Continued decrease of open surface water body area in Oklahoma during 1984-2015.

Oklahoma contains the largest number of manmade lakes and reservoirs in the United States. Despite the importance of these open surface water bodies to public water supply, agriculture, thermoelectric power, tourism and recreation, it is unclear how these water bodies have responded to climate change and anthropogenic water exploitation in past decades. In this study, we used all available Landsat 5 and 7 images (16,000 scenes) from 1984 through 2015 and a water index- and pixel-based approach to analyze the spatial-temporal variability of open surface water bodies and its relationship with cl

Case report: Emergence of autochthonous cutaneous leishmaniasis in northeastern Texas and southeastern Oklahoma.

Autochthonous human cases of leishmaniasis in the United States are uncommon. We report three new cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis and details of a previously reported case, all outside the known endemic range in Texas. Surveys for enzootic rodent reservoirs and sand fly vectors were conducted around the residences of three of the case-patients during the summer of 2006; female Lutzomyia anthophora sand flies were collected at a north Texas and southeast Oklahoma residence of a case-patient, indicating proximity of a suitable vector. Urban sprawl, climatologic variability, or natural expansion

A genotypically unique Babesia gibsoni-like parasite recovered from a dog in Oklahoma.

A small Babesia gibsoni-like parasite was identified and isolated as the cause of clinical babesiosis in a dog from Oklahoma. Because this was potentially the first documented case of B. gibsoni infection in Oklahoma, further characterization was warranted, and the 18S nuclear small subunit ribosomal RNA gene was sequenced. Sequence comparison with other piroplasms from dogs showed significant nucleotide sequence differences between this isolate and both B. canis and B. gibsoni. These findings demonstrate that in domestic dogs in North America there are at least 2 "small" B. gibsoni-like organ

Micro- and Macroenvironment and Habitat Influences on Tick Abundance in Oklahoma City Urban Parks.

Most studies on tick-borne diseases in the United States have focused on suburban and rural areas, leaving a gap in understanding risks in cities, where environmental conditions and human-tick interactions differ. Recent research has examined microhabitat effects on tick abundance but are limited in spatial and temporal scope. Tick behavior, such as host seeking, is shaped by local environmental factors and remains underexplored in urban landscapes. Integrating Earth observations of macroenvironmental and habitat conditions may improve our understanding of urban tick ecology. We hypothesize th

Wastewater surveillance as a tool for understanding West Nile virus transmission and distribution in Oklahoma.

West Nile Virus (WNV) is the most widespread and frequently reported mosquito-borne disease in the US, with a high risk of outbreaks. Accurate surveillance of WNV is complicated by many mild or asymptomatic infections, resulting in human cases being under-reported and disease distribution and transmission not being well understood. In this study, we investigated how wastewater surveillance can be used for monitoring WNV in Oklahoma. We analyzed samples collected from wastewater treatment facilities in 16 counties during July 1 to September 31, 2023, for the presence of WNV genetic material and

Factors Associated with Populations of Plant-Parasitic Nematodes in Bentgrass Putting Greens in Oklahoma.

Numerous genera of plant-parasitic nematodes are frequently present at high populations in golf course putting greens. The objectives of this research were to identify and quantify plant-parasitic nematodes from Oklahoma bentgrass putting greens and to characterize specific soil physical and chemical features and management factors that may account for differences in or associated with the observed nematode populations. In the fall of 2000, nematodes were identified from 99 individual bentgrass putting greens sampled from 46 different locations in Oklahoma. In addition to green age and bentgra

Care of acute myocardial infarction in Oklahoma: an update from the Cooperative Cardiovascular Project.

Acute myocardial infarction remains a common cause of morbidity and mortality in Oklahoma. Nearly 6,000 Oklahoma Medicare beneficiaries are admitted to the hospital with an acute myocardial infarction each year. The death rate from coronary heart disease in Oklahoma is one of the highest in the nation. Utilizing structured medical record review, we have evaluated care given to 6,104 Medicare beneficiaries with acute myocardial infarction in 1994, 1996, and 1998. Since 1994, there have been significant improvements in the use of aspirin and beta-blockers at discharge, and avoidance of calcium c

Vaginal birth after cesarean section: a comparison of rural and metropolitan rates in Oklahoma.

