Peripheral compound odontoma: A rare case report and literature review.

Peripheral odontoma is a very rare odontogenic hamartoma arising in soft tissues. Here, we report a case of peripheral odontoma in a pediatric patient and review the cases published in the literature. An 11-year-old male patient presented a nodular lesion in the anterior region of the palate for over 1 year. Under the clinical hypothesis of fibroma, an excisional biopsy was performed. Histopathological examination revealed the presence of tooth-like structures, formed by enamel, and dentin matrix, occasionally associated with the dental papilla and surrounding pulp tissue, thus, the histopatho

First permanent molar root development arrest associated with compound odontoma.

Trauma or infection to the primary tooth may have deleterious effects on the underlying developing tooth buds. Anatomically the root apices of primary teeth are in close proximity to the developing permanent tooth buds; hence spread of infection originating from pulp necrosis of primary tooth may not only affect the underlying tooth bud but may also affect the adjacent tooth buds. The extent of malformation depends on the developmental stage of tooth or the age of patient. Presented here is a rare case of complete arrest of maxillary first permanent molar root growth due to spread of periapica

Differentiation and regenerative capacities of human odontoma-derived mesenchymal cells.

Regenerating human tooth ex vivo and biological repair of dental caries are hampered by non-viable odontogenic stem cells that can regenerate different tooth components. Odontoma is a developmental dental anomaly that may contain putative post-natal stem cells with the ability to differentiate and regenerate in vivo new dental structures that may include enamel, dentin, cementum and pulp tissues. We evaluated odontoma tissues from 14 patients and further isolated and characterized human odontoma-derived mesenchymal cells (HODCs) with neural stem cell and hard tissue regenerative properties fro

Calcifying odontogenic cyst associated with odontoma: report of two cases.

The calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC) is a nonneoplastic lesion whose possible association with other odontogenic lesions such as odontoma has been considered improbable by some authors. This paper reports two cases of true odontoma found concurrently with the COC.

Ameloblastic Fibro-Odontoma with an FGFR1 Mutation: A Case Report.

PURPOSE: Ameloblastic fibro-odontoma (AFO) is a rare benign mixed odontogenic tumor that, after being classified for years as a distinct entity, was redefined as a "developing odontoma" in the 2017 World Health Organization classification. This article presents a unique case of an AFO with an FGFR1 mutation. METHODS: We present a case of an 8-year-old child with a slowly progressive swelling in the lower left mandible. Next-generation sequencing (TSO500 panel) was performed. RESULTS: Panoramic radiography revealed an odontogenic tumor; therefore, a transoral enucleation was performed. Pathol

Giant Complex Odontoma of the Posterior Mandible: A Case Report.

Complex odontoma is a benign odontogenic tumor composed of disorganized dental tissues, including enamel, dentin, cementum, and pulp. Unlike compound odontomas, which exhibit tooth-like structures, complex odontomas form a mass without anatomical organization. These tumors frequently present without symptoms and are typically identified inadvertently during standard dental imaging procedures. They originate from the dental lamina and develop due to tooth-development disturbances, potentially influenced by genetic, developmental, and environmental factors. They are most commonly found in the po

Developing Odontoma in the Mandible of an Eight-Year-Old Boy.

Benign mixed odontogenic tumors have been repeatedly classified and reclassified over the past few decades. Odontoma is considered a hamartoma due to its slow growth and non-aggressive nature. We present an interesting case of developing odontoma in an eight-year-old boy. His complaint was a slow-growing swelling in the lower right back tooth region. Clinical examination revealed a carious deciduous second molar. The orthopantomogram revealed a well-defined radiolucency around the unerupted mandibular first premolar and impacted mandibular second premolar. Histopathology revealed an odontogeni

Ameloblastic fibro‑odontoma in the posterior mandible: A case report.

Ameloblastic fibro-odontoma (AFO) is a rare, slow-growing neoplastic lesion classified as a benign, epithelial odontogenic mesenchymal tumor. This tumor exhibits histological features characteristic of both ameloblastic fibromas and complex odontomas. The clinical manifestation of AFO is typically characterized by the asymptomatic enlargement of the jawbones. Radiographically, it presents as a distinct radiolucent region, indicating the presence of radiopaque substances with varying degrees of irregularities in size and morphology. Standard therapeutic intervention involves enucleation. Despit

A Rare Case of Peripheral Compound Odontoma and Review of the Literature.

