examined within the last fifteen years. Rates of increase or decrease in relative risk during that period was analysed in women, in men and in the whole group. In the whole material no differences in the incidence of allergy according to sex were found. Among women allergic to formaldehyde, dermatitis was found in 4.5 per cent and allergic dermatitis in 11.6 per cent. Among men the per cent was equal to 4.6 and 10.5, respectively. A significant upward tendency was fou

Can Occupational Therapy Address the Occupational Implications of Hoarding?

Hoarding is often described as a medical disorder, defined by a persistent difficulty in discarding possessions and associated high levels of emotional distress when forced to part with these. This article will discuss how having a different view of hoarding, seeing hoarding as a daily occupation which provides value, purpose, and meaning and with a relationship to self-identity and life purpose, could offer alternate interventions to support an individual who hoards. The article will consider the components of hoarding activity and how these relate to health and wellbeing and doing, being, be

[The occupational and active research, diagnosis and reporting of occupational diseases].

The Occupational Doctor plays a key role on the protection of workers safety and prevention of occupational and work-related disease. His training and his need of updating, due to the constant transformation of work, the evolution of technology and the medical progress, set him in the center of all activities carried out to protect health in workplaces. The Occupational Doctor should devote special attention to the working anamnesis as well as to the pathological anamnesis both close and remote. He should also pay attention to semeiotics. Another important element is the relationship between t
