Brucellosis is a highly infectious zoonotic disease of global significance due to its adverse impact on public health, economics, and trade. Despite being one of the most prevalent zoonoses worldwide, attention given to global brucellosis control and prevention has been inadequate. Brucella species of greatest one-health relevance in the US include those infecting dogs (Brucella canis), swine (Brucella suis), and cattle and domestic bison (Brucella abortus). Although not endemic in the US, Brucella melitensis warrants awareness as it poses a risk to international travelers. While brucellosis h

The "One Health" concept is a universal approach to sustainably balancing and optimizing the health of humans, animals, and ecosystems. This approach is based on the health of humans, domestic and wild animals, and plants in a wider environment in which self-renewable ecosystems exist, with essential characteristics of integration, unifying and holistic perspective. Toxoplasmosis, one of the most common zoonotic infections in both terrestrial and oceanic ecosystems in the world, is an ideal model disease for the "One Health" approach. Toxoplasmosis is a zoonotic disease caused by the obligate

This perspective aims to 1) examine the WHA78's contributions to health promotion, equity, and analyze their implications for reducing disparities, and 2) propose actionable strategies to navigate implementation challenges and emphasize global solidarity in the achievement of 'health for all'. The WHA78 has prioritized social determinants, community empowerment, equitable health access, and climate-resilient health systems. Strengthening health systems and addressing equity can be further complemented by the Pandemic Treaty's enforceable compliance mechanisms. Further, the WHA allocated 20% of

Despite the significant health risks associated with Dermanyssus gallinae infestations in humans, they are often overlooked. This study investigated a household case of D. gallinae infestation and explored the resulting clinical manifestations and risk of infection in family members. Microfluidic PCR was employed for high-throughput screening of pathogens in collected mites and blood samples from both chickens and family members. Morphological and molecular examinations confirmed the identity of the mites as D. gallinae sensu stricto (s.s.), with evidence indicating recent blood feeding. Resul

To effectively reduce health risks at the animal-human-ecosystems interface, a One Health strategy is crucially important to create strong national and regional animal health systems that are well coordinated with strong public health systems. Animal diseases, particularly those caused by new and emerging zoonotic pathogens, must be effectively controlled at their source to reduce their potentially devastating impact upon both animal and human health. As the international organisation responsible for developing standards, guidelines and recommendations for animal health, the World Organisation

BACKGROUND: Climate change is intensifying public health risks and placing increasing pressure on disaster medicine systems. These challenges require adaptation strategies that incorporate climate justice principles and the One Health framework.
OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aimed to examine how climate justice and One Health principles are incorporated into public health and disaster medicine adaptation policies.
METHODS: A scoping review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) guideline us

BACKGROUND: Globally, the threat of infectious diseases, particularly emerging infectious diseases, originating at the human-animal-environment interface, has caught health systems off guard. With forecasts that future pathogen emergence will be centred in hotspots in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, the need to prepare policy frameworks that can combat this threat is urgent.
DISCUSSION: Emergence of diseases such as avian influenza and Ebola virus disease, which threatened social disruption, have established the need for intersectoral coordination/collaboration. These events led to the initi

The French Committee for Monitoring and Anticipating Health Risks (COVARS) has been strengthening the One Health approach through its interdisciplinary and multi-sectoral composition, the emerging risks it addresses (Covid-19, Mpox, vector-borne diseases, avian influenza…), its holistic approach to risks and its position at the science-decision interface.

The One Health concept emphasizes the interdependence of human, animal, and ecosystem health. Against this broad backdrop, bile acids (BAs), as central products of host-microbiota co-metabolism, act far beyond their classical role in lipid emulsification. This review systematically summarizes BA biosynthesis, enterohepatic circulation, and gut microbiota-mediated metabolic modification. We highlight how gut microbiota-derived secondary BAs and farnesoid X receptor and Takeda G protein-coupled receptor 5-mediated BA signaling together shape BA homeostasis, glucose and lipid metabolism, intestin

