Climate change and polar marine invertebrates: life-history responses in a warmer, high CO2 world.

Polar marine invertebrates serve as bellwethers for species vulnerabilities in the face of changing climate at high latitudes of the Earth. Ocean acidification, warming/heatwaves, freshening, sea ice retreat and productivity change are challenges for polar species. Adaptations to life in cold water with intensely seasonal productivity has shaped species traits at both poles. Polar species have life histories often characterised as K-strategist or K-selected (e.g. slow growth and development, larval hypometabolism) that make them sensitive to climate stress and altered seasonal productivity. eCoral: How Electrolysis Could Restore Seawater Conditions Ideal for Coral Reefs.

Coral reefs suffer from climate change, including long-term ocean acidification (OA) and warming and short-term bleaching, tropical storms, and pollution events, all of which are increasing in frequency and severity. It is urgent yet unclear how to intervene to save coral reefs. Reversal of the ocean pH to preindustrial levels could restore coral reefs to their preindustrial growth rates; however, strategies to reverse OA on environmentally relevant scales have not been established. Anecdotally, electrolysis seems to help coral reefs recover from acidification and short-term events, but few un

The water content, apoptosis, and proliferation of the brain in marine medaka affected by seawater acidification.

A possible explanation for ocean acidification-induced changes in fish behavior is a systemic effect on the nervous system. Three biological barriers at the blood-brain interface effectively separate the brain from the body fluids. It is not known whether fish brain regions in contact with these barriers are affected by acidification. Here, we studied structural changes in medaka (Oryzias melastigma) brain regions contacting cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) after short-term (7 days) CO2 exposure. The brain water content decreased significantly and the superficial structure of the pia mater was change

Spectroscopic Transduction in Miniaturized Lab-on-a-Chip Devices: Functional Nanomaterials and Edge AI Integration for Real-Time in Situ Environmental Monitoring of Heavy Metals, Pesticides, and Marine Pollutants.

The rising demand for real-time, in situ monitoring of heavy metals, pesticides, marine pollutants, and ocean acidification proxies has exposed the limitations of conventional laboratory-based spectroscopic methods, which suffer from slow turnaround, high costs, and poor adaptability to remote environments. This critical review surveys advances from 2023-2026 in microfluidic lab-on-a-chip (LOC) platforms that integrate functional nanomaterials with spectroscopic transduction (primarily fluorescence, absorbance, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), surface plasmon resonance (SPR), and quan

pH changes differently affect carbonic anhydrases (Ap-CAs) transcriptions in the marine toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium pacificum.

Carbonic anhydrases (CAs) involve carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration in photosynthetic microalgae. They are known to function under low CO2 level in seawater, possibly affected by pH conditions. In the present study, we determined four novel CA genes, namely Ap-αCA, -βCA, -δCA1, and -δCA2, from the toxic marine dinoflagellate Alexandrium pacificum. The Ap-CAs were divided into three classes, alpha (α), beta (β), and delta (δ) via their phylogeny and motif features. Individual Ap-CA might be differently located to chloroplast, cytoplasm, mitochondria, or extracellular as judged by signal peptid

Cellular and genetic responses of Phaeodactylum tricornutum to seawater acidification and copper exposure.

The ongoing decline in seawater pH, driven by the absorption of excess atmospheric CO2, represents a major environmental issue. This reduction in pH can interact with metal pollution, resulting in complex effects on marine phytoplankton. In this study, we examined the combined impacts of seawater acidification and copper (Cu) exposure on the marine diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum. Our data indicate that elevated pCO2 had a minor effect on the growth and photochemistry and overall performance of P. tricornutum. However, seawater acidification significantly influenced cell size, surface roughne

Stylasterid corals build aragonite skeletons in undersaturated water despite low pH at the site of calcification.

