Novel Ehrlichia and Hepatozoon genotypes in white-eared opossums (Didelphis albiventris) and associated ticks from Brazil.

White-eared opossums (Didelphis albiventris) are well adapted to anthropized areas. The increased contact with domestic animals and humans mediates the transmission of arthropod-borne pathogens. Despite the worldwide occurrence of tick-borne Anaplasmataceae and Hepatozoidae species in a variety of vertebrates, few studies reported serological evidence or molecular detection of theses agentes in marsupials. Up to now, while Ehrlichia/Anaplasma spp. have only been detected in marsupials from Brazil, Hepatozoon spp. have been reported in marsupials from Chile, Australia and Brazil. The present wo

Perinatal exposure to progesterone, estradiol, or mifepristone affects sexual differentiation of behavior in opossums (Monodelphis domestica).

The effects of perinatal exposure to progesterone (P) and estradiol (E) on sexual differentiation of behavior and morphology were examined by treating male and female gray short-tailed opossums on postnatal day 8 with progesterone alone (P), P plus estradiol (E) (PE), the P receptor antagonist mifepristone/RU486 (MIF), or corn oil control (C) and gonadectomizing them before puberty. When given female hormone replacement therapy in adulthood and tested with intact stimulus males, MIF animals showed less female-typical aggressive threat behavior than animals in other treatment groups. Pyometra with Concurrent Endometrial Adenocarcinoma in Laboratory Opossums (Monodelphis domestica): A Case Series of Four Animals.

The use of laboratory opossums (Monodelphis domestica) in biomedical research has increased since the 1980s, when the first colonies were established in the United States, due to their relatively low maintenance requirements and cyclical breeding patterns resulting in reproductive efficiency. Despite their growing use, reproductive disorders in this species remain poorly characterized. A 2.5-year-old female laboratory opossum was euthanized for humane reasons after presenting lethargy, inappetence, and a severely distended abdomen. Gross necropsy revealed marked uterine enlargement. Cytologic

Detection of Trypanosoma cruzi in white-eared opossums (Didelphis albiventris) from Canoinhas, Santa Catarina State, Brazil1.

Opossums are synanthropic animals that participate in the zoonotic transmission cycles. Chagas disease, a neglected tropical disease caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, affects many domestic and wild animals and humans worldwide. This study aimed to determine the occurrence of T. cruzi in free-ranging opossums in Canoinhas, Santa Catarina, Brazil. Fifty opossums (Didelphis albiventris) (33 captured and 17 road-killed) were evaluated using Nested-PCR assay. All tissue samples were negative (0/17). Eight of the 33 (24.24%; 95% CI:11.94-40,89%) blood samples were positive for T. cruzi. No significant as

Ancestrally Reconstructed von Willebrand Factor Reveals Evidence for Trench Warfare Coevolution between Opossums and Pit Vipers.

Opossums in the tribe Didelphini are resistant to pit viper venoms and are hypothesized to be coevolving with venomous snakes. Specifically, a protein involved in blood clotting (von Willebrand factor [vWF] which is targeted by snake venom C-type lectins [CTLs]) has been found to undergo rapid adaptive evolution in Didelphini. Several unique amino acid changes in vWF could explain their resistance; however, experimental evidence that these changes disrupt binding to venom CTLs was lacking. Furthermore, without explicit testing of ancestral phenotypes to reveal the mode of evolution, the assert

High prevalence of Ancylostoma caninum infection in black-eared opossums (Didelphis aurita) in an urban environment.

Marsupials of the genus Didelphis, such as black-eared opossums (Didelphis aurita), are common synanthropic animals in urban areas of Brazil. These marsupials are frequently parasitized by numerous helminth species, including ancylostomatid nematodes. This study aimed to report the occurrence of Ancylostoma caninum in black-eared opossums captured in an urban environment of Southeastern Brazil and discuss the potential impact of these findings for public health. From January to June 2019, we collected fecal samples from 49 restrained opossums and evaluated by a simple flotation method; Helmint

Behavioural observations of singly-housed grey short-tailed opossums (Monodelphis domestica) in standard and enriched environments.

The grey short-tailed opossum (Monodelphis domestica) has been used in biomedical research for over three decades. It is normally housed in standard rat cages and appears to have adapted well to captivity. Owing to their aggressive behaviour towards each other, adult males are normally housed singly and may spend considerable periods of time in social isolation. We wanted to carry out a preliminary study on the behaviour of singly-housed male short-tailed opossums in two different settings: a standard rat cage and an enriched floor pen. Five male opossums aged between 10 and 12 weeks were hous

Effect of enteric hormones on sphincter of Oddi and gastrointestinal myoelectric activity in fasted conscious opossums.

In this study we evaluated the effect of enteric hormones on sphincter of Oddi and gastrointestinal spike burst frequency in fasted conscious opossums. A chronic model for obtaining multiple long-term recording of sphincter of Oddi and gastrointestinal myoelectric activity was prepared in 12 animals by implanting bipolar electrodes in the gastric antrum, duodenum, sphincter of Oddi, jejunum, and ileum. Subsequently, 8-18 recording session, 6-8 h in length, were obtained in each animal. Each study was preceded by a 15-h fast. After recording two cycles of the interdigestive migratory myoelectri

Ontogeny of the masticatory muscles in the opossum Didelphis albiventris (Marsupialia, Didelphimorphia, Didelphidae).

