We present the imaging findings of retrobulbar optic nerve cysticercosis in a 50-year-old woman with a 6-month history of vision loss. Contrast-enhanced CT revealed an approximately 7-mm ring-enhancing cyst with a mural nodule located in the anterior portion of the left optic nerve. A contrast-enhanced MR imaging study revealed a cystic lesion with peripheral enhancement of the mural nodule. Sonography showed a cystic mass with a focal area of increased echogenicity corresponding to the mural nodule.

Imaging in neuro-ophthalmology is a major, developing field. Visual and motor ocular symptoms and signs are of diagnostic and localizing significance, and occur frequently in patients with brain space-occupying lesions. Knowledge of the anatomy of the optic pathways extending from the retina to the calcarine fissure throughout the brain is crucial. Multiplanar high resolution MR imaging permits the physician to depict the visual path with exquisite detail. This article provides a correlative regional anatomic and imaging atlas of the brain following the optic pathways, with reference to the mo

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has become an important diagnostic modality for the evaluation of patients with chiasmal or perichiasmal disease. In this review, normal chiasmal anatomy and various pathologic conditions will be illustrated to demonstrate the advantages of MRI over computed tomography (CT). MRI is the neuroimaging method of choice in chiasmal evaluation, but sometimes it may be complemented by CT scanning.

Optic disc drusen (ODD) are calcified deposits at the anterior optic nerve that are often detectable by ophthalmic imaging, including optical coherence tomography and fundus autofluorescence imaging. Multicolor (MC) imaging is a novel modality that captures reflectance of blue, green, and near-infrared laser lights with confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscopy to rapidly acquire high-resolution reflectance images of the optic disc and retina. Here, we show an eye with 3 MC imaging features of ODD, including prominent green hyperreflectance of the optic disc, green sheathing of the papillary and

This overview is especially intended for practitioners in ophthalmology. It focuses on how to handle diseases affecting the optic pathway with MRI in general and in particular. Several tables accompany this article, in order to illustrate the different MRI scanning protocols, properties of frequently used MRI sequences, as well as common pathologies to be found in the optic pathway. With the help of exemplary cases, the application and interpretation of MRI imaging will be shown. There is a tremendous variety of diseases influencing the optic pathway - which is why this article does not intend

Adaptive Optics (AO) retinal imaging has provided revolutionary tools to scientists and clinicians for studying retinal structure and function in the living eye. From animal models to clinical patients, AO imaging is changing the way scientists are approaching the study of the retina. By providing cellular and subcellular details without the need for histology, it is now possible to perform large scale studies as well as to understand how an individual retina changes over time. Because AO retinal imaging is non-invasive and when performed with near-IR wavelengths both safe and easily tolerated

Magnetic resonance imaging is the modality of choice to investigate patients with central nervous system diseases. In patients with optic neuritis, early MRI allows positive and differential diagnosis, and gives arguments for prognosis. The technique should be adapted for the exploration of visual pathways. Inflammatory optic neuritis is characterized by an early signal abnormality within the optic nerve, whereas optic nerve MRI is normal in the early phase of ischemic optic neuropathy. MRI also detects compressive and infiltrative lesions. Meningiomas are characterized by abnormalities within

OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to prospectively examine the optic nerves in patients with clinically severe unilateral optic neuritis, using routine spin-echo and magnetization transfer MR imaging.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: For 39 patients with such lesions, we calculated the magnetization transfer ratio along the involved intraorbital optic nerve and along the asymptomatic contralateral optic nerve in a mirror-image location. Magnetization transfer ratios were correlated with the imaging findings on routine spin-echo MR imaging.
RESULTS: Magnetization transfer ratios were decreased in 33 of the 3

Optic perineuritis, an uncommon variant of orbital pseudotumor, may be clinically indistinguishable from retrobulbar optic neuritis. Because treatment and prognosis for these two entities are different, early diagnosis is important. We report a case of a 47 year-old woman with clinical findings suggestive of retrobulbar optic neuritis, but whose magnetic resonance images suggested optic perineuritis. A dramatic clinical response to oral corticosteroids was observed. Optic perineuritis should be considered in cases of presumed retrobulbar optic neuritis. MRI may differentiate these two entities

This article describes the results of a study of the distance from the optic chiasm to the tuberculum sellae as seen on sagittal MR images. Measurements revealed an average chiasm-tuberculum distance of 3.8 mm (2.6 mm for females, 4.3 mm for males) and a sizable group in whom the distance was effectively zero. These results show a fairly close correlation with previous anatomic studies. The closer the chiasm is to the tuberculum, the earlier one may expect clinical manifestations of pituitary disease and the more difficult an intracranial surgical approach to the pituitary will be.

Septo-optic dysplasia is the diagnosis when optic nerve hypoplasia is seen in conjunction with dysgenesis of the septum pellucidum. Nearly two-thirds of these patients have hypothalamic-pituitary dysfunction, and half have schizencephaly. The disorder is difficult to classify because of the diversity of clinical and pathologic manifestations. Magnetic resonance images of 11 patients with clinical and radiographic evidence of septo-optic dysplasia were reviewed retrospectively. The "syndrome" appears to include two subsets of patients whose abnormalities have different embryogenesis and neuropa

Pneumonia, a lung-related illness often resulting from bacterial infection, requires quick and accurate identification, especially in intensive care situations. Optical endomicroscopy (OEM) offers a solution by providing real-time acquisition of in vivo and in situ optical biopsies, enhancing the speed of bacterial identification. However, the sheer volume of images produced by OEM for real-time analysis poses a significant challenge, potentially delaying critical treatments. Prior approaches to bacteria detection in OEM imagery have relied on unsupervised models. These models are hindered by

Between the optic nerve and its sheath is a small, CSF-filled space that communicates with the subarachnoid space of the brain. A technique for the radiographic opacification of the optic nerve subarachnoid space following the intrathecal injection of metrizamide was investigated in 8 dogs. The technique enabled indirect visualization of the optic nerves from the optic chiasm to the eyeball and of structures within the subarachnoid basal cisterns of the brain, including the optic chiasm, hypophysis, and blood vessels of the cerebral arterial circle. Displacement and obstruction of the optic ne

Continuous-wave near-infrared diffuse optical imaging (DOI) relies on accurate differential pathlength factors (DPFs) for quantitative chromophore estimation. Existing DPF definitions inherit formulation-dependent limitations that can introduce large errors in modified Beer-Lambert law (MBLL) analyses and associated inverse estimations. We propose two DPF formulations: an MBLL-based formulation derived directly from photon-transport statistics and an experimentally practical inverse-distance model that closely reproduces the results of the more rigorous MBLL-based formulation. These models are