Anthropogenic carbon emissions are causing seawater pH to decline, yet the impact on marine calcifiers is uncertain. Scleractinian corals and coralline algae strongly elevate the pH of their calcifying fluid (CF) to promote calcification. Other organisms adopt less energetically demanding calcification approaches but restrict their habitat. Stylasterid corals occur widely (extending well below the carbonate saturation horizon) and precipitate both aragonite and high-Mg calcite, however, their mode of biocalcification and resilience to ocean acidification are unknown. Here we measure skeletal b

Impacts of Warming, Acidification, and Deoxygenation on Embryos and Larvae of Gilthead Seabream (Sparus aurata).

The interaction between increased dissolved carbon dioxide, rising temperatures, and oxygen loss-the so-called "deadly trio"-is expected to strongly affect marine biota over the coming years, undermining ocean services and uses. Nonetheless, no study has so far scrutinized the cumulative impact of these three stressors on fish embryos and larvae. To fill this knowledge gap, we conducted a fully multi-factorial experiment to investigate the effects of warming (+4 °C: 22 °C), acidification (Δ - 0.4 pH units: 7.7 pH, pCO2 ~1000 μatm), and deoxygenation (Δ - 60% O2 saturation: 3 mg O2 L-1) on phys

Effects of acidification on olfactory-mediated behaviour in freshwater and marine ecosystems: a synthesis.

For many aquatic organisms, olfactory-mediated behaviour is essential to the maintenance of numerous fitness-enhancing activities, including foraging, reproduction and predator avoidance. Studies in both freshwater and marine ecosystems have demonstrated significant impacts of anthropogenic acidification on olfactory abilities of fish and macroinvertebrates, leading to impaired behavioural responses, with potentially far-reaching consequences to population dynamics and community structure. Whereas the ecological impacts of impaired olfactory-mediated behaviour may be similar between freshwater

Changes in Ocean Heat, Carbon Content, and Ventilation: A Review of the First Decade of GO-SHIP Global Repeat Hydrography.

Global ship-based programs, with highly accurate, full water column physical and biogeochemical observations repeated decadally since the 1970s, provide a crucial resource for documenting ocean change. The ocean, a central component of Earth's climate system, is taking up most of Earth's excess anthropogenic heat, with about 19% of this excess in the abyssal ocean beneath 2,000 m, dominated by Southern Ocean warming. The ocean also has taken up about 27% of anthropogenic carbon, resulting in acidification of the upper ocean. Increased stratification has resulted in a decline in oxygen and incr

Isotocin receptor-adenylyl cyclase signaling mediates pH compensation in marine fish exposed to CO2-induced acidification.

Marine fish survival is threatened by ocean acidification, but the hormonal mechanisms for pH compensation are not well understood, limiting mechanistic understanding of stress responses in marine fish. We examined isotocin signaling in marine medaka (Oryzias melastigma) exposed to year-2100 ocean acidification conditions (Pco2 ∼0.14 kPa, pH 7.6). Our analysis demonstrated that isotocin receptor b (ITRb) was selectively upregulated at 6 h postexposure in adult gills, though it showed only a nonsignificant trend at 5 days postfertilization (dpf) embryos, whereas adenylyl cyclase 5 (ADCY5) showe

Potentially toxic elements in multi-stressor marine environments: bioaccumulation, ecosystem impacts, and human health implications.

Potentially toxic elements pollution in marine environments is intensifying under anthropogenic activities and climate-driven changes, yet the interactive effects of multiple stressors on metal bioaccumulation, ecosystem health, and human risk remain inadequately synthesized. This review aims to quantitatively integrate multi-stressor interactions involving ocean warming, acidification, and eutrophication with potentially toxic elements dynamics across coastal, estuarine, and open ocean systems. Following PRISMA guidelines, 154 peer-reviewed studies from 652 screened records were synthesized t

Calcifying plankton: From biomineralization to global change.

The cycling of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) in the ocean is closely linked to seawater alkalinity and the regulation of atmospheric CO2. In the modern pelagic ocean, almost all CaCO3 is produced by three groups of calcifying planktonic organisms: coccolithophores, foraminifers, and shelled pteropods. In this Review, we examine the differences in functional traits that define each group's distinctive role in the global carbon cycle and their sensitivity to climate change and ocean acidification. This synthesis reveals that a single representation of CaCO3 in climate models is unlikely to accuratel

Olfactory specialization in the Senegalese sole (Solea senegalensis): CO2 acidified water triggers nostril-specific immune processes.

