INTRODUCTION: Osteocutaneous microvascular free tissue transfer (OMFTT) is the current standard in reconstruction of large bony defects of the oral cavity. Although being able to swallow ranks as a top priority for patients undergoing OMFTT, factors associated with achieving an oral diet following surgery remain unclear. We sought to describe the rate of total oral diet achievement, and to identify possible pre-, intra-, and post-operative factors associated with achievement in patients undergoing OMFTT.
METHODS: Retrospective review between January 1, 2010 and March 31, 2018 at two tertiary

Foreign bodies in the maxillary sinus are infrequent findings with various organic and inorganic materials have been reported. Most are iatrogenic due to abnormal communications between the oral cavity and the sinus cavity, predominantly secondary to dental and oral procedures. Oroantral fistulas might be asymptomatic incidental findings or may present with sinusitis-related symptoms. Even though oroantral fistulas are frequently encountered iatrogenic complications, most studies focused on radiologic findings and surgical closure procedures. A few cases reported the histopathologic findings o

Esophagogastric anastomotic fistula is a common complication following esophageal cancer surgery, typically occurring within the first postoperative week. Conventional management requires prolonged fasting until complete fistula closure, which significantly impacts patient quality of life. We present a case of a male who developed an esophagogastric anastomotic fistula 2 months postoperatively, complicated by a concurrent gastrobronchial fistula. Endoscopic evaluation revealed persistent gastric wall defects at the fistula site. As the disease progressed, thickened visceral pleura formed dense

Here we report a rare case of a reopened gastrostomy fistula 21-years after spontaneous closure. A male newborn underwent gastrostomy by laparotomy because of esophageal atresia shortly after birth. The gastrostomy tube was removed at 7 months old because he could consume enough oral nutrition. At the age of 21, however, the fistula reopened to form a labial fistula. When he consulted to our hospital, we observed a large skin sore with redness at the site of the fistula, which was caused by gastric outflow. We chose to resect the fistula by open surgery as a reliable therapeutic method in cons

BACKGROUND: As the performance of late primary palatoplasty for skeletally mature patients remains controversial, there is little data available regarding speech outcomes for this patient population. The purpose of this study therefore is to identify and evaluate the impact of speech outcomes following late palate repair on skeletally mature patients.
METHODS: A retrospective study was performed on 19 consecutive skeletally mature patients who underwent late primary palate repair between 2010 and 2018. Speech assessment was performed preoperatively, between 3 and 6 months postoperatively, and

A 71-year-old man receiving prednisolone was diagnosed with pulmonary nocardiosis caused by Nocardia veterana and presented with a painless gingival fistula without an apparent odontogenic source. The fistula resolved with antimicrobial therapy alone, suggesting a possible association with nocardiosis and highlighting an unusual oral manifestation.

INTRODUCTION: Gastrocutaneous fistulas remain an uncommon complication of upper gastrointestinal surgery. Less common but equally problematic are gastrocutaneous fistulas secondary to non-healing gastrostomies. Both are associated with considerable morbidity and mortality. Surgical repair remains the gold standard of care. For those unfit for surgical intervention, results from conservative management can be disappointing. We describe a case series of seven patients with gastrocutaneous fistulas who were unfit for surgical intervention. These patients were managed successfully in a minimally i

Oronasal and oromaxillary sinus fistulae are well-documented complications following removal or loss of a maxillary cheek tooth. Diagnosis is currently based on a combination of oral examination, videoendoscopy, radiography, and computed tomography (CT). The objective of this retrospective, case series study was to describe the CT characteristics of confirmed oronasal and oromaxillary sinus fistulae in a group of horses. Inclusion criteria were a head CT acquired at the authors' hospital during the period of 2012-2017, a CT diagnosis of oronasal or oromaxillary sinus fistulae, and a confirmed

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the conservative management and outcomes of pharyngocutaneous fistula after total laryngectomy.
METHOD: Twenty-one patients with postoperative fistulas were identified and treated by conservative therapy.
RESULT: Different treatment were given basing on the three stages of pharyngocutaneous fistula: drainage and cleaning stage, pressure bandaging stage and healing stage. Fourteen patients (66.7%) with the conservative therapy resumed oral feeding after closure of fistula, the other 7 patients had to be cured by further operation.
CONCLUSION: Management basing on the st

