Abdominal chemo- and mechanosensitivity in ruminants and its role in the control of food intake.

Ruminant animals have evolved a large and complex set of stomachs which allow fermentation of fibrous food by symbiotic micro-organisms. These stomachs are well innervated and generate signals which are thought to be important in the control of voluntary food intake. Tension receptors in the muscular wall of the rumen and reticulum are slowly adapting and provide a measure of distension while epithelial receptors are rapidly adapting and provide information on the fibrousness of the digesta; they are involved in the control of stomach motility and voluntary food intake in order to prevent exce

Gastrointestinal Biogeography of Luminal Microbiota and Short-Chain Fatty Acids in Sika Deer (Cervus nippon).

The gut microbiota of sika deer has been widely investigated, but the spatial distribution of symbiotic microbes among physical niches in the gastrointestinal tract remains to be established. While feces are the most commonly used biological samples in these studies, the accuracy of fecal matter as a proxy of the microbiome at other gastrointestinal sites is as yet unknown. In the present study, luminal contents obtained along the longitudinal axis of deer gastrointestinal tract (rumen, reticulum, omasum, abomasum, small intestine, cecum, colon, and rectum) were subjected to 16S rRNA gene sequ

[Mixing and propulsion of the contents of the reticulo-rumen].

Roughage intake and digestion by ruminants involve complex interactions between the roughage constituents, the microorganisms in the reticulo-rumen (RR) and its motility. Ruminal digestion requires intense activity, ie comminution of feed particles and mixing and propulsion of digesta. The regular repetition of the contraction sequences in the RR every 50 to 70 s subjects the digesta to a consistent pattern of movements. The particles are distributed according to their functional density which depends on the density of the plant structure of the particle, the liquid inside the particle and als

Characteristics of the gastrointestinal tract and volatile fatty acids in plateau ruminants.

High-altitude ruminants face environmental stressors such as low temperature, hypoxia, and short grazing seasons, which challenge energy acquisition and nutrient absorption. The gastrointestinal tract (GIT) plays a central role in metabolic adaptation. In this study, we collected contents from the rumen, reticulum, omasum, abomasum, duodenum, jejunum, cecum, and rectum of Pamir yaks. Microbial composition and metabolic functions across GIT regions were investigated through volatile fatty acid (VFA) determination and 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The results showed that the total VFA concentrations

Longitudinal investigations of anatomical and morphological development of the gastrointestinal tract in goats from colostrum to postweaning.

The digestive tract development in goat kids around weaning is vital to the establishment of digestion and absorption function, growth, and health of adults. The objective was to explore the effects of age and solid feed on the anatomical and morphological development of the gastrointestinal tract of Laiwu Black goat kids. Forty-eight female Laiwu Black goats at 8 ages (1, 7, 14, 28, 42, 56, 70, and 84 d; 6 goats per group) were selected and killed for anatomical and morphological analysis. The goats experienced the following 4 diet phases: maternal colostrum (MC; d 1, d 7), maternal milk (MM;

Gastrointestinal tract development in red deer (Cervus elaphus) calves from 1 to 12 months of age.

This study provides a detailed description of the development of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of farmed red deer (Cervus elaphus) calves over the first 12 months of age. GIT development was measured using a combination of computerised tomography (CT) scanning and traditional slaughter plus dissection techniques. Red deer calves of a known birth date were randomly assigned to two treatment groups. A group of five animals were repeatedly CT scanned at 31, 63, 92, 135, 207, 275 and 351 days of age to identify GIT organs and determine their volume. From a group of 20 animals, subsets of four i

Invited review: Use of butyrate to promote gastrointestinal tract development in calves.

Promotion of microbial butyrate production in the reticulorumen is a widely used method for enhancing forestomach development in calves. Additional acceleration of gastrointestinal tract (GIT) development, both the forestomach and lower parts of the GIT (e.g., abomasum, intestine, and also pancreas), can be obtained by dietary butyrate supplementation. For this purpose, different sources (e.g., butyrate salts or butyrins), forms (e.g., protected or unprotected), methods (e.g., in liquid feed or solid feed), and periods (e.g., before or after weaning) of butyrate administration can be used. Bioavailability of different sources and doses of zinc using stable isotopes in weaned male Holstein calves.