Increased carbon dioxide (CO2) in the ocean is changing seawater chemistry. Behavioural alterations in CO2 exposed fish have been linked to changes in the central nervous system (CNS). However, we hypothesise that receptor cells in direct contact with the environment are more susceptible to changes in water chemistry than the CNS. Electrophysiology, histology, and transcriptomics were used to explore the effect of exposure to CO2 acidified water on the olfactory epithelium (OE) of the Senegalese sole (Solea senegalensis). The upper and lower OE of this flatfish detect different odorants and ar

Interactive impacts of CO2-induced seawater acidification and cadmium exposure on antioxidant defenses of juvenile tongue sole Cynoglossus semilaevis.

Antioxidant responses of juvenile sole exposed to seawater acidification (SA) and Cd were investigated. SA increased lipid peroxidation (LPO) in the fish, independent of Cd concentrations. Cd at medium and high levels inflated LPO under no or moderate SA conditions. This effect was absent under high SA levels, due to SA effect exceeding and obscuring Cd effect. SA and Cd collaborated to provoke LPO, with SOD and CAT being stimulated to defend against oxidative stress, while those related to GSH redox cycle were inhibited under SA exposure. Responses of GSH-related antioxidants to Cd impact var

Proteomic and metabolomic responses of Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas to elevated pCO2 exposure.

UNLABELLED: The gradually increased atmospheric CO2 partial pressure (pCO2) has thrown the carbonate chemistry off balance and resulted in decreased seawater pH in marine ecosystem, termed ocean acidification (OA). Anthropogenic OA is postulated to affect the physiology of many marine calcifying organisms. However, the susceptibility and metabolic pathways of change in most calcifying animals are still far from being well understood. In this work, the effects of exposure to elevated pCO2 were characterized in gills and hepatopancreas of Crassostrea gigas using integrated proteomic and metabolo

Alkaline materials for coastal ocean alkalinity enhancement: A comparative study of natural silicates and industrial byproducts.

Coastal ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) is a promising ocean-based carbon dioxide removal (CDR) approach for mitigating climate change and counteracting ocean acidification. However, uncertainties persist regarding the efficacy and environmental safety of alkaline materials under realistic coastal conditions. This study comparatively investigated the CO2 sequestration potential, geochemical processes, and environmental impacts of four alkaline materials-natural silicates (olivine, basalt) and industrial byproducts (fly ash, steel slag)-through laboratory incubations with natural seawater (f

Climate-driven restructuring of phytoplankton productivity and community composition in the south-eastern black sea: Insights from seasonal CO2-Temperature manipulation experiments.

Semi-enclosed marine systems with low buffering capacity, such as the Black Sea, are expected to experience amplified impacts of ocean acidification and warming, yet experimental evidence on their combined short-term effects on natural phytoplankton assemblages remains limited. Here, we present a seasonally resolved one-year study (four experiments conducted between 2022 and 2023) based on 48 h short-term microcosm incubation experiments using natural phytoplankton communities collected from coastal and offshore stations in the south-eastern Black Sea. CO2 concentrations (360, 600, and 760 ppm

Sub-lethal combined effects of illicit drug and decreased pH on marine mussels: A short-time exposure to crack cocaine in CO2 enrichment scenarios.

The increasing CO2-concentrations in the atmosphere promote ocean acidification. Seawater chemistry changes interact with contaminants, such as illicit drugs in the coastal zones. This work evaluates impacts of pH decrease and crack-cocaine exposure on the commercial mussel Perna perna through biomarker responses (lysosomal membrane stability, lipid peroxidation, and DNA strand breaks). The organisms were exposed to different crack-cocaine concentrations (0.5, 5.0, and 50 μg L-1) combined with different pH values (8.3, 8.0, 7.5, 7.0, 6.5, and 6.0) for 96 h.