A parotid fistula is a rare complication following parotid gland and duct injury. A two-year-old boy with a previous parotid fistula after parotid injury due to a dog bite was successfully treated with pressure-dressing therapy, which is generally non-invasive and tolerable by young children. During follow-up, ultrasonography revealed atrophy of the parotid gland. This finding is consistent with the healing mechanism previously assumed in adult patients with a parotid fistula. Consideration should be paid to the possibility of oral environmental changes associated with reduced saliva secretion

Odontogenic cutaneous fistula is a rare condition that is frequently misdiagnosed. This article presents a case of an odontogenic cutaneous fistula following mandibular wisdom tooth removal. An 18-year-old woman with no underlying medical conditions presented to the oral and maxillofacial surgery department with swelling of the left cheek and a facial skin fistula. A surgical fistulectomy was performed under general anesthesia, and follow-up revealed satisfactory mucosal and skin healing, with residual cutaneous retraction.

A Greyhound presented with eosinophilic granuloma lesions of the soft palate and oronasal fistula. Since other siblings had been known to also have oral eosinophilic granuloma, it was suspected that the dog reported here had a familial predisposition to develop the disease. Preoperative medical management consisting of anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive therapy was required before surgical repair of the oronasal fistula. Multiple surgical techniques, including a greater palatine island axial pattern flap, were used to repair the oronasal fistula.

BACKGROUND: Oroantral fistulas are pathologic connections between the oral cavity and the maxillary sinus. Arteriovenous fistulas are abnormal connections between an artery and a vein with no intervening capillary network.
METHODS: We present an extremely rare case of barotrauma-related oroantral fistula with an associated arteriovenous fistula between the internal maxillary artery and the ophthalmic venous system.
RESULTS: The patient developed an oroantral fistula from barometric pressure changes in the setting of sinusitis. After closure and revision of the oroantral fistula, he developed

BACKGROUND: The oronasal fistula in cleft patients is one of the complications that can be found after primary surgeries due to a failure of healing of the surgical repair that causes the communication between the oral and nasal cavities. A number of procedures can be implemented to correct the fistula and it is not clear if a particular technique is the best to be recommended.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to systematically analyze the scientific evidence regarding the treatment of oronasal fistulas located in the lingual-alveolar and labial-alveolar regions in patients with cleft lip and palat

Detection and localization of an enterovesicular fistula in a patient with chronic inflammatory bowel disease and recurrent urinary tract infection was accomplished by following a bolus of orally administered gold colloid as it traversed the gastrointestinal tract with serial scintiphotos and simultaneously monitoring the activity in the urine. When significant tracer was found in the urine, multiple scans of the abdomen were obtained to determine the location of the tracer. To confirm the site of the fistula, the tracer was mixed with barium and administered per rectum. Radiographs were obtai

BACKGROUND: Gastro-thoracic fistula is a serious complication after radical surgery for esophageal cancer, and a conservative approach or endoscopic intervention is commonly applied to treat most cases.
CASE SUMMARY: Here we describe the case of a patient with a gastro-thoracic fistula which could not be closed during gastroscopy after receiving postoperative radiotherapy, together with severe multiple drug-resistant bacterial infection and chest wall fistula. The abscess was drained and local irrigation applied with ozonated water, together with oral ozonated water, which achieved a good eff

H-type tracheoesophageal fistula (H-TEF) without esophageal atresia makes up 4% to 5% of esophageal congenital abnormalities. The authors present the thoracoscopic treatment of a 2.47-kg newborn boy with a fistula between the second and third thoracic vertebrae diagnosed by esophagography. Four trocars were used for fistula closure, and tracheal and esophageal suturing were accomplished without intraoperative incident. Five days after surgery, results of a barium swallow excluded anastomotic leaks. The chest tube was removed, and oral feeding was initiated.