The rate of cesarean delivery has risen steadily over the past fifteen years from a rate of 17% in 1980 to 24% in 1995. In an effort to curb medical expenses and reduce the risk associated with operative delivery, many suggestions have been proposed to reduce the rate of cesarean sections. The most promising of these is to reduce the number of repeat cesarean deliveries through vaginal birth after cesarean section (VBAC). For fifteen years the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology has proposed VBAC as a safe alternative to repeat C-section. VBAC carries a 1% to 2% risk of uterine ruptu

Clinical experience with HIV-infected patients at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center.

Two hundred seventy-two patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) have received care from the members of the adult infectious disease section at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. The majority of these patients met the diagnostic criteria for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. This group of patients was characterized by relatively few parenteral drug abusers, a high incidence of disseminated histoplasmosis, and an unexpectedly low frequency of toxoplasmosis. The prevalence of risk behaviors and endemic disease may be responsible for these particular case distri

Potential ecological distribution of Cytauxzoon felis in domestic cats in Oklahoma, Missouri, and Arkansas.

The ecological distribution of Cytauxzoon felis, an often-fatal tick-borne apicomplexan that infects domestic cats, has not been evaluated or identified despite its continued emergence. Infection of C. felis is characterized by lethargy, icterus, fever, anorexia, anemia, and death. The natural vertebrate reservoir of C. felis is the bobcat (Lynx rufus). To determine the possible distribution of C. felis in three states where infection is common (Oklahoma, Missouri, and Arkansas), two separate approaches to ecological niche modeling were implemented. First, a model relating several different cl

Cytauxzoonosis in domestic cats: report of two cases in Oklahoma, with a review and discussion of the disease.

In 2 cases of cytauxzoonosis in domestic cats in Oklahoma, the clinical features, gross lesions, and microscopic findings were of similar nature and degree to those previously reported by others, both in the naturally occurring and experimentally induced disease. Intraerythrocytic forms of Cytauxzoon felis organisms were demonstrated in stained blood smears from one cat. Blood from the other cat was not examined. The diagnosis was established by the finding of schizonts in endothelial-associated macrophages within vascular channels in tissues from both cats.

Human Cutaneous Myiasis by the Australian Sheep Blowfly, Lucilia cuprina (Diptera: Calliphoridae), in Oklahoma.

This case report describes an incident of myiasis in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Paramedics treated a 53-year-old man in the field when he suffered cardiac arrest. He was intubated by the paramedics and transported to an emergency room, where he received two stents and a balloon pump. He was found to have a GCS of three and remained in the hospital for 7 days before passing away. After his death, the breathing tube was removed, revealing the presence of several maggots. On closer inspection, the dipteran larvae were found in both the oral and nasal cavities. Four of these larvae were reared to ad

Baseline ambient gaseous ammonia concentrations in the Four Corners area and eastern Oklahoma, USA.

Ambient ammonia monitoring using Ogawa passive samplers was conducted in the Four Corners area and eastern Oklahoma, USA during 2007. The resulting data will be useful in the multipollutant management of ozone, nitrogen oxides, and visibility (atmospheric regional haze) in the Four Corners area, an area with growing oil/gas production and increasing coal-based power plant construction. The passive monitoring data also add new ambient ammonia concentration information for the U.S. and will be useful to scientists involved in present and future visibility modeling exercises. Three week integrate

Lower-extremity amputation. Incidence, risk factors, and mortality in the Oklahoma Indian Diabetes Study.

Oklahoma Indians with NIDDM (n = 1012) underwent a baseline examination in 1972-1980. The incidence of and risk factors for first lower-extremity amputation were estimated. The mortality rates of amputees using data from 875 patients who had no previous history of amputation and who underwent follow-up examination between 1987 and 1991 are presented. The mean age of the 875 patients was 51.6 +/- 10.8 yr, and the mean duration of diabetes was 6.6 +/- 6.1 yr. After a mean follow-up time of 9.9 +/- 4.3 yr, the incidence rate of first LEA among diabetic Oklahoma Indians was 18.0/1000 person-yr. Th