Opossums (marsupials of the Didelphidae family) retain a generalized masticatory apparatus and tribosphenic molars, often used as models to understand the evolution of mastication in early therian mammals. Like all marsupials, their growth goes through a stage when pups complete their development while permanently attached to the mother's teats before weaning and starting feeding on their own. Yet, while the masticatory muscles of adults are known, as is the ontogeny of the cranium and mandible, the ontogenetic changes in the masticatory muscles remain unknown. Here we describe for the first t

The impact of botfly parasitism on the health of the gracile mouse opossum (Gracilinanus agilis).

Fragmented habitats generally harbour small populations that are potentially more prone to local extinctions caused by biotic factors such as parasites. We evaluated the effects of botflies (Cuterebra apicalis) on naturally fragmented populations of the gracile mouse opossum (Gracilinanus agilis). We examined how sex, food supplementation experiment, season and daily climatic variables affected body condition and haemoglobin concentration in animals that were parasitized or not by botflies. Although parasitism did not affect body condition, haemoglobin concentrations were lower in parasitized

Didelphis albiventris: an overview of unprecedented transcriptome sequencing of the white-eared opossum.

BACKGROUND: The white-eared opossum (Didelphis albiventris) is widely distributed throughout Brazil and South America. It has been used as an animal model for studying different scientific questions ranging from the restoration of degraded green areas to medical aspects of Chagas disease, leishmaniasis and resistance against snake venom. As a marsupial, D. albiventris can also contribute to the understanding of the molecular mechanisms that govern the different stages of organogenesis. Opossum joeys are born after only 13 days, and the final stages of organogenesis occur when the neonates are

Development of NADPH-diaphorase expression in chemosensory systems of the opossum, Monodelphis domestica.

Using NADPH-diaphorase histochemistry, the present study describes development of olfactory and vomeronasal systems in postnatal opossums, Monodelphis domestica. NADPH-dependent staining is absent at and around the time of birth. By 2 weeks of age and through adulthood, intense staining is seen along the luminal surface of the olfactory epithelium (OE) and of the vomeronasal sensory epithelium (VNE), as well as in Bowman's glands of the OE. Staining of the adult VNE is not homogeneous; it is restricted to the superficial 2/3 of the epithelium. At 2 weeks of age, staining in the brain is seen o

Graded effect of protein on regional myoelectric activity of the opossum sphincter of Oddi.

Although it is known that the sphincter of Oddi exhibits a myoelectric response to intraluminal nutrients, the effect of specific dietary components has not been well characterized. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of intragastric instillation of a protein meal on regional myoelectric activity of the opossum sphincter of Oddi. Seven adult opossums were chronically prepared with self-retaining bipolar electrodes secured to the proximal and distal parts of the sphincter. After a 2-week recovery period, and with the animals fasted and conscious, myoelectric activity was recorded

Characterization of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae isolated from an opossum (Didelphis virginiana) with septicemia.

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae was isolated from a wild-caught opossum (Didelphis virginiana). The opossum was quarantined in isolation and removed from contact with other animals. After a 2-mo period it was found dead in its cage, and presented for postmortem examination. Pure cultures of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae (SLU isolate) were recovered from heart blood, liver, spleen and lungs. To compare pathogenicity, an experimental infection was attempted in CF1 mice with a single dose of 1.5 x 10(7) organisms of both an ATCC standard strain and SLU isolate of E. rhusiopathiae. Similar signs, lesi

Effect of feeding on myoelectric activity of the sphincter of Oddi and the gastrointestinal tract in the opossum.

The effect of different foods on the myoelectric activity of the sphincter of Oddi and gastrointestinal tract was evaluated in the opossum. Gallbladder pressure was also recorded. Feeding fat and mixed food resulted in the greatest incidence of spike activity in the duodenum and jejunum, followed by protein. The lowest incidence of slow waves with spikes in the duodenum and jejunum followed feeding of carbohydrates (P less than 0.01). Likewise, the lowest spike activity in the sphincter of Oddi was observed after carbohydrate feeding (P less than 0.05). There was no significant difference in t

Evidence of 5-HT participation in vagal inhibitory pathway to opossum LES.

Studies were performed in anesthetized opossums to investigate the nature of vagal-stimulated sphincter relaxation, which is resistant to antagonism by a combination of hexamethonium and atropine. The sphincter pressures were measured with water-filled and continuously perfused catheters anchored in the lower esophageal sphincter. Neither increase in the doses of hexamethonium and atropine nor addition of diphenhydramine further modified the vagal response. However, administration of 5-methoxydimethyltryptamine in the presence of hexamethonium and atropine abolished vagally stimulated sphincte

Fine structure of the retinal epithelium and tapetum lucidum of the opossum (Didelphis virginiana).

The fine structure of the retinal epithelium has been studied by electron microscopy in the opossum (Didelphis virginiana). The retinal epithelium, over most of the retina, is typical of that in other vertebrates and consists of a single layer of heavily pigmented, cuboidal cells. These cells display extensive basal (scleral) infoldings and numerous apical (vitreal) processes which enclose photoreceptor outer segments. A semicircular area of the retinal epithelium in the superior fundus is further specialized as a tapetum lucidum. The reflecting material consists of a large quantity of lipoida