Trace minerals are an important component of ruminant nutrition. Furthermore, understanding the bioavailability of various trace mineral sources is essential for accurate dietary formulation. The objective of this trial was to determine the suitability of stable isotopes as a marker of bioavailability and the bioavailability of zinc when provided in either an inorganic or organic form to ruminating Holstein calves. Eighteen weaned male Holstein calves were used in a randomized complete block design. Calves were fed a basal diet formulated to meet nutrient requirements, offered as a texturized

The rumen liquid metatranscriptome of post-weaned dairy calves differed by pre-weaning ruminal administration of differentially-enriched, rumen-derived inocula.

BACKGROUND: Targeted modification of the dairy calf ruminal microbiome has been attempted through rumen fluid inoculation to alter productive phenotypes later in life. However, sustainable effects of the early life interventions have not been well studied, particularly on the metabolically active rumen microbiota and its functions. This study investigated the sustained effects of adult-derived rumen fluid inoculations in pre-weaning dairy calves on the active ruminal microbiome of post-weaned dairy calves analyzed via RNA-sequencing. RESULTS: Two different adult-derived microbial inocula (bac

Whole corn grain utilisation in dairy goats is determined by rumen retention rather than intestinal digestive capacity.

The small intestinal starch digestion of ruminants is limited, potentially due to inadequate pancreatic α-amylase secretion. Previous studies confirmed that leucine stimulates amylase release. But the core scientific problem remains whether increasing intestinal amylase availability can improve dry whole corn (DWC) utilisation, and which digestive site dominates DWC starch digestion in goats. This study aimed to verify the effects of rumen-protected leucine (RP-Leu) and amylase (RP-Amy) on DWC utilisation of goats, and identify the primary site of starch digestion. In Experiment 1, eighteen ca

Ruminal and post-ruminal phytate degradation of diets containing rapeseed meal or soybean meal.

This study aimed to investigate ruminal and post-ruminal degradation of phytic acid (InsP6) in diets containing either rapeseed meal (RSM) or soybean meal (SBM). In Experiment 1, the effective degradability of crude protein (CPED) and InsP6 (InsP6ED) was evaluated by incubating RSM and SBM in situ in three rumen-fistulated lactating Jersey cows for 2, 4, 6, 8, 16, 24, 48 and 72 h, and calculating effective degradability at rumen passage rates of 2% and 5%/h. In Experiment 2, eight wethers were assigned for 8 weeks to two dietary treatments (Diet RSM and Diet SBM) containing 150 g of either mea

Flow paths of plant tissue residues and digesta through gastrointestinal segments in Spanish goats and methodological considerations.

A sequence of eight twice-daily meals, each marked with different rare earth elements, was fed to 24 Spanish goats (BW = 20.6 +/- 1.94 kg) to produce meal-based profiles of rare earth markers within segments of the gastrointestinal digesta on subsequent slaughter. Accumulative mean residence time and time delay of rare earths and segmental and accumulative mean residence times of indigestible NDF (IDF) were estimated for each sampled segment. Diets consisted of ad libitum access to bermudagrass hay with a limit feeding of one of four supplements: 1) minerals (basal, B); 2) B + energy (E); 3) B

Invited review: Current perspectives on eating and rumination activity in dairy cows.

Many early studies laid the foundation for our understanding of the mechanics of chewing, the physiological role of chewing for the cow, and how chewing behavior is affected by dietary characteristics. However, the dairy cow has changed significantly over the past decades, as have the types of diets fed and the production systems used. The plethora of literature published in recent years provides new insights on eating and ruminating activity of dairy cows. Lactating dairy cows spend about 4.5 h/d eating (range: 2.4-8.5 h/d) and 7 h/d ruminating (range: 2.5-10.5 h/d), with a maximum total chew

Net portal appearance used to assess feed evaluation system predictions of the digestive flow and gut metabolism of essential amino acids in dairy cows: A meta-analysis.

Accurate prediction of intestinal digestible flows of EAA (DigFlowEAA) is a crucial step for adequately balancing EAA supply to reduce the amount of CP fed to dairy cows, without compromising either milk production or the health status of the animals. The objective of this meta-analysis was to compare the performance of 3 dairy feed evaluation systems (FES) to predict DigFlowEAA (NRC; National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine [NASEM]; and Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System version 6.5.5 [CNCPS]) in relation to observed net portal appearance (NPAobs) of EAA.
