Robust reconstruction of local optic axis orientation with fiber-based polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography.

It is challenging to recover local optic axis orientation from samples probed with fiber-based polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography (PS-OCT). In addition to the effect of preceding tissue layers, the transmission through fiber and system elements, and imperfect system alignment, need to be compensated. Here, we present a method to retrieve the required correction factors from measurements with depth-multiplexed PS-OCT, which accurately measures the full Jones matrix. The correction considers both retardation and diattenuation and is applied in the wavenumber domain, preserving t

Use of Optical Coherence Tomography to Detect Retinal Nerve Fiber Loss in Children With Optic Pathway Glioma.

Optic pathway glioma (OPG) presents in childhood and can cause significant morbidity and visual loss. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the current imaging modality of choice for evaluation of OPG progression, but it is a relatively limited resource often requiring sedation in the pediatric age group. Additionally, OPG progression on MRI does not always correlate with clinical progression. As a result, several other modalities for evaluating OPG are being investigated, including optical coherence tomography (OCT), a readily available imaging technique in ophthalmic practice. The purpose of t

Tenascin-R inhibits regrowth of optic fibers in vitro and persists in the optic nerve of mice after injury.

Tenascin-R, an extracellular matrix constituent expressed by oligodendrocytes and some neuronal cell types, may contribute to the inhibition of axonal regeneration in the adult central nervous system. Here we show that outgrowth of embryonic and adult retinal ganglion cell axons from mouse retinal explants is significantly reduced on homogeneous substrates of tenascin-R or a bacterially expressed tenascin-R fragment comprising the epidermal growth factor-like repeats (EGF-L). When both molecules are presented as a sharp substrate border, regrowing adult axons do not cross into the tenascin-R o

Ultra-dense, laser-welded, multi-core fiber-optic interfaces.

The packing density of fiber-optic interfaces is ultimately limited by the cladding diameter. We investigate direct laser welding of multi-core fibers as a means for overcoming this limit in constructing arbitrary-pitch arrayed optical interfaces. We demonstrate that submicron-precision laser welding, previously shown for single-core fibers, can be used to construct multicore fiber interfaces while fully preserving the beam quality of each core. This report describes the application of the new technique to 4- and 7-core fibers and quantifies the resulting beam quality to confirm laser welding

Nonlinear polarization effects in optical fiber-based extreme learning machines.

Extreme learning machines (ELMs) based on nonlinear propagation in optical fiber are a novel platform for unconventional computing. However, although experiments are showing promising results, there has been less work developing realistic models to study how such systems might exploit different experimental degrees of freedom. Here, we use numerical simulations of the coupled vectorial generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equations to present the first, to the best of our knowledge, study of fiber ELMs including polarization effects during propagation. Polarization evolution is found to significa

Soft biocompatible polymer optical fiber tapers for implantable neural devices.

Optical fibers are between the most common implantable devices for delivering light in the nervous system for optogenetics and infrared neural stimulation applications. Tapered optical fibers, in particular, can offer homogeneous light delivery to a large volume and spatially resolved illumination compared to standard flat-cleaved fibers while being minimally invasive. However, the use of tapers for neural applications has up to now been limited to silica optical fibers, whose large Young's modulus can cause detrimental foreign body response in chronic settings. Here, we present the fabricatio

Fluorescent Reporter-Based Fiber Optic Probe for Continuous Detection of Antibodies.

Measurement of antibody and antibody fusion protein concentration is vital for process development and manufacturing. Continuous, in-line monitoring of antibody concentration could be useful in a variety of applications, such as controlling the loading of protein A columns to prevent breakthrough, monitoring bioreactor titer, and detecting leaks past ultrafiltration/diafiltration membranes. Molecule-specific monitoring techniques are advantageous for antibody detection in cell culture fluid in the presence of complex process impurities. Here we report a continuous in-line, real-time IgG monito

Advancements in optical fiber-based wearable sensors for smart health monitoring.

