Giant photorefractive and photoexpansion effects in a van der Waals semiconductor.

Nanophotonics relies on precise nanoscale structuring, yet conventional fabrication techniques remain complex and costly. Layered van der Waals (vdW) materials, with their intrinsic anisotropy and high refractive indices, offer a promising route toward simplified nanostructuring and tunable optical functionality. However, no vdW material has previously been shown to exhibit a strong photorefractive effect-a key requirement for light-based modulation. Here, we report a giant photorefractive response (Δn up to 0.3) in crystalline arsenic trisulfide (As2S3), observed at low optical intensities. I

Rapid Water-Soluble Sacrificial Scaffolds for Unconstrained 3D Microfabrication via Two-Photon Lithography.

Two-photon lithography (TPL) enables high-resolution fabrication of complex microarchitectures but remains fundamentally constrained in realizing truly arbitrary three-dimensional geometries due to the lack of effective microscale support-removal strategies. Here, we report a universal sacrificial-support-assisted TPL approach enabled by a newly developed water-soluble (W-S) photoresist. The W-S photoresist integrates high printing resolution with rapid dissolution, allowing sacrificial scaffolds to be completely removed in mild aqueous media within 10 min. To the best of our knowledge, this r

Amplitude- and Phase-Programmable Dual-Color Photonic Chip for High-Contrast Structured Illumination Microscopy.

Advanced optical microscopy techniques, such as structured illumination microscopy (SIM), often rely on precise and complex illumination setups, which can be challenging to implement and maintain. Integrated optics can offer compact, stable, and easy-to-align alternatives, enabling efficient light manipulation for advanced imaging applications. We present an integrated photonic device that generates structured illumination patterns directly within an optical microscope. The device incorporates optical waveguides in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer configuration, generating two separate coherent p

Strongly Nonlinear Nanocavity Exciton Polaritons in Gate-Tunable Monolayer Semiconductors.

Achieving optical nonlinearities at ultralow light intensities in solid-state platforms is essential for advancing nonlinear and quantum photonic technologies. A promising approach involves coupling excitons to photons in optical cavities to create exciton polaritons, where effective photon-photon interactions are mediated by the intrinsic excitonic nonlinearity. However, realizing strong polariton nonlinearities within a scalable architecture remains a significant experimental challenge. Here, we demonstrate highly nonlinear two-dimensional exciton polaritons by coupling a charge-tunable MoSe

Reconfigurable Nonlinear Activation Using Low-Loss Ge3Sb2Te15 for Photonic Neural Networks.

The escalating demand for high-performance computing has spurred interest in integrated silicon photonics to overcome the constraints of traditional von Neumann architectures. Reconfigurable photonic devices with low optical loss, high-speed switching, and nonvolatile operation are essential especially for photonic neural networks. This study introduces a robust high-throughput methodology that serves as a primary engine for accelerating compositional search within the ternary Ge-Sb-Te (GST) system. Through this approach, we unveiled Ge3Sb2Te15 (GST3215), a novel optical phase-change material

Microfacet-based physics-driven framework for single-photon LiDAR rough-surface scattering and detection.

The scattering characteristics of rough surfaces play a fundamental role in single-photon LiDAR, remote sensing, and optical target characterization. Conventional electromagnetic models describe the underlying optical scattering process, whereas photon-counting statistics and detector response must be modeled separately to describe measurements in the single-photon regime. In this study, a unified simulation model for rough-surface scattering and single-photon detection is developed based on the microfacet model. The model incorporates laser emission, photon propagation, surface scattering, an

Hazy transparent cellulose nanocrystal-based films with tunable structural colors.

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are powerful biosourced nanomaterials for the construction of chiral photonic films. While various techniques have been used to enrich the optical properties of such systems, surface roughness engineering has yet to be exploited to significantly modify their optical properties. In this work, by using vacuum filtration-assisted self-assembly, CNCs are densely packed into films with high optical transparency. Filtration membrane texture-imprinted chiral photonic CNC-based films with engineered surface roughness are demonstrated. Simultaneously optimized optical haze

Heterogeneous photonic integration of single-crystalline nanomembranes.

Despite the growing maturity of silicon (Si) and silicon nitride (SiN) for integrated photonics, a single material platform is unable to meet the diversifying requirements posed for photonic integrated circuits1,2. Essential optical functionalities can be attained by the heterogeneous integration of functional materials into established photonic platforms3,4. However, stringent lattice-matching constraints severely hinder the quality of heteroepitaxial material grown on dissimilar optical substrates5. Here we obviate this limitation by exploiting free-standing single-crystalline nanomembranes

Collection of fluorescence from an ion using trap-integrated photonics.

Spontaneously emitted photons are entangled with the electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom of the emitting atom, so interference and measurement of these photons can entangle separate matter-based quantum systems as a resource for quantum information processing. Since confinement in a single-mode facilitates the photon interference needed for generating entanglement, the dipole emission patterns relevant in spontaneous emission present a mode-matching challenge. Current demonstrations rely on bulk photon-collection and manipulation optics that suffer from large component size and system-to

MO detector (MOD): a dual-function optical modulator-detector for on-chip communication.