Peripheral or extraosseous odontogenic tumors are rare oral soft tissue enlargements which demonstrate the same histologic features of their intraosseous counterparts but emerge in gingiva and mucosa. In this paper we report a case of peripheral odontoma in a 12-years-old female patient presented asymptomatic swelling in the palatal site. After the clinical and radiographic examination, excisional biopsy was applied to the lesion located entirely in the soft tissue of maxillary incisors. Histopathologically presence of tooth-like structures containing dentin with regular canals and partly enam

Middle ear odontoma: A case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Odontomas are benign neoplasms originating from odontogenic tissues. Most of these masses are asymptomatic and can only be diagnosed correctly via radiological studies. Treatment of choice for management of odontoma involves surgical excision to prevent secondary complications and result in a favourable prognosis. CASE PRESENTATION: This paper presents a rare case of odontoma of the middle ear in a four-year-old girl. The mass caused unilateral conductive hearing loss and facial nerve entrapment. We shed light on the typically vague clinical presentations of odontomas, as well a

Odontomas are associated with impacted permanent teeth in orthodontic patients.

BACKGROUND: Odontomas are the most frequent odontogenic tumors in the oral cavity and can result in failure of eruption of permanent teeth or be associated with impacted teeth. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The present study evaluated the prevalence of complex and compound odontomas in non-syndromic patients prior to the onset of orthodontic treatment. Panoramic radiographs of 4,267 non-syndromic patients were evaluated; 22 cases were included being 54.5% complex and 45.4% compound odontomas. RESULTS: The sample was composed predominantly by White males with mean age of 14.5 years. Complex odontomas

Anxiolysis in the Surgical Management of a Compound Odontoma in a Pediatric Patient.

Among odontogenic tumors, odontoma is the most frequent. The common treatment contemplates a conservative approach. While this procedure is generally accepted and tolerated, some difficulties may be encountered in the case of pediatric patients. Indeed, negative feelings of tension, apprehension, nervousness, and fear are likely to occur. The present report is aimed at discussing the management of a compound odontoma in a pediatric patient under anxiolysis with diazepam on an outpatient basis. The surgery was carried out without complications, and the discharge was completed safely. Oral preme

Patients with SATB2-associated syndrome exhibiting multiple odontomas.

Special AT-rich sequence-binding protein 2 (SATB2)-associated syndrome (SAS) is characterized by alterations of SATB2. Its clinical features include intellectual disability and craniofacial abnormalities, such as cleft palate, dysmorphic features, and dental abnormalities. Here, we describe three previously undiagnosed, unrelated patients with SAS who exhibited dental abnormalities, including multiple odontomas. Although isolated odontomas are common, multiple odontomas are rare. Individuals in families 1 and 3 underwent whole-exome sequencing. Patient 2 and parents underwent targeted amplicon

Eruption of odontomas into the oral cavity: a report of 2 cases.

Odontomas are the commonest odontogenic tumors of the oral cavity and are by nature asymptomatic. They consist mainly of dental tissue that may or may not be arranged in an orderly fashion. Their presence is often detected accidentally or due to the presence of a dental disturbance such as an unerupted tooth. The very rarity of odontomas erupting into the oral cavity validates the need for more current literature on the phenomenon. Our report of two cases aims to present and discuss the rare event of an erupting odontoma with the dental community.

A complex odontoma of the anterior maxilla associated with an erupting canine.

Many developmental anomalies of the jaw are accidentally diagnosed during radiographic investigations for other symptoms. Complex odontomas are odontogenic tumours, relatively rare in the anterior maxilla and generally asymptomatic. Frequently the odontoma may interfere with the eruption of teeth. This paper describes a case of complex odontoma in an 8-year-old girl, which resulted in the palatal displacement of the lateral incisor and an erupting permanent canine. A calcified mass was seen on the radiograph and was provisionally diagnosed as an odontoma which was surgically enucleated. Routin

Clinico-pathological study of odontomas in 19 Libyan patients.

BACKGROUND: Odontomas are among the most common benign odontogenic tumors, which are mostly discovered in the first and second decades of life with no clear sex predilection. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present retrospective study reviews the clinical, radiological, and the histopathological characteristics of odontomas in 19 Libyan patients seen during the last 18 years in our department. RESULTS: Most odontomas in our study were discovered when they obstruct a tooth from an eruption at its normal eruption time although a few cases were noticed on routine radiological examination of the regi

Odontomas--silent tormentors of teeth eruption, shedding and occlusion.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Odontomas are the most common odontogenic tumours of the jaws, characterised by their slow growth and non-aggressive behaviour. They usually remain asymptomatic, and are diagnosed on routine radiographs. Clinically, they are often associated with delayed eruption or impaction of permanent teeth and retained primary teeth. The purpose of this paper is to review the literature and report two cases of odontomas. In the first case, a compound odontoma was associated with an unerupted maxillary permanent right central incisor, in an 11-year-old boy. In the second case, a 12-year-old girl had retain

Multiple supernumerary teeth and odontoma in the maxilla: A case report.

Most supernumerary impacted teeth are located in the anterior maxillary region. They are classified according to their form and location. Their presence may give rise to a variety of clinical problems. The detection of supernumerary teeth is best achieved by thorough clinical and radiographic examination. Their management should form part of a comprehensive treatment plan. This article presents an overview of the diagnostic problems associated with multiple supernumerary impacted teeth and includes a discussion of the classification, diagnosis, and management of this difficult clinical entity.