One Health approaches are becoming increasingly necessary in the world we live in. Human beings, animals, plants and the environment are intrinsically interconnected and when some intervention occurs, mainly through the action of man himself, everyone suffers the consequences. The objective of this review was to collect data about the occurrence and dispersion of Naegleria fowleri, an amphizoic free-living amoeba, and its implications for health approaches through the One Health concept. N. fowleri is an opportunistic amoeba, better known as brain-eating amoeba, which causes Primary Amoebic Me

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is recognized as one of the most urgent global health threats, demanding coordinated, multisectoral responses under the OH framework. Among the multidisciplinary tasks aimed at collectively tackling the AMR crisis, surveillance, research and education stand as major priorities. Education is a strategic pillar of the World Health Organization Global Action Plan, yet a comprehensive synthesis of educational initiatives explicitly grounded in One Health (OH) remains limited. Previous reviews have examined AMR educational interventions focusing on specific strategies

In this review, the virulence factors involved in enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) colonization and pathogenesis are analyzed, with an emphasis on colonization factors, enterotoxins and antigenic diversity as central challenges in vaccine development. ETEC remains a major cause of diarrhea worldwide, particularly in vulnerable populations. Despite extensive research, no broadly protective licensed vaccines are available largely because of antigenic heterogeneity and the limited understanding of immune correlates of protection. We identified critical knowledge gaps in antigen prioritizat

Global environmental change, biodiversity loss, emerging infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, and widening social inequalities increasingly interact to create complex risks for human, animal, and ecosystem health. Although international One Health frameworks and funding mechanisms are essential, implementation at national and especially community levels often remains uneven, fragmented, and weakly evaluated. This Perspective presents a structured, reproducible networking model designed to strengthen community-level One Health implementation through voluntary global collaboration amon

Vaccines are typically designed either for human or veterinary use. Using One Health principles it would be more efficient to develop a single vaccine to cover all animal and human species at threat from a specific pathogen. A major issue for designing One Health vaccines is that some commonly used human adjuvants such as aluminium salts are not suitable for some animal species, such as felines, where they can cause injection site sarcomas. Conversely, some commonly used animal adjuvants such as mineral oil emulsions are too reactogenic to be used in humans. In addition, species-specific diffe

Antibiotics are increasingly prevalent in global environments, driving antimicrobial resistance and disrupting microbial cycling. These impacts pose threats to human, animal, and environmental health. Therefore, addressing this emergent issue necessitates a One Health framework that integrates these interconnected dimensions. Here we systematically review 137 antibiotics across diverse global environmental compartments. We find that sulfonamides, macrolides, quinolones, and tetracyclines are globally ubiquitous, particularly prevalent in Asia and Africa, whereas β-lactams dominates in Europe.

Rabies, due to infection with the Lyssavirus of the Rhabdoviridae, is a virtually 100% lethal viral illness acquired mostly by bites from an infected animal, particularly by dogs, but also cattle, goats, cats, and feral animals like bats and foxes. The virus has a 1-3-month incubation period and infects the central nervous system, manifesting as either encephalitic rabies (hydrophobia, excitability, hypersalivation) or paralytic rabies (increasing muscle weakness, paralysis, coma). One documented case in Pakistan was a 18-year-old farmer who was bitten by his rabid cow, probably from a stray d

BACKGROUND: Africa sees the surge of plague cases in recent decades, with hotspots in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Madagascar, and Peru. A rodent-borne scourge, the bacterial infection known as plague is transmitted to humans via the sneaky bites of fleas, caused by Yersinia pestis. Bubonic plague has a case fatality rate of 20.8% with treatment, but in places such as Madagascar the mortality rate can increase to 40-70% without treatment.

Although sporotrichosis requires a broad approach for control, few reports have described the relationship between the index case and secondary contacts. In the present work, we report an outbreak involving a woman, a dog, and two cats from the same household environment, including the clinical and epidemiological aspects and outcomes, and discuss the importance of a One Health approach to face this neglected disease. The joint efforts of professionals such as veterinarians and physicians are essential for early diagnosis and surveillance, which contributes to the rapid identification and cont