Healthcare system is undergoing a significant transformation from a traditional hospital-centered to an individual-centered one, as a result of escalating chronic diseases, ageing populations, and ever-increasing healthcare costs,. Wearable sensors have become widely used in health monitoring systems since the COVID-19 pandemic. They enable continuous measurement of important health indicators like body temperature, wrist pulse, respiration rate, and non-invasive bio fluids like saliva and perspiration. Over the last few decades, the development has mostly concentrated on electrochemical and e

Real-time fiber-optic recording of acute-ischemic-stroke signatures.

We present an experimental framework and methodology for in vivo studies on rat stroke models that enable a real-time fiber-optic recording of stroke-induced hydrogen peroxide and pH transients in ischemia-affected brain areas. Arrays of reconnectable implantable fiber probes combined with advanced optogenetic fluorescent protein sensors are shown to enable a quantitative multisite time-resolved study of oxidative-stress and acidosis buildup dynamics as the key markers, correlates and possible drivers of ischemic stroke. The fiber probes designed for this work provide a wavelength-multiplex fo

Deep learning-based ballistocardiography reconstruction algorithm on the optical fiber sensor.

Ballistocardiography (BCG) is a vibration signal related to cardiac activity, which can be obtained in a non-invasive way by optical fiber sensors. In this paper, we propose a modified generative adversarial network (GAN) to reconstruct BCG signals by solving signal fading problems in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI). Based on this algorithm, additional modulators and demodulators are not needed in the MZI, which reduces the cost and hardware complexity. The correlation between reconstructed BCG and reference BCG is 0.952 in test data. To further test the model performance, we collect speci

Fiber-Optic System for Monitoring Pressure Changes on Mine Support Elements.

The paper presents the developed fiber-optic sensors for monitoring pressure measurement on the elements of mine supports. The sudden destruction of the support leads to the collapse of the mine workings and poses a serious threat to the life and safety of underground workers. A fiber-optic system for monitoring changes in pressures on the elements of mine supports will increase the share of mining automation and reduce the share of manual labor, as well as eliminate measurement errors associated with the human factor. Systematic monitoring of the state of the working elements of the support w

Optical Fiber Vibration Signal Identification Method Based on Improved YOLOv4.

In the traditional peripheral-security-early-warning system, the endpoint detection and pattern recognition of the signals generated by the distributed optical fiber vibration sensors is completed step-by-step and in an orderly manner. The method by which these two processes may be placed end-to-end in a network model and processed simultaneously to improve work efficiency has increasingly become the focus of research. In this paper, the target detection algorithm combines the endpoint-detection and pattern-recognition processes of the vibration signal, which can not only quickly locate the st

Simulation of nerve fiber based on anti-resonant reflecting optical waveguide.

Light and optical techniques are widely used for the diagnosis and treatment of neurological diseases as advanced methods. Understanding the optical properties of nervous tissue and nerve cells is vital. Using light sources in these methods raises significant challenges, such as finding the place of light transmission in nerve fibers that could be an appropriate substrate for neural signaling. The myelinated axons are a promising candidate for transmitting neural signals and light due to their waveguide structures. On the other hand, with the emergence of diseases such as multiple sclerosis an

Operation and robustness analysis of a star-bus optic fiber sensor network.

This paper proposes a star-bus topology optic fiber sensor network with an efficient mechanism for network communication to accomplish monitoring and protection operations. The master node scans each channel for its healthy conditions with an N * M optical switch, just as in time-division multiplexing, accomplishing a comprehensive monitoring of the whole sensor network. In addition, we analyze the impact of structural parameters on network robustness, then obtain a basic design principle of network topology. We also demonstrate the proposed network's feasibility by multiplexing different fibe

Sensitive Leptospira DNA detection using tapered optical fiber sensor.

This paper presents the development of tapered optical fiber sensor to detect a specific Leptospira bacteria DNA. The bacteria causes Leptospirosis, a deadly disease but with common early flu-like symptoms. Optical single mode fiber (SMF) of 125 μm diameter is tapered to produce 12 μm waist diameter and 15 cm length. The novel DNA-based optical fiber sensor is functionalized by incubating the tapered region with sodium hydroxide (NaOH), (3-Aminopropyl) triethoxysilane and glutaraldehyde. Probe DNA is immobilized onto the tapered region and subsequently hybridized by its complementary DNA (cDNA
