Putative pathogenic factors underlying Streptococcus oralis opportunistic infections.

Streptococcus oralis, belonging to the viridans group streptococci (VGS), has been considered a component of the normal flora predominantly inhabiting the oral cavity. In recent years, a growing body of literature has revealed that dental procedures or daily tooth brushing activities can cause the spread of S. oralis from the oral cavity into various body sites leading to life-threatening opportunistic infections such as infective endocarditis (IE) and meningitis. However, very little is currently known about the pathogenicity of S. oralis. Thus, the aim of this review is to update the current

Thymoma with recurrent opportunistic infections-a case report.

Good's syndrome (GS) is a rare adult-onset thymoma associated with acquired combined B-cell and T-cell immunodeficiency. It has similarities with Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) in terms of hypogammaglobulinemia and significant risk of invasive bacterial and opportunistic infections. We still have a long way to go in understanding the pathogenesis of Good's syndrome. Here, we describe a case of a middle-aged female with thymoma and recurrent opportunistic infections. Clinico-laboratory evaluation led to a diagnosis of GS and she showed good response to intravenous immunoglobulin. Clini

Opportunistic Candida Infections in Critical COVID-19 Patients.

The frequency of opportunistic fungal infections in critically ill patients whose intensive care unit stays are prolonged due to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is higher than in the period before COVID-19. We planned this study to improve the management of Candida infections by defining the Candida species, the etiology of infections caused by Candida species, and the antifungal susceptibility of the species. This retrospective study included patients older than 18 hospitalized in the intensive care unit (ICU) with a definitive diagnosis of COVID-19 for seven months (from March 2021 to Se

Phototherapies for COVID-19-associated opportunistic oral infections.

Opportunistic infections are widely described in patients with novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19); however, very few studies have addressed those affecting the oral cavity. Given the lack of information on the clinical presentations and the available treatment options, the present study aimed to show a case in which a combination of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) and photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) was used for the management of two concomitant COVID-19-associated opportunistic oral infections (oral pseudomembranous candidiasis and recurrent herpes labialis). Within 7 days

Opportunistic infections in patients with idiopathic inflammatory myopathies.

AIM: To describe the prevalence, clinical characteristics and risk factors of opportunistic infection (OI) in a cohort of patients with inflammatory myopathies, and compare mortality rates between those with and without OIs. METHODS: In total, 204 patients from our myositis cohort were reviewed to identify patients who had experienced an OI during the period 1986-2014. The patients' clinical characteristics, treatments received, and outcomes were systematically recorded. Disease activity at the OI diagnosis and the cumulative doses of immunosuppressive drugs were analyzed, as well as the spec

Opportunistic infections due to inflammatory bowel disease therapy.

The use of biological agents and immunomodulators for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has remarkably improved disease management in the current era but at the same time has increased the risk of infectious complications. Patients with IBD on corticosteroids, immunomodulators, and biological agents are considered immunocompromised and are at risk for opportunistic infections. These are infections caused by organisms that take advantage of a weakened immune system, and cause disease, when they ordinarily would cause mild illness or no disease in an immunocompetent host. Risk factors for opportu

Opportunistic fungal infections in the Asia-Pacific region.

With more than half the world's population, many Asia-Pacific countries still lack resources for adequate infection control and diagnostics. Opportunistic invasive fungal infections (IFIs) have a significant impact on public health in the region, and early diagnosis and appropriate treatment remain important. The incidence of IFI in the Asia-Pacific region is increasing because of the expanded population of immunosuppressed patients resulting from advances in medical technology, such as treatments for cancer and transplantation, as well as the impact of human immunodeficiency virus. Even so, t

[Atypical and opportunistic pulmonary infections after cardiac surgery].

BACKGROUND: New diseases and therapies that lead to marked immunocompromise, have brought to medicine so-called opportunistic infections, caused by pathogens that usually do not cause disease in the presence of a healthy immune system. First diagnosed in AIDS patients, opportunistic infections have appeared in many other situations, including transplant recipients, other immunosuppressed patients, and even in otherwise healthy patients undergoing major elective surgery. Among the most common pathogens causing atypical infections are: Pneumocistis jiroveci, Chlamydia, Mycoplasma and Legionella.

[Highly Active AntiRetroviral Therapy and opportunistic protozoan infections].

Opportunistic parasite infections (OPIs) are an important cause of morbidity and mortality in persons infected with HIV. In industrialised countries, the use of Highly Active AntiRetroviral Therapy (HAART) results to be effective in suppressing the HIV viral load, with a quantitative and qualitative improvement in the CD4+ T-cell count followed by a strong reduction of opportunistic infections including those caused by parasites. These successes have been mainly attributed to the reconstitution of the cell immunity, which play the most important role in controlling OPIs. However, there are man

AIDS-related opportunistic infections in Hospital Kuala Lumpur.

We retrospectively reviewed 419 HIV/AIDS patients in Hospital Kuala Lumpur from 1994 to 2001. In the male group, the age range was 20-74, with a mean age 37 years, while in the female group it was 17-63, with a mean age of 33 years. With regard to age group, it was found that the preponderant age group was 25-34 years. The majority of male subjects were Chinese (52.5%), single (56.3%), and unemployed (55.1%), whereas the females were Malay (42.3%), married (79.5%), and non-laborer (64.1%). Also, both groups resided in Kuala Lumpur and had heterosexual contact as the leading cause of HIV transm

Opportunistic infections associated with HIV infection in Africa.

HIV-associated infections in sub-Saharan Africa differ markedly in their incidence from those in industrialized countries. Tuberculosis is the commonest cause of morbidity and mortality. Enteric pathogens such as microsporidiosis commonly cause disease as access to safe water is limited. Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, which is the commonest opportunistic infection in industrialized countries, is uncommon in adults with HIV infection. This remains unexplained because P. carinii pneumonia is common in Black African HIV-infected children. Cytomegalovirus and Mycobacterium avium complex, which on

AIDS related opportunistic infections, going but not gone.

It is now more than two decades since the AIDS epidemic began with a cluster of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) in a community of homosexual men. Since then, many other infections have been characterized as opportunistic infections secondary to HIV infection. These include, but are not limited to, infections with Toxoplasma gondii, Cytomegalovirus (CMV), Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC), and Cryptococcus neoformans. Over the last two decades, there have been dramatic improvements in diagnosis, prevention and treatment of all these infections. As a result, in North America and Western Eur