While augmenting network on chips (NoC) with photonic links enables high-bandwidth communication, the overhead for photonics is rather large, mainly driven by bulky footprints and the multi-functionality of transceivers. The latter requires, in addition to a photon source, signal modulation and detection. If the NoC were photonically augmented at every network point to enable all-to-all connectivity, the resulting photonic overhead would be excessive. Besides, the high bandwidth of a single optical bus may be sufficient to supply the data-sharing demand of a network. Spatial signal routing is

Strain-Responsive and Self-Healing Chiral Polymer Vitrimer Composites: Tunable Circular Dichroism and Mechanochromic Recovery in Self-Standing Films.

Controlling the absorption and emission of circularly polarized light (CPL) in free-standing polymer thin films is central to next-generation chiral photonic and optoelectronic technologies. Still, it remains hindered by limited optical activity, weak mechanical robustness, and poor scalability. Here, we present vitrimer-based chiral self-standing films (P*VFs), synthesized in situ with a fluorene-thiophene chiral polymer additive, that combine mechanical stability, reprocessability, self-repairing properties, and tunable chiroptical responses. The vitrimer matrix confines hierarchically order

Topology-optimized dielectric cavities for enhanced excitonic light emission from WSe2.

Photonic inverse design and, especially, topology optimization, enable dielectric cavities with deeply sub-diffraction mode volumes and high quality factors, thus offering a powerful platform for enhanced light-matter coupling. Here, we design and fabricate arrays of CMOS-compatible silicon cavities on sapphire with extreme subwavelength transverse mode sizes of only 30-40 nm ( V ~ λ 3 / 2500 ). These cavities are engineered for deterministic coupling to a monolayer (or few-layer) excitonic material, producing strong near-field localization directly beneath the 2D material. Symmetry-breaking enabled topological phase transitions in spin-orbit optics.

The topological phase transitions (TPT) of light refers to a topological evolution from one type of spin-orbit interaction to another, which has been recently found in beam scattering at optical interfaces and propagation in uniaxial crystals. In this work, the focusing of off-axis and partially masked circular-polarization Gaussian beams are investigated by using of a full-wave theory. Moreover, two different types of spin-orbit interactions (i.e., spin-dependent vortex generation and photonic spin-Hall effect) in the focusing system are unified from the perspective of TPT. It is demonstrated

Elimination of Chirality in Three-Dimensionally Confined Open-Access Microcavities.

The emergent optical activity (OA) caused by anisotropic light emitter in microcavities is an important physical mechanism discovered recently, which leads to Rashba-Dresselhaus photonic spin-orbit (SO) coupling. In this study, we report a sharp contrast of the roles of the emergent OA in free and confined cavity photons, by observing the optical chirality in a planar-planar microcavity and its elimination in a concave-planar microcavity, evidenced by polarization-resolved white-light spectroscopy, which agrees well with the theoretical predictions based on the degenerate perturbation theory.

Cavity-Enhanced Giant Magneto-Optical Linear Dichroism in van der Waals CrSBr.

Compact magneto-optical dichroism devices facilitate active and dynamic manipulation of photons at the chip scale, making them a key focus in the development of integrated photonic and optoelectronic systems. However, the performance of existing optical anisotropy materials is often constrained by their narrow operational bandwidth and temperature and insufficient magnetically induced tunability. Herein, we demonstrate robust and reconfigurable magneto-optical dichroism spanning the visible to near-infrared spectrum using a quasi-1D exciton-polariton cavity platform constructed from van der Wa

Quantum Fisher information and photon statistics from shift current shot noise.

Quantum Fisher information (QFI) sets the ultimate precision of optical phase measurements and can reveal multiphoton entanglement. Yet the photon-number fluctuations that encode this sensitivity are difficult to convert into an electrical signal. We theoretically predict that a photodetector utilizing the shot noise of the quantum-geometric shift current of exciton polaritons can measure photon-number statistics and, for pure states, infer the QFI. By solving the Lindblad equation, we obtain the time-dependent nonlinear photocurrent for an arbitrary initial photon state. It turns out that, re

Ultra-compact grating-coupled nanophotonic resistive switch.

Minimizing the footprint of nonvolatile photonic memories is essential for high-density programmable photonic integrated circuits. The engineered device simultaneously integrates optical coupling, hybrid mode confinement, and resistive switching within a single engineered grating structure, resulting in a total device length of only ~24 µm, including the input coupling, active switching, and output coupling regions. All-optical control of nonlinear emission from resonant metasurfaces.

Nonlinear optics underpins a broad range of photonic technologies, from classical and quantum light sources to emerging nonlinear photonic neural networks. Yet, conventional nonlinear-optical devices exhibit static functionality: Their transfer characteristics and emission profiles are dictated by the intrinsic nonlinear process and locked by fabrication, limiting adaptability. Here, we introduce an ultrathin metasurface platform that enables dynamic reconfiguration of nonlinear functionality in a contactless fashion. By leveraging all-optical control of the optical torque exerted on liquid cr

In-line fiber-integrated photon-pair generation from van der Waals crystals.

Miniaturized quantum light sources that operate directly in optical fibers are an attractive platform for optical quantum technologies. However, most miniaturized spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) sources still rely on objective-lens-based free-space pumping and collection, which limits compactness, robustness, and direct compatibility with fiber-based systems. Here we demonstrate a lens-free in-line SPDC photon-pair source by integrating a van der Waals NbOI[Formula: see text] flake directly onto the end facet of an optical fiber. In this configuration, the generated photon-pairs
